I work in the IT department of a UK TV company not even remotely connected to the Beeb.. but we all love the Doctor, don't we? To mark the start of the new Doctor (Matt Smith), there was a Dr Who themed day around our offices... and one of my colleagues made a 6ft Weeping Angel, frozen, snarling and fingers outstretched mid pounce... it was a masterpiece.. and put about 5 ft inside the door of our office - it scared the life out of more than a few folk who weren't paying attention to things as they wandered in....!

If I'd walked into the office before my morning coffee, turned a corner, and seen that, I would have jumped ten feet. If I'd had some of the life-giving beverage, I'd have jumped only two feet, the dissolved in laughter. That's brilliant!

I was at the convention in Columbus. Georgia (Magnum Opus Con) where Patrick Troughton died. I saw him Friday, and by Saturday morning he was gone. I saw Anthony Ainley that morning in the merch area, and he told several of us about the actor's passing. Around 12pm, the con-organizer--who was clearly in agony--finally broke the news to everyone. It was an incredibly surreal and sad experience, and I truly resent those who have decided to turn speculation about his cause of death into a game. I feel that it is a shameful thing to do and really disrespects Troughton's memory.

I had to do a double take when Ellie said April Walker was taller than Jon Pertwee! I mean, not impossible, but Jon Pertwee was 6' 3" (191cm) tall. But then I saw April next to John Cleese, and he's only about an inch taller than Jon Pertwee. No way Ms. Walker was taller than Jon. I checked (and there is some variation depending on the source, so I went with the largest figure), and she is about 5' 8" (173cm) tall. So not short, but not the giant implied by this video, and certainly not tall enough to overshadow Jon. Elizabeth Sladen was 5' 4" (162cm), which is definitely shorter than April, but not significantly (although, the difference in height between April and Elizabeth is about the same as between Jon and April). I can't imagine Jon Pertwee feeling threatened by April's height, it doesn't really ring true, although I wasn't there, so I honestly can't say. Jon certainly wasn't lacking in the confidence department, unless I've truly missed something fundamental about the man. The only thing I can imagine is that April, being taller on average, may have had more confidence and presence than Jon was used to, and a "she's too tall" comment may have been bandied around as a "joke", but even that doesn't ring true. There were few performers at the time with more presence and confidence than Elizabeth Sladen, she could go toe-to-toe with the best of them. My guess is that the chemistry wasn't there (as stated in the video), and Jon made an off-hand comment in that mischievous way that he had, not intending it to be serious, even if it did smack of chauvinism, and then, like today, it got blown way out of proportion. Apparently April Walker was paid for the full season in any case (again, according to internet sources, so I'm not certain if that info is 100% reliable), something to do with having already been cast, contracts and union rules, etc. And no guarantee that her portrayal of the character would have been as iconic and beloved as Elizabeth Sladen's. Companions come and go, and generally only the die-hard fans, and fans of that era remember them or know who they are. But everybody knows Sarah-Jane Smith, and that is entirely down to Ms Sladen's portrayal.

I'm watching a video telling me these are 10 secrets I didn't know, yet I have a DVD with both pilots which I've owned for several years, and a VHS tape even older.....and I watched the transmitted version on Nov 23 1963, while my parents and grandparents were still processing the assassination of the American President..... Also love the rapid side step "I'm not going to discuss (Susan) but it's too complicated..." No, it's not, really. The Timeless Child nonsense is just Chibnall's conceit. He had no knowledge of, or respect for, the early canon of the show. The only way to resolve the Timeless Child's created plotholes is to airbrush Susan out of the canon altogether, Or airbrush the Timeless Child out of continuity, just as the "half human" comment has been disregarded by subsequent writers. I know which I would prefer.
@SomeUniqueHandle
@SomeUniqueHandle Жыл бұрын
The Timeless Child stuff is garbage, but why couldn't Susan be the Doctor's grandchild? Maybe they decided to experiment by not wiping out the Doctor's memories starting with that incarnation and let the Doctor grow up and have a family. Heck, for all we know the Doctor has lots of family members that even the Doctor isn't aware of.

Love this! I really hope the weeping angels aren't real, or I'll never be able to walk past a statue again! 🙈 Also in the series 2 episode School Reunion, there's a bit where the doctor walks into the computer room at the school and sarah jane and rose start laughing uncontrollably because they've been swapping embarrassing stories about the doctor. In reality, a make up artist painted a fake moustache on david tennants face without billie piper or elisabeth sladen knowing. So when he walked on set to film that scene they both started laughing uncontrollably! 😂😊

