THe chameleon circuit's function (in the Doctor's specific TARDIS) has, in my opinion, best been summed up by the Doctor: "It scans the nearby environment, determines the best thing it could turn into to blend in, and then turns into a blue police call box." Side joke: I wonder if the TARDIS does this because it got tired of the Doctor forgetting where he parked.

The TARDIS keeps her form for the convenience of the companions - she looks like the telephone box, as long as she is with the doctor ... but everytime River steals her for a little ride, she might change her appearence to keep themselves hidden from prying eyes of whitnesses looking for the doctor (Unit, any companion, foes and friends and even the Doctor himself)
@navijam6155

@@LisaBeta-42I like this view, The Doctor loves his blue box and the TARDIS it telepathically connected to him, so convenience for companions/joy for the Doctor is definitely good reason for her to stay as she is. The TARDIS has been established to be sentient in some way even if she is held within machinery to be contained so it wouldn't be too far out to say that the TARDIS keeps the police box exterior simply to please the Doctor

One point that always was weird to me, that could kind of make sense now, is when River asks 10, "Crash of the Byzantium, have we done that yet?". I find it such a strange question to ask. When it aired, it could just be passed off as off screen throwaway line, but obviously, later we come to find out that's the story we see in the first Angels episode with Matt Smith. With this additional context, why would she ask that question? It's not like she wasn't there, she saw the 11th Doctor, I can't imagine she'd forget the face she saw. Especially if she can tell he's younger than the 11th Doctor, the answer should be obvious, how could he be familiar with this event had he not even reached that regeneration yet? If River had met fourteen, the ambiguity she may have around timelines could make some sense. She'd have then met a version of the Doctor that shared the same face, completely familiar with those events she'd experienced alongside 11.
@Lordgrayson

Her storyline has become full of plot holes because of changes to the story as the show moved on. Like how she says that the doctor gave her his sonic, specifically his sonic that had been upgraded in the future. But we know that 10's sonic screwdriver was destroyed in The Eleventh Hour and replaced with his emerald sonic, The sonic that 12 gives River is a different sonic but she says otherwise. We also know that River did not know about the doctor having more faces than the 11th doctor until The Husbands of River Song. But in The Forest Of The Dead River implies she had never seen the doctor as 10, but in The Husbands of River Song she has a picture of each incarnation of the doctor in order of regeneration. Basically, This does not mean that she met 14(who will regenerate into the true next doctor at the end of his specials), it instead just means that Stephen Moffat is bad at keeping his continuity straight

People keep saying 'It must be 14, it must be 14'. Or, really obvious answer being, it 'must' be what she suggests it is - 10. She meets a 'younger' 10 in the Library, and meets an 'older' Ten between Donna and Time Lord Victorious. Not really that difficult. And more elegant than trying to insert the timeline of a 14th Doctor who we don't know anything about as of yet.

Considering that The Husbands of River Song shows that River at least knows OF all of the Doctor's incarnations from 1-11, and the Big Finish adventures established that she has indeed encountered earlier incarnations than 10, she would certainly have been aware that she had met earlier forms of the Doctor than him. Thus it would absolutely make sense that she was referring to the young appearance of 10 as opposed to an older version of that face as seen on 14 rather than an earlier incarnation. River has been my favorite character ever since she was introduced, so I'm all for seeing her reappear for another adventure or two with 14!

@AnimeOtakuDrew

@@HuntingViolets I always wondered that myself. The best I could come up with is that either they never directly interacted (that is, River saw him and new who he was, but whatever she managed to keep him from getting involved in what she was doing) or they only ever met under circumstances where it never made much of an impression on the Doctor. I haven't listened to the Big Finish adventures, I've just heard a little about them, so I can't say what circumstances they set up. All we know from the show (specifically "The Husbands of River Song") is that she knows what the Doctor's past incarnations looked like, not that she ever actually met any of them.

I think that the reason regenerations are so explosive now compared to the classic series is answered in "Night of the Doctor." Ohila from The Sisterhood of Karn gave him a special mixture of the elixir of life. When he asks will it hurt, she says yes. Plus, you see Ohila with top Gallifreian generals and leaders in a few episodes. I think it was the elixir that changed the way he regenerates. So, it might be safe to say that the Sisterhood might have weaponized regeneration for the Time Lords.

