Minimalism really does look different for everyone. I used to have every kitchen gadget known to mankind. I donated so much of that stuff, and kept the basics. I’m so much happier!

I used to have a big bucket in my apartment for mopping the floors and in case there was something wrong with the tap water and I would need to get water from a water van or emergency tap. Then I got a mop that didnt neeed a water bucket so I got rid of the bucket... so today my neighbourhood had to shut the water off for the whole day because of a leak somewhere. No big bucket, no big pots (i decluttered those a long time ago) no extra water bottles.. was this the day I gave up minimalism? Nope, I went to the emergency tap with my big blender jug that holds more than 2 litres / 64 oz and I filled that up and put the lid on. And that was enough for me to carry. And it was so close by so i walked there another time when I needed more water. Long story short, today was the day I realised that I was right when I decluttered the big water bucket. In case the neighbourhood had to shut off the water, I can manage with what I have, and I didn't accidentally spill water on myself because my blender jug had a lid, the bucket did not. Just had to share that realisation as it might help someone else! We can get by with way less stuff than the we think we need. Thanks for the great video!

Made the mistake in 2019 of buying a fake xmas tree that is 7' tall and has a circumference of 54 inches. Because my husband and had not had a tree for years, we were thrilled to be able to have one in our second home (which in a few months will be our retirement home). We set it up in the vacant dining room, decorated and it was spectacular. Fast forward to 2021 and us now readying to move into the home. It never occurred to us that we would now not have a place to set up the tree as our dining room set will now reside in the dining room space we had used. We are planning to donate the "monster tree" to a assisted living facility along with the red, gold, silver and green balls we bought. Now I am back to hanging our treasured ornaments on a wreath just like we have done for years. (Heavy sigh) Lesson learned.

I got over the guilt thought by realizing the gift was given to me. That item is mine now. Sure it was a gift and I may have even wanted or asked for it but if it no longer is bringing me value or I don't want it anymore I shouldn't need to ask the gift giver if they are ok that I declutter it because it's not their item even though they bought it. It's my item so I can do what I want with it. That helped me a lot especially when they later would ask about an item and how I liked it/used it. Most of the gifts I declutter were unwanted in the first place but another note.... If someone gifts you something and you still love it and use it all the time, let them know that. Like Rebecca said the reason they gave you it was to bring you joy.

I wish I had taken some photos of the 'before' - I have been minamalising my familys life for about 1.5 years. Life is so much more simple now 😃 but it would be nice to see the actual more visual progress we have made

I just subscribed to your channel because I appreciate your calm approach and acknowledging that minimalism looks different for everyone. I find that it's so easy for me to declutter some stuff but I struggle with other areas... so I've given up on the idea that I need to be a minimalist in all areas of my life in order for it to "count" or whatever. Also any progress at all is so much better than no progress, I think.

Great video. The point about imagining the scenario that you'd need an item (as in your pie example) really was a lightbulb moment for me. It has now made me look at my 'just in case' items in a different way. Thank you! Keep up the great videos!

Excellent video! I haven't made this mistake but I know it's a common one...that is decluttering too much too quickly. People I know get rid of things just because they are excited or because they really love the feeling of satisfaction and relief from decluttering but then it becomes more about just pursuing the feeling rather than about really evaluating the value of their items. And they end up just wanting to get rid of everything in the 'rush' of decluttering and then they really do have deep regrets.

The biggest mistake l see on youtube is to declutter just make room for new clutter. It creates a declutter/shopping/declutter cycle that is really wasteful.

I completely agree. I think there is just a different mindset for those who declutter to make space for more things vs. those who declutter to make space.

I feel like I need to write these I’m sharpie on my dining room wall!! I wish I had know these tips when I moved continents 10 years ago. I got a container shipped 6six and a half years ago which I thankfully hadn’t paid to store. Tons of boxes full of furniture, house and craft supplies. Many of which I had already replaced I was pregnant when they came and many are still in boxes under a bed in a room that I still can’t get in which is now full of baby clothes and equipment for a second baby I never was fortunate enough to have and struggle to go in the room for that reason. We don’t have guests over because the second spare room is similar. It’s an overwhelming vicious cycle.

We inherited three or four tubs of photo albums from my husband's mother--her marriage, her mother's family, her sisters, vacations, school albums. Obviously, there is a connection to my husband, but I would like to declutter these. Too many photos! It seems like a huge chore, and I want to take it down to about two dozen photos. Would that be wrong? My husband does not look at these things, but would also not declutter them. Suggestions?

Thanks for these tips Rebecca. Your videos are always useful. I have learnt much from various KZfaqrs regarding minimalism, healthier eating, releasing past regrets and so much more. For all I have gained from this is more than words can describe. The results though has been more than rewarding and worthwhile.

number three, absolutely 😂 organizing is more fun! Love your 3 levels for sentimental items! I did something similiar when going through sentimental items a few weeks ago. And I indeed cried when dealing with some. It was kind of strenuous; hadn't anticipated that... I also have one designated space for them to keep track and not to overly accumulate sentimentals.

I think my biggest struggle is actually removing my decluttered items from my house. They tend to sit in a drawer for months while I have them listed on Poshmark or in a box for months while I'm waiting to get a chance to bring them to a donation center

Yes, Carolyn H.! So true! I am not remotely sentimental, but the 'what if' can often catch me up! I was just thinking, watching this - my version of the pie pan are the three muffin tins I still have, even though I only use my toaster oven and they don't even fit in there! I think it's time I let them go! lol

ughhhhh number 8 gets me every time. I have a hard time giving up family given things or things that have been "passed" down
@RebeccaSisson
@RebeccaSisson 3 жыл бұрын
I totally get that. The best thing I've found is to discourage the "passing down" in the first place. I used living in the van as an excuse for awhile but really not having space is a legitimate excuse to give family.

This is a hard one too. My In laws are huge collectors of valuable things and family heirlooms. Like not usual clutter that is easy to get rid of, like you could sell it for a lot of $ or it's highly sentimental. It will be hard one day when we inherit all of that. It may be super valuable, feelings and monetary, to one person and completely not to another. But so many times I hear of "my minimalist kids/grandkids don't care about all of this amazing stuff and it ends up sold or lost in an antique store so what am I supposed to do with it." You can't take it with you when you're gone and if it can add more value to your kids as money is that really a horrible thing?

Great video, as usual, Rebecca! ♥ I don't understand why you don't have more subscribers. C'mon, people! Subscribe! It's free! ;D The mistake I have the most difficulty with is getting rid of what I have decluttered immediately. I really love to get it out of my home right away, but 1) I don't have a car, and 2) we are in lockdown - again! - here in Ontario, Canada, so thrift stores are closed. sigh. I do have friends with cars who can help me with the car issue, but not much good when there's no place to donate the stuff. For bigger items, I can use FB marketplace, but not all the little stuff. Oh well...can't last forever, right?!
