In this more 'podcast-y' episode, we go through some of the games on the Switch that we feel put some of the AAA counter parts to shame. These are games we very much enjoy playing and could easily have been developed by a major company in terms of the quality they exude. What games are on the list? Well, let's find out...

I just want to echo any praise for Monster Sanctuary, I think it's my favorite game ever at this point if I'm honest. Let me start by saying there is a learning curve and difficulty spikes in the game that are designed to make sure you understand the game's team building and combat fundamentals. These can be frustrating, however, there is a hugely helpful community on discord and on reddit that can help you build teams and learn the game. Every monster can be viable on the right team and there are so many play styles to choose from. If you are on the fence, wait for a frequent sale on this, but if you have any interest in turn based combat or monster taming I can't recommend it enough! I have 120+ hours on it so far and will be returning when the DLC (free) comes out in June!

Speaking of the Ori games, there is an excellent developer deep-dive on Digital Foundry's channel of how they accomplished the 60 fps ports on Switch. I'm TL;DR'ing it, but they did tons of low-level optimizations to the various pipelines Unity uses. It's pretty nuts. Fascinating video for anyone into the technical side of games!

For sure. My spouse and I have this discussion often. He's a bit of a self-admitted graphics snob and loves his ps5. While he has enjoyed a few Switch games, he generally goes for big triple A titles. The majority of my most played titles, on the other hand, are indies with less "amazing graphics" but more "innovative gameplay." The two of us go back and forth about which is better, but overall we tend to agree that different things are important to different people. I love what's new and interesting, he loves a game that beautifully presents what's already been done. Occasionally a game like MH Rise comes out that allows us to meet halfway, but for the most part we stick to our own systems and play what we love. I'm glad different options exist for both types of player.

Really, the first "METROIDVANIA" I ever played (though it was just called an action, adventure game way back then) was CASTLEVANIA 2 - SIMON'S QUEST . I remember getting it for Christmas I believe when it came out and I just fell in love with it. I know that through years it really received a lot of negativity but if you can look past a few minor issues like some of the texts or a few lackluster boss fights it really is a fun game. I mean especially back in the late 80's, because for me I had never played an open world game. (Not sure there were many, maybe something like THE LEGEND OF ZELDA I guess) Being a little kid & playing it was awesome. It was this whole world that I could explore & it really just captured my imagination. I still love it & play it regularly today. Now I do have to say that it took me many years to finish it because there are certain points in the game that if you don't know exactly what to equip & what buttons to push you will be stuck. Also without having the internet at that time I had to go to book stores or buy those VHS tapes that had game tips & walk through's on them! LOL! Which was really a pain in the ass!... Yeah, had to really put some effort into it back in the day . But my point is that I do consider SIMON'S QUEST to be one of the first "METROIDVANIA'S" 🤘🤘🤘

@@cedric1138 It's a roguelite, so that's already a barrier for most people. I didn't really get the game at first either, even as a fan of roguelites, but there is just such a satisfaction in getting cool combos and figuring out how stuff interacts. I think I can also say that despite my huge amount of playtime, I don't think I've ever had a run that has been the same as another. It feels genuinely different every single time, and I don't feel that any other roguelite has captured that quite as well, with an already highly addictive and simple way to play. Honestly, if you have the chance, try and stick it out for a while. I only kept playing for the first 10 hours because I'd heard it was good and I didn't really click. Then something just went off inside me where I was utterly addicted and loving it. They also released a DLC not that long ago that added a massive amount of content as well as huge quality of life overhaul. I cannot recommend it enough. In my 20+ years of gaming, I have never gone back to a game and consistently enjoyed it as much as I have with TBOI.

Great list, with several of my most loved Switch games included. But man... every time I see Stardew mentioned in a video I'm tempted to try (once again) to get into it. I love that genre, and "cozy" games in general, but I've probably tried at least ten times to get into Stardew and the whole time/energy system just stresses me out. I *really* wish the dev would add an option to remove those systems for those who want it (maybe adding in a temporary buff for sleeping as an incentive for players to keep some semblance of a day/night schedule). It's a fairly common complaint I see, so I feel adding that option would increase the game's player base to be even larger than it already is. Littlewood did things a bit better, but was too short. I want something I can sink hundreds of hours into... and I really want it to be Stardew. Oh well... Sorry for the mini side novel, ha. Stardew is just that one game for me that brings up "I wish I could" feelings. Regardless, a truly great list. Would love to see more in a future video! Maybe one that focuses on even more obscure games that put triple A devs to shame? Good stuff!

‘Ori’ is a great game, ‘A Short Hike” is excellent (but short as it says). Hollow Knight would have been excellent too, but it is too hard.

Wrestling Empire. This game has evolved so much that it is blowing away every AAA wrestling game released on the Switch. Just like Stardew Valley, it is made by one person.

I’m literally finishing up the last couple heroic fights in Deaths Gambit now before I go finish the game…I think it’s a great game and love it…I got it for 5 bucks on sale for the switch and I believe it’s still on sale and it’s definitely worth the full price let alone 5 bucks…

Great video as always, guys! One game that I think deserves a mention is SAYONARA WILD HEARTS which blew me away in just how unique the game style is. They call it a 'music based action game' but to me it's just a surreal, enchanting and addictive experience with an amazing soundtrack and unique art style. Check it out if you haven't already.

Y’know I never hear people talk about games that outstay their welcome. I remember hating Luigi’s Mansion 2 because of how long it felt compared to the first Luigi’s Mansion (which I loved for it’s shorter length and replayability). However, I loved Hollow Knight (which I’ve spent so many hours in) but personally was really happy with Metroid Dread’s length. Sometimes I think people forget not every game needs to be a million hour marathon and if that’s what the market truly wants then why does Ubisoft get so much hate for it cookie-cutter open world game design? Anyway, I love the chemistry between these two guys, it’s like two best mates who share a common interest. Takes me back to my high school years, where it was exciting to go to school to chat about video games with my best friend!

Indie companies are the lifeblood of the gaming industry’s potential for creativity. Ofc there’s exceptions, even on the AAA side, but that’s the trend I’ve noticed the past decades.

Gonna have to chime in and say Fight N Rage is a worthy contender for replacing SOR4 but The Takeover? It's decent don't get me wrong but, it certainly doesn't hold a candle to SOR4 in the presentation department, not even remotely close. One game that does need some love, I know the companies that made it have been around for a while but as far as my knowledge they never reached that level of global notoriety. Marvelous and XSEED came out with a modern style Armored Core type Mech Combat game called Daemon X Machina. I loved that game, played insanely well for how much is happening on the switch. The bosses were sweet, tons of weapon types and mech styles, there's even ICE CREAM!!! Play it!