Then how come all the timelords glow when they regenerate now? Also as stated multiple times, the sisterhood of Karn has no business being in the lord president’s chamber or even on galifray. I always thought that Clara's TARDIS was the exact same place as the diner seen in the Impossible Astronaut, but it never occured to me that it's because Clara used it to go back in time to check in on the Doctor and help him along on one of his adventures much like her splinters did when she was trying to save him from the Great Intelligence. That would be genius! She could be watching him from the back room on her monitor so as to not interfere with what was going on, and of course to not have either the Doctor or River see her. It makes sense that she would miss him so much that she would try to go back in his history to at least observe him from afar (in a sense) and make sure he was all right. Just proves how much she loved him and how strong their connection to each other was. Besides, she has a TARDIS, why wouldn't she go back in time to try to see him again? It makes all the sense in the world, wouldn't we do the same thing if we were his Companion?

I'm glad River and 14 was included. I rewatched River's first appearance the day the 14th doctor was teased and the moment she mentioned his face I got very excited. I want to add that River describes their timelines together as coming from opposite ends but when River meets 12 it gives away the true nature of their timeline. Their life was never in any specific order. River's journeys with the doctor began with 11, then the older 14, the younger 10 and finally with 12 before her last moment with 10.

Given that the TARDIS literally tells the Doctor, "I may not have always taken you where you wanted, but I always took you where you needed to go." (Or something like that) you could argue that the Chameleon Circuit is "stuck in Police Box mode" for a similar reason, if you wanted. Honestly, I'd like to think it's to support the legend of The Doctor. The Good Man. The one who tries to save people. Throughout the universe, the blue Police Box should be known as the symbol of The Doctor. And maybe that makes less people shoot at it or something lol. Could even get into some real world stuff about how police should be trusted... but let's not jump into that black hole.

I've heard the theory that Series 7A happened out of order for the 11th Doctor from several articles concerning fan theories of the show. A couple of pieces of evidence holding up this theory were A: the Doctor, Amy and Rory going back in time during King Henry VIII's time in The Power of Three, despite having already done so in A Town Called Mercy (which was explained in some offscreen source as being the three were retrieving Rory's iPhone charger which was mentioned to have been accidently left behind in the latter episode); and B: the Doctor crying at the end of The Doctor, the Widow and the Wardrobe as that would be the last time he would see them. Some people even think in Pond Life (the five-part mini episode that served as a prequel to Series 7A), when the Doctor attempted to see his best friends but they were out, he was hoping to possibly see them again and say goodbye. This was also apparently why he was upset while he was leaving the voicemail he sent them. Also, the Doctor already explained in School Reunion that he's afraid of seeing his companions grow old and die while they're with him, as per why he didn't mention Sarah Jane or go back for her. And there have been some thoughts that the regeneration energy built up in the Doctor from when his 10th, 11th and 12th incarnations prolonged theirs for as long as they did. Did you not notice that the 8th, War, 9th, 10th (initially, that is) or 11th Doctors (the second time, anyway) didn't destroy anything when they changed and were in their TARDISes? Overall, one theory I can't help but shake off is all of the non-Doctor Who fictional characters believed to be Time Lords (Mary Poppins, James Bond, Miss Frizzle).

Also: 9. Jack’s “shady dealings” were something of an “ends justify the means”; in Adrift, all those people had been taken by the rift and couldn’t re-enter into society (like with Jonah Bevan, who had been traumatised). Meanwhile, in Children of Earth, Jack handed over those children because it was either give the 456 a few orphans or allow for humanity to be massively wiped out by a flu epidemic. Do you think he would see having someone arrested and killing another person’s girlfriend the same as that? 8. The face behind the original adjudicator/that previous Doctor was Graeme Harper, the assistant floor manager on Colony In Space and a director on both the Classic and Revived Series, The Sarah Jane Adventures and the lost stories Yellow Fever and How to Cure It and The Dark Dimension. In the novelisation of Colony in Space, The Doctor stated at one point that he believed the original adjudicator (who’s real name was Martin Jurgens) may have been killed by The Master to usurp his position (though this is just a thought, not fact). 6. There's another character in The Sarah Jane Adventures thought to be a Time Lord; Erasmus Darkening, the bad guy from Series 3's The Eternity Trap. His dress sense was kind of like that of the Time Lords, Sarah Jane thought his technology had similarities to the TARDIS and he was rather obsessed with living forever, like a Time Lord on his last life (Clyde even used The Doctor as an example of an alien that looks human while he and Rani were talking about Darkening).

