Yeah, Roy was never the same after the Tarver loss. I suspect the training and PED regimen for the Ruiz bout and subsequent weight loss sapped him as well. He never could take a solid shot or fight defensively off the ropes but never needed to until his superhuman quickness and head feints failed him. I met him once in Pensacola away from the crowds -- he's a very down to earth guy when the cameras aren't watching. Soft handshake too, like a basketball player's, not like a fighter's. I hope he'll stay out of the ring for the sake of his health.

big George is the exception to the rule, and probably the reason all these other guys are on your list, trying to emulate him.

I agree but he even when becoming old he didn’t lose much, most dudes get worst when they become old because they lose speed, can’t keep up with the pace and stamina, George never really had speed and could determine the pace because of his power, and he took it slow so he didn’t gas out

I think it was potential danger AND literal danger. Foreman and B-Hop have adjusted their technique to match their age and fought well into old age safely (safe as you can boxing in your late 40's) Guys like Roy Jones Jr never adapted to their ageing body and are getting wreck and are risking serious brain damage for what short lives they have left.

The good thing is that it's up to the Los Vegas Gaming commission to determine his fitness to fight. Taking a severe concussion at his age might result in him getting his license revoked. The problem is CTE and pugilistic dementia. They are taking a far more proactive stance from preventing an entire next generation of being punch drunk.

Age means different things to different people. I watched Manny v Thurman and looked like their ages were in reverse. Maybe not so much age but when the ability is in decline and yes many times age is a factor but not always. I think some fighters burn out no matter what age case in point Mike Tyson. When you are winning world titles aged 45 it must be difficult to retire. Foreman beat Briggs. This is the problem with points you just can't trust judges because if you could GGG would still be a Champion.

Speaking of age, my father is a 77 year old former professional heavyweight. He's 6"2 and 240. I can absolutely assure you that I would never - even on a dare - want to get punched by him. His hands look like lunch boxes and he no longer even has knuckles they've been pounded into hands. Instead, it's a giant layer of callous. I used the sparing pads with my father and he missed throwing a straight right and bopped me right in the forehead. I went down for the 10 count lol. My father would say "Yeah I can only go one round or two now..so you gotta make it count". That's how Foreman and Hopkins remained around for so long. They adapted, trained to their strengths, trained even harder to compensate for the age gap and proved to the world the impossible. The rule of thumb in Boxing is that a fighter really never loses his punch. He'll age, and unless he has a neurological ailment, take a punch from a former pro even at 60 years old - you'll regret it.

Foreman had one of the hardest punches and one of the strongest chins in history. He was too slow to have good defense in his comeback and still nobody could knock him out

This vid is a cautionary tale against brain trauma. Especially Jones Jr. Not even joking.

That guy in the beginning at 1:26, I was just shaking my head. You can hear it in his voice, the damage.

Boxing is dangerous at any age. The only difference is whether or not you can still adequately defend yourself.

As you get older, those instincts get more and more dull. And your tolerance for pain definitely takes a dip.

Age can matter, but wear and tear taken on the brain and body matters more. A guy who has not taken a lot of punishment over the years can still box and compete in his 50's and maybe even 60's. A great fighter like Pipino Cuevas, for example who beat the hell out of people and also took a number of serious poundings by his young twenties, could be old in the boxing ring at age 25. It is all relative, and no two bodies are the same.
