Light-Sport Aircraft or LSA do become more and more popular among new pilots because they are fairly simple to fly. If you're looking to buy a Light-Sport Aircraft and become a private pilot we put together the 10 cheapest light-sport aircraft you can buy. The Aircraft in today's video meet the LSA criteria of the FAA. Please keep in mind, that there are no universal LSA criteria so depending on your country the LSA criteria will most likely be different. Compared to the ultralight or microlight aircraft category the LSAs tend to be heavier and more sophisticated but the LSA restriction on weight and performance separates the category from established General Aviation aircraft.

I was going to post that myself. Overhauled or rebuilt engines can cost as much as the kit and most planes will need about $7 to $10k in avionics to meet today's requirements. A kit plane is registered as 'experimental' (you're experimenting with your assembly skills). Do your homework.

@@henryostman5740 "Experimental" engines are a lot cheaper than certified, That said if you're buying New, a Lycoming non-certed 0-320 (Their "Thunderbolt" line is still probably in the 30K area and up depending on your options.) There are a slew of Other engines though, most of which are a LOT Cheaper than a traditional "Aircraft" engine, especially if you're looking at some of the smaller Kits where the suggested plant is in the 100-130 HP range. Not including the Core, but you can do a Corvair Engine for under $10K by Building it yourself, Then there are other Auto-Conversions, like Jabiru, or Viking, ranging in the $15-20K arena. As for Avionics, you can do a REALLY Solid VFR-Only glass setup, with ADS-b in/out for around another 10-12K. If you go Steam Gauges, you can probably Halve that with Keeping ADS-b In/out. It's generally a good idea to budget out double the base price of the Kit for Engine and avionics/Instruments. If the Full kit Price is say $30K, Expect a Minimum of $60K out the door, before you do your paperwork for the Inspection for your Temp Airworthiness Certificate.

Clearly who ever wrote this has no clue of the Light Sport Aircraft regulations and the speeds and weight limitations those regulations impose on the aircraft for use in the LSA class. A number of the planes that were listed are outside the LSA class of aircraft.

@@SalveMonesvol it has I Believe Rotec Radial. Radial Engines always have an Odd Number (Or Multiple thereof) of Cylinders. the Rotecs come in 7 and 9 Cylinder Models. the WWII era P&W and Wrights usually had 9 Cylinders as the base, and then just more crankcases with 9 Cylinders bolted on as they went up in Power.

It is sort of a moot point since I am so late to the stream and others have mentioned the issues that combine to skew your rankings. It would be more informative to rank the by the price of a completed/flying aircraft. I realize there are a lot of variables in an experimental based on builder preferences. So perhaps more of a ranking based on least expensive or most expensive prices to get them in the air. Some of these end up being far from affordable, but then a crewcab 4x4 pickup starts in the mid-50s these days. Perhaps another approach would be to rank the various powerplants by cost.

The pricing is way way off on many of the kits. A new Rotax 912 costs $17,000 and a decent instrument panel will cost at least $5,000. That is $22,000 for just the engine and instruments.

True, but placing the pilot in front means that he will absorb the brunt of the impact in the unfortunate case of an accident. There’s always a trade off.

Well done video but misleading information (Sonex jet aside). These are the prices for these kit planes without a power plant. If it’s a two stroke, add at least $8,000. If it’s a four stroke, add at least $19,000. Would have been a phenomenal video if the complete truth was unveiled. However I am more than willing to admit I am wrong if you can prove these prices include an engine.

Don’t want to scare off any prospective buyers now, do you? Telling them the actual completed cost will turn away all those that clicked on the video hoping to buy a $14,000 airplane and go flying tomorrow. Not going to happen in any way, shape or form. Those unltrlights, by the way, are just that. Don’t think you’re going to be doing much traveling in those things except early morning when the air is CALM.

So the price mentioned is for a unbuilt kit, not an airplane. Further complicating things, you never make it clear if the price mentioned factors in such inconsequential items as the engine? But it was fun watching those airplanes fly.

Motorcycle engines aren't held up to the same reliability standards. You can't settle for 99.9% in aircraft. Motorcycles are known to have wide tolerances and temperamental running.

They are not "light" when compared to aircraft standards, they will require a PSRU because they turn way too fast for a propeller, need a cooling system and don't need a transmission.

Several of these are ultralights, not light sports.. You don’t even have to be a pilot to fly them. These kit planes do not have engines or instruments. My $11k kit plane (a brand that you showed in the video) will actually be costing closer to $40k by the time it’s finished. Still inexpensive for a plane, but not what is quoted here.

There are no ultralights on the list. Wt limit of ultralight is 254 lbs and can have only one seat, among other restrictions. Any "ultralight" looking craft that does not comply with Part 103 regulations is considered a light sport and you must have at least a Sport Pilot ticket to fly legally. I fly a Kolb Firestar two seat as a Sport Pilot.

Should change name to "10 least useful videos". A few of the planes shown are not "light sport eligible". You didn't even know the name of one of the planes. Costs mentioned are for a bare kit with no engine or instruments. At least know that you'll get great mileage without an engine!

C'mon, if you are gonna do these videos THEN DO YOUR HOMEWORK... First, an ULTRA-LIGHT is not a LIGHT SPORT aircraft. SLSA and ELSA are a category of their own. Ultra lights can include powered kites and gyrocopters. All your aircraft are EXPERIMENTAL kit aircraft, one even a small jet. Light sport aircraft include SLSA (factory built) and ELSA (kit built). Kits ARE NOT CHEAPER...they require thousands of hours of labor by YOU...labor that is NOT FREE. Try doing a video that is a little more honest than your click-baiting and incorrect title.

What a dumb video. Your taking about a sonex b but then show video of three different sonex aircraft. Also you can't build a Highlander for 25k I know you said we're not including upgrades but last I checked an engine was required. That plane will run minimum $60k to build.