Rory was the Master under a chameleon arch. That was how Prisoner Zero - the Master in his morphant "snake" form per the telemovie - actually escaped, and this explains Rory's anachronistic 1990 badge. The real human Williams, never seen on screen, was an orderly in Grace Holloway's hospital in the 90s. All the multi-form stuff was just extra morphants. And this is how Rory can die and die again. And why River, the Master's daughter, is a Time Lady. This is also the reason Eleven poked Rory in the head when they first met and said he has a "living but dormant mind". And, of course, the Master's Tardis, made invisible thanks to its working chameleon circuit, was parked on the duck pond - which is why there were no ducks there.

One common theory about the more explosive regenerations is that overall regenerations build in strength over time which is why Time Lords have a limit to them as eventually the build up would kill them outright.
@SinisterPixel
@SinisterPixel Жыл бұрын
My regeneration theory is that regenerations get more intense based on 1) how far along the cycle you are and 2) the severity of the damage that caused the regeneration. Matt Smith is a good example. Last in the traditional cycle and also he should have regenerated decades prior (John Hurt regenerated because he was "wearing a bit thin" and was in significantly better outward health than Smith). I also think it gets more explosive the longer the doctor tries to hold it in, like a lid on a boiling pot (see 10 and 12 who held their regenerations for most of their grace periods). 10s first regeneration into himself and Yana into Simms's Master were a lot less explosive because they didn't hold a regeneration back. Same with 9 into 10

My theory is that the Time Lords are a necessary paradox within the universe. For example the timeless child was already a time Lord with regenerative powers, possibly hinting that she was the last incarnation of the doctor, snatched back in time to provide the race with their main attribute. But I also think it gets more convoluted than this. When 10 encountered Jackson Lake, I do not think that it was a simple infostamp that he had absorbed, but a page from the cyberium ... in effect a genetic snapshot of the doctor (something that could not simply be removed). Armed with that knowledge (and practical immortality), Lake was able to create the first TARDIS, travelling to a Gallifrey that did not yet possess Intelligent life, thereby being able to guide their society as it emerged so that they were prepared for the arrival of the timeless child. This would explain why human appearance is prevalent, and the borderline obsession of some time Lords with earth.

It would be possible for River to have met future reincarnations of the Doctor. We know she is from the future but no specifics were give in the time period she came from. What comes to mind for me is the lines from The husbands of River Song. The part where she says that she is an archeologist from the future and that she dug him up, and then she says see you in 400 years. So she traveled 400 years to the future to dig up that wreck, so we have no idea how many times she appeared in between when she was on the ship with the Doctor and when she dug up that ship's wreck. There is a lot of fluidity with the timeline of River Song that it is possible that she meets up with the Doctor in the future.

A personal theory I've had since long before Clara went running up and down The Doctor's timeline, (Tom Baker era?) answers how The Doctor always seems to know a little bit more (I think) than perhaps they should: The Doctors memories are influenced by both directions of time, the past and the future. This would be a subconscious thing, thus he doesn't always know (Or does he? The Doctor Lies.) for sure, and why they're sometimes a little confused (especially after regeneration). As always thank you so very much for the videos. (I ❤The Riversong and 14 crossover idea!) While thinking about this, I was struck by a list I'd love to see: Show theories that aren't "cannon" but (at least some) fans wish they were! Like Riversong having a brother, who visited their grandad (Rory's Dad - As we saw in a storyboard, but wasn't filmed). And Dr. Moon (Colin Salmon) being "The Final Doctor" as Steven Moffat has been quoted about.

The reason why the NewWho regenerations look the way they do is not just better budget. It's because 9th Doctor regenerated like that because of the Time Vortex damaging his body (which had the same visual effect). When the Master then regenerated, the production team needed to show that what is happening is a regeneration without confusing the audience. So they used the same effect as before. When they then used it for the fake-out meta-regeneration to again make clear to the audience what is happening, it just kind of stuck and became lore. Also, the theory about weaponizing the regenerations would require you to ignore the retcon from Twice Upon a Time and Timeless Children.

Of course Clara has been watching over the Doctor before they met. She literally scattered herself across the Doctor's time stream to protect him from the great intelligence. The Doctor's regenerations started getting explosive after he forced his regeneration into the the 8th. They've shown a steady growth, even going so far as to deliberately make the 8ths regeneration smaller than the 9ths in the 50th special. Even the General's regeneration is just a mild inconvenience and is treated more like a slip and fall than a 'he's gonna blow'. River is not a reliable benchmark either as she is unique, being neither a timelord or having contact with timelords to be 'modified' even though she has a regeneration on par with the 9ths.

