I have officially had my 2019 Ram Power Wagon for one calendar year!! We're going to talk about everything... fuel economy, registration costs, tires, winches, interior, engine, exhaust, etc etc...
This is a no holds barred review from a through and through Ford Fanboy.
Bottom line is I love the truck - zero regrets. If you are thinking about a power wagon... DO IT.

Justin, oil changes. Break the filter loose and then cover it with a 1gal zip lock bag, then unscrew it off the motor. It will not catch 100% of the oil, but it will catch quite a bit, then just zip the bag shut and put it in the trash. Easy.

Justin, I am thinking of buying a PW but what you said about the brakes was bothersome so I did a little research and found that this is a common problem with these. You need a "scan tool" connected to the computer to open the ABS valves - then bleed the brakes. After that the sponginess is gone and good solid brakes again. I hope you see this. Art from Ohio

I had a 2020 Gladiator Rubicon and I bought a 2022 Power Wagon and I’m extremely happy I did. It’s a Gladiator on steroids, more comfortable,more space, 12,000 lb. Winch , there’s only one draw back, gas mileage but you don’t buy a three quarter ton truck for the fuel mileage. I put a cat back on my truck because I didn’t like the look of where they put the resonator . I’ve got the level 2 Power Wagon. I still have a 2005 Wrangler Rubicon LJ .

Brakes: Check the pads themselves. FCA had a bad habit of using tiny pads, the pad holder is normal sized on my Chrysler 200C AWD but the pads were half the size. I replaced them (Still nearly 80% of the pad left) at under 40,000 miles and the new Ceramic pads had 2x the contact area. The difference in braking is day and night.

14 ram 1500, replaced pads and rotors at 45k miles. They were warped. Loaded powerstop on the truck and ended up getting 80k miles out of the first set of rotors. 150k miles and only on the second set of replacement pads. Not sure if powerstop makes the rotors for this truck bit if they do,m well worth it.

I also track my mileage on Fuelly. I can compare my 2018 Tundra, a half-ton truck, to your PowerWagon. My Tundra has a lifetime average (2 years, 16 000miles) of 11.2 MPG. My best tank was also 15.6 MPG. My worst tank (8.63 MPG) was this spring when I was hauling 10 000lb load after load of clean fill in a dump trailer while landscaping. I think my average should be better, but for the first year of the truck's life, it did mostly short trips of 2-3kms, not really having a chance to warm up at all (I also live in Manitoba, where it gets really, really cold, which doesn't help). Now I have a beater car for the short daily trips, and the truck only gets used on longer trips where it will have a chance to warm up and stop dumping fuel into a cold engine. My average should be going up over the next year.
@JustinKingOffroad
@JustinKingOffroad 3 жыл бұрын
for how heavy this truck is it really does good. i don't let it warm up much cause i park in a garage that i heat to 50. but if i'm out camping or something in the winter i'll give it 5-10 minutes. the truck appears to drink 8/10ths of a gallon per hour at idle per the obd port scan tools.

@@JustinKingOffroad I just got to the part where you overloaded your truck with flatbed trailer. Haha, I did similar this spring when landscaping. I picked up a Bobcat S185 in my dump trailer. Total weight was about 11000lbs, truck's only rated for 9800lbs. It was a 20 min trip through the city though, so I wasn't too worried. It's definitely not something I'd do often, though, or for a long trip. ibb.co/XLCnHPh

Each oil change adds x13 corrosion protection power to the undercarriage. :) And on the hawes fairlead, it should be polished smoother than what Dodge, err, Ram, has done with that coating. Rollers runs the risk of pinching the synthetic line at the roller end bushings and cutting it.

Awesome details! Great video! Stellantis owns Jeep and Ram. Price differences are mostly due to demand. Many Jeeps are bought as a style statement and never taken on a dirt road. That's fine with me as an investor. I like the Gladiator but think it's underpowered. The PW is the best HD off-road. The biggest penalty is weight and in some cases size in close quarters. Great choice! Just my opinion.

Hehe...I live in North Carolina. Our vehicle tax is not that bad, but when I was young and broke it was too high for my taste. So I got a Post Office Box down in South Carolina. I gave them a random street address to a real house (whose house, I have no idea) and the PO box as a mailing address. Annually, I would take a trip down to SC to get my registration renewals out of my PO box. Wherever government tries to take too much...it ends up getting NOTHING!

Its not that the brakes are too small, its that the pads are garbage. Throw on a set of EBC yellow pads front and rear and your opinion will be changed. They're not cheap pads but they're worth every penny. I swapped the OE pads out for them on my PW at 20k miles and today at just under 60k miles, they still have a bit of life on them. 35" Toyo MTS on mine and I tow a 10k lb toy hauler probably 2500mi per year. They are great pads for these trucks!

While oil filter location is not great it does have a drip guide that keeps the mess to a minimum. I’m sure you noticed a small funnel located right under the filter, you just crack the filter and let it drip for a while slowly that way it only gets onto one crossbar and doesn’t splash all over the place.

Love the Power Wagon. I am a chevy guy but when it came to buying a new truck a couple years ago I went with Ram. I did not get the Power Wagon, went with the 1500 Sport with the 5.7 which for towing is rated at about the same as the Power Wagon. Would likely get a bit better millage with the Power Wagon when towing but everything has trade offs. And Brad bought a Power Wagon??? Guess I need to keep up better on Instagram.

@@JustinKingOffroad they make by-pass filtration kits for pretty much anything with a filter. It takes a bit of cross referencing. You cross-reference your filter to the filter adapter. Then get the dual bypass filtration kit. You will have the full flow (regular type) filter and the ultra fine filter (by-pass) filters down to like 2 microns. It’s all in the same location. They do make quick kits that are diesel specific.

So my buddy has a power wagon, been with him a few times Or wheeling and that truck does not care LOL we see an obstacle it’ll go over it I don’t care how steep it is we follow jeeps all the time and they follow us.....Yeah that truck is way heavier than a Ford but it feels more stable when towing and has much better horsepower and torque , I don’t know what Dodge puts on their trucks for brakes but I had the same situation on a 1500 model and my buddy on a 2500 just not very good breaks from the factory for some reason I swap them out for a better grade and I’m telling you it was night and day difference it will stand on its nose now get new brake pads as soon as possible, and put a remote oil filter on there mounted under the hood or anywhere else you wanna put it well worth the money put on much bigger filters from Amsoil considerably better filtration , With oil essentially like a new the entire time it’s in the vehicle. PS my 2004 Durango at 5500 pounds and I will drive average is 16 in town and will get 20 to 21 on the highway easily and it will run on the cheapest gas I can buy I only gained 1 mpg on 89 octane which is what I tow with for much better torque and horsepower which is noticeable when used.

The brakes on the 3500 ram are boosted. The 2500, across all trims, has a mushy pedal. I have to pump brakes in my power wagon, neither of my 3500 rams had squishy pedals. Even my 2500 cummins had squishy brakes. Also, when I was in Cheyenne Wyoming I had the same gasoline results your seeing. However, once I moved back to North Carolina, where we have 93 octane, if I don’t run premium gasoline, I get ticking with 89 and knocks with 87. At 30k on the clock, I do get about 1-2 mpg better with premium but I use it mostly because my engine doesn’t sound like trash.
