10 Bedroom Interior Design Mistakes + What To Do Instead

The holidays are in full swing with it's joys and stresses and as we move toward the new year, it's a natural time to reflect on the things that can bring us health and well-being. If there’s a room that affects our health and well-being more than any other, it has to be the bedroom. We spend a third of our lives there rejuvenating our bodies so that we can make the most of our waking hours. The goal in designing this space is to create a relaxing atmosphere that allows us to rest, renew and recharge but there are some design mistakes that can interfere with that goal. In this video we take a look at 10 to avoid and what to do instead to create a restful retreat.

I’m redoing my bed and I’m trying to make it look finished but not full of decor that is just a waste.. balance is key. Not clutter!

Thoughtfully presented information. I would've added no electronic devices (mobile, laptop, TV etc) and work station / desk in a bedroom, especially in a child's bedroom. In a studio apartment, the study/office area would need to be thoughtfully zoned.

Another helpful and informative video! I like to use the rule of 3 for bedroom lighting: 2 on either side of the bed (if possible) and 1 across the room from the bed. That provides options for a soft ambient atmosphere. I never use the overhead lights in the bedroom.

I was actually expecting "electronics in the room" to be on that list of mistakes 🤔 Not so much the matching sheets set on the bed. I like my pillow covers to match my duvet cover 🤷🏼‍♀️I have matching sheets and I find it to be very pretty really 🤗

About plants in bedroom? How do you keep them alive? Without changing them all the time?

It depends on the plant. I really like snake plants and golden pothos because they don't need a lot of light. Other than that, some water every couple of weeks will keep them alive.

So happy you liked it! Snake plants are great for cleaning the air and they can thrive in low light and are drought resistant. Golden Pothos is another great one for low light. I have extensive personal experience with both of these and have found them to be the best.

Thank you for this video! I am currently working on my bedroom. I actually have the crate and barrel bed you showed with the beautiful round artwork above it. But i dont know what furniture would match it. Its a difficult cerused wood. Wood you keep the matching nightstands shown in the picture?

My pleasure! That's a beautiful bed and the nightstands are pretty great too if you want a matching look. If not you could look for something (not cerused) in one of the deep tones of the wood so that it's not an exact match but still coordinates.

I have plush carpet in my bedroom, can I still layer another rug on top or will this look weird?

Yes, you can! Try a different texture and/or a decor coordinating pattern to help anchor and delineate the space.

It looks so easy to design with reference but it gets harder if you are unable to decide which reference will you choose. 🤭🤭

Plants need light to photosynthesis, there usually isn't enough light in the bedroom at night to facilitate this.

Mine as well, especially avoiding storage under the bed when possible. Under the bed has to be the dustiest place on earth, and storing items there makes it cumbersome to clean. A dusty room is not healthy to sleep in.

I agree. I avoid storage under the bed as well. I have fewer things in order to not have to use under the bed for storage.