On the note of the exterior, I always assumed that Tardises operated somewhat like Transformers, as in taking a sample from an existing, disguise-worthy object and then store it in their data banks. From that on, basically every time the police box changes a bit, it just means that said scan/data is deteriorating or getting corrupted and the ship is just trying to patch it up from memory. Think of it as, trying to retouch a vintage photograph with AI. It doesn't exactly know what to do, but it's trying nonetheless.

Nah, the chamelean circuit is supposed to disguise the tardis as whatever meets the current objective best. It is a fairly redundent system, as the perception filter keeps anyone oblivious to the nature of the tardis from noticing it, only becoming important if the filter fails. Whatever diaguise the tardis takes though, it needs to be big enough to have space for a properly sized door, otherwise you can't leave it.

I don't look at theories very much so I never heard of any of these, but I did think of the Regeneration theory on my own, it makes a lot of sense for them to turn it into a weapon during the war, they usually lost consciousness during regeneration which would allow them to be captured by the Daleks and used give them the power of regeneration. Destroying the Daleks when regenerating would stop that from happening.

The BBC web short "The Night of the Doctor" in which the 8th Doctor regenerates at the beginning of the Time War with help from the Sisterhood of Karn apparently intended to justify the difference in his regenerations in modern series as distinct from the classic era, but that doesn't explain other Time Lords regenerating in the same way in modern shows. Perhaps the theory presented in your list occurred in combination with this info -- the Doctor (who had become a warrior) and the Sisterhood might have supported spreading the weaponizable form.

Disagreement on the Chameleon circuit theory. The doctor originally said it was broken because it refused to be anything other than a police box. He/she still does not grasp the obvious. Since we now know canonically that not only is the type 40 capsule intelligent but actually HAS a female personality AND that she considers herself to have stolen a Time Lord, not the other way around as the Doctor commonly claims. With this in mind it is completely reasonable to assume that the TARDIS has chosen a form and that is what she looks like. I personally suspect that the doctor could completely replace the circuit and it would change nothing. But if he politely ASKED her to change she might consider dressing up or doing a bit of CosPlay for a special occasion.

Comment 1) Clara Oswin Oswald stole my heart from the get-go, and she broke it when she died. It always hurts to see her die in season 9. I live for seasons 7 part 2, season 8, and most of season 9. I did hate the romance with Danny plotline, though. Admittedly, my hatred for that is mostly due to desiring her myself. Comment 2) I wouldn't be surprised if Jack manipulated Tosh and Owen. He lived a long time and his sense of morality was skewed due to that. Also, the 9 Doctor's manipulation of him didn't help matters either. Comment 3) From what little i know of The Corsair, due to reading the 13th Doctor comics, I rather liked her. I wonder if we'll see the swashbuckling version of her pop up at some time? Comment 4) River meeting the 14th Doctor... I do believe we may actually see that. I mean, she knew about Donna's fate. Something, the Doctor would keep to himself no matter what. It is the worst thing he was ever responsible for in his mind. At least, as far as I know. As Donna is apparently returning for the 14th Doctor specials as well... I think there's a good chance River will meet the post Doctor-Donna version of Donna Noble who would then let slip abour River Song knowing her horrible fate. The Eighth Doctor is the key in the shift of artron energy 'shedding'. When Seven became Eight, it was essentially the same as previous ones. When Eight died, and the Sisterhood of Karn brought him (temporarily) back to life, they gave him elixir options to choose how... and into who, he would regenerate. He picked warrior to fight the Time War. As he goes from Eight to a Doctor of WAR, we get the now familiar artron energy explosive fountains. For those who try to point out about the 'prequel' Doctors of Chibnall et al. having the modern style... The Children of Time concept was a strategem of the Daleks in the Time War. Without elaboration, these earlier than Hartnell's Doctor incarnations had the same pattern as extrapolated from the War Doctor's physiognomy... How's THAT for a theory? A REGENERATION theory...

However, she'd know that was with 11 and that he didn't do diaries prior to 11. She MUST have thought 10 was actually a later incarnation, not an earlier one. More to the point she had to KNOW he used the same face twice of the Byzantium question would make no sense. Since it was a different incarnation than the one who'd been on the Byzantium then either he was older and the answer was YES or younger and the answer NO. If the latter, then again trying to do diaries makes no sense. If the former, then she'd already know the answer and the question doesn't help her at all. Therefore she must have met 14, done diaries and at least be aware it was a second go around with that face.

The second time we met River it felt like it’s not the second but forth of fifth time so I think there is a possibility she’s simply had other meetings with Ten in his later solo travels

Didn’t Clara say the 1st to specifically take that tarsus particular tardis when she got spread out through his timeline Also I reckon that from the moment 12 regenerated to 13 that they have been in a parallel universe hence the change to the master and the Ruth doctor existing and at the end of flux when they where in the void between universe coz of the flux wave they ended back in their proper universe

A theory I came up with (and since learned that others have also thought of) is that "the Hybrid" was actually what we saw at the end of "The Timeless Children".

Another early appearance of the sonic screwdriver was in the novelization of "The Faceless Ones". The Doctor needs to open a crate, so author Terrence Dicks just retconned the device he used into being the sonic. (It still fits with its introduction in "Fury from the Deep", as Jamie wasn't there when the Doctor used it in "The Faceless Ones".)

On weaponising the regenerations, Eleven literally destroyed a Dalek fleet using his regeneration and Ten ripped the interior of his Tardis apart. Makes me wonder if Time Lords can control how much energy they throw out when they’re on the verge of death as a defence mechanism. Aside Ten, who probably did it more out of frustration, especially as he didn’t destroy anything with his “false” regeneration.

There’s a theory that originally when Moffat wrote silence in the library Tennant hadn’t announced he was leaving and that there was a version of series 5 written that was completely different with him regenerating in the big bang story or a complete different episode all together. As there is a completely different version of series 5 where he doesn’t regenerate until the end.

River meeting the 14th Doctor would work great! Though if you read the novelization of Day Of The Doctor by Moffat, he shows her meeting an older Ten, which would explain why she knows his face in the library but has never seen him this young. I can't accept the Big Finish concept of her meeting even younger doctors though (and that's on Big finish, not Moffat), because of the impact that meeting a doctor who didn't know her had on her in the library. Like she said in day of the moon, one day she'll look into his eyes and he won't know who she is, and it will kill her. And it did. Meeting any earlier incarnation takes away from that, so I can't get behind it. As far as her confusion about Byzantium - I think it's similar to when Missy was telling Clara about some adventure the doctor had, where she didn't remember which face it was, since it's all just the doctor to her. And also when the Doctor told Bill about the Master, and wasn't sure which gender either of them were at the time. When you're a time traveler dealing with an immortal time traveler who changes faces, things get blurred. I like the concept of the diner being Clara's TARDIS. She wouldn't even need to hide, none of them knew her face yet, nor would 11 remember it under the circumstances.

For the theory about the TARDIS's Chameleon circit not being broken, I can't remember exactly but I remember seeing one clip (or maybe it was during my current rewatch of the series I can't remember) where The Doctor seemed to imply that he fixed the Chameleon circit ages ago but simply chooses to keep it as a Police Box because he likes the design? Could be wrong though.

I think its important to note the episodes where there Tardis materializes in a heavily populated place as a police box and no one seems to notice. Maybe the chameleon circuit still works a bit.

The chameleon circuit isn't broken, and that's canon. When The Doctor Donna explains how the circuit could be fixed, what most forget is that Donna and The Doctor's minds became like one. What Donna knew, The Doctor already knew.

My theory about the chameleon circuit is that it was stuck on police box by design ever since the time lords/ division decided to wipe the doctor's memories. . We saw the fugitive doctor's TARDIS was also a blue Police box but she's pre- Hartnell... possibly the last before Hartnell. My theory for this is that when the doctor's memory was wiped, they also had to wipe his TARDIS memory. Otherwise there'd be a record of all his/her travels. But wiping a TARDIS... that by default is connected to every moment and place in the universe...creates a break in a timeline which has to cause problems of some kind. . So basically the time lords set it so that it's maiden voyage post memory wipe is to mid 20th century Earth, UK, a place where a blue Police box would be expected. . And the amnesiac doctor is none the wiser that his wonky TARDIS navigation and chameleon circuit are that way all because of the cover up.

Timelords are the lords of time, they sent Jamie back to his time where he was more than likely killed on sight. But outside of that, how does that account for Susan? She was with 1 when they stole the tardis. And also I don’t think you can’t truly erase a tardis’ memory since their consciousness works in the 4th and 5th dimensions. After all, 11 deleted 10’s console room, and she still had it stored in her memory

@@tgiacin435 it's not too hard for a clever person to manipulate someone into doing something thinking it's of their own volition - some would say that's a big part of parenting. . And while it would certainly be tricky to hide part of a TARDIS history from itself, seeing as how they were able to create and guide the evolution of entire universes , I think they'd be up to the task of hacking a TARDIS...an old outdated one at that.

As for the weaponized regenerations, I took it as the regeneration cycle simply gets more and more difficult/energetic the more times it happens.