I have to admit I wasn't taken with the weeping angels as villains. Originally, as the,, what was it, "gentle assassins," they were an interesting even if dubious on its merits concept. But then they became the all-purpose plot device, conveniently capable of whatever a storyline needed ("the image of an angel is an angel," for example). And every time someone said "How do you kill a stone," I'd think "Have you ever heard of a sledgehammer?"
@narrowminer1131
@narrowminer1131 Жыл бұрын
@@whoviating To be fair they are called "quantum locked" as the "scientific" term the show uses. I'm not a scientist and don't really know what that means but it sounds as though they are not simply stone but their atoms are locked in relative position to each other unable to be moved except as one singular object which essentially means you literally cannot damage them while looking at them it is "the ultimate defense mechanism" after all. That's what I think and the whole "How do you kill a stone" was just the Doctor dumbing it down for his companions/the audience.
@darkamora5123
@darkamora5123 Жыл бұрын
@narrowminer11 meh he's dumped enemies in black holes before. Get them on board the TARDIS and dematerialize from around them. He's done the reverse before (materializing around people) so quantum locked or not they should be killable.
@Croftice1
@Croftice1 Жыл бұрын
@@darkamora5123 How does the Doctor get them aboard the TARDIS without touching them, because you can't touch them. Oh of course, you've said it yourself, by materializing around them. Easier said, than done. They can move, if no one watches them, the moment someone is watching them, locking them in place and the TARDIS materializes, they aren't watched anymore, unless the Doctor focuses on them instead of piloting the TARDIS from that exact moment on. And then what? They are aboard the TARDIS, which was their original goal in Blink, "get the box and feed from its energy". So you'll be intentionally serving them their greatest meal. They would thank you for the feast of their lives. Really good idea. I don't know, how the people on the Byzantium ship managed to get a Weeping Angel into the vault, but most likely the Angel itself wanted to be there, since Byzantium was revealed to be the Angel's rescue mission to save its kind on the planet, so it made the capture easy, I guess.

Mickael Jackson, Peter Capaldi, and Robin Williams were in the running for what became the 1996 TV Movie "The Enemy Within" a role that went to Paul McGann, at one point Leonard Nimoy was attached to direct, but the studio would only permit him to do so only if he agreed to play The Master as well, this did not sit well with the producer and Nimoy left the project. Paul McGann also hated the wig he had to wear in the production and in marketing photos as it was very itchy, this would not have been needed had he not been fresh off the set of Alien3 where he had a shaved head.

The only thing about the angels I am curious about, is why sometimes they can touch you and you are fine, and other times they send you back to the past...like when...SPOILERS...river has her hand in the angels grasp and has to...seriously SPOILERS. break her wrist to get it out. or when Octavian on the Byzantine ship had their arms around his neck...but other times they get transported back in time like...Angels take Manhattan...I really wish we could get an extra length episode so we can really say good bye to Amy and Rory...though...Rory is a robot centurion who has waited over a thousand years, why does he start aging now? Shouldn't he still be young by the time they are looking at the head stones in that cemetery? if it only had 2 pilots, then it did not go through a few before broadcast..it went through one and was redone, the second went to broadcast which means....only 1 incarnation before broadcast which is a whole 2-19 LESS than you insinuate, as a few is 3-20 and a couple is 2(sometimes 3). Literally not even a couple or a few...lets just start using any word to mean whatever we want. whats the point of English being so strict, when they still don't use the proper words? Maybe they can stop using the U in words too?

Regarding the "missing" angel, I can offer an explanation. My late father was for many years head groundsman / gravedigger at our town's main civic cemetery. He was extremely upset and angry to arrive at work one morning to discover that vandals had destroyed an elaborate memorial of two angels "watching over" a grave. As there was no one to pay for the repairs (they too, were long dead) the angels were simply made safe and removed

Surely it's not about the money.That may upgrade the visuals but if the story behind it is poor then no amount of shiny CGI will help.

well the weeping angels... are they that bad? i mean... you know that even though their super defense mechanism they're still just made of stone right? can't you just kick an arm of it? or use metal to hit it or so? and what's the worst thing they do to you? they offer you a free ride in the past... people would pay MONEY to live in the past. "hey guys... i wanna buy microsoft courses for 50€, thanks" what a terrible destiny...

£2000 ? is that old money? if so, then thats a lot. Old money is 240p in the £ so would be £4800. My Dad bought a semi detached in 1966 in london for £3500 (old money). Yearly wage was for average workers was £750 per annum, I think the mini brand new was £500. So really more like £60,000 per episode.{edit: In todays money}
@michaelhaddock8636
@michaelhaddock8636 Жыл бұрын
Not really. You are right that inflation (RPI or CPI) while it is useful for comparisons over short periods are usually pretty terrible over longer periods. The comparison with wages is a much better one. However, on the decimalisation point, old money was 240d (not p) to the pound. On decimalisation old pence (d) mapped to new pence (p) at the rate of 2.4 to 1. For example the one shilling piece (12d) remained in circulation after decimalisation, but was worth 5 new pence (5p). Similarly the sixpence remained in circulation, but worth 2.5p. The old pre-decimalisation pound maps directly to the pound after decimalisation.

Going back the unearthly child. Yep the very first doctor who and sorry to say I liked doctor who better once his granddaughter left. But every now and again, thinks to the over used of her screaming (yes I know she was a teen - but do not forget she is pose to be smarter then humans) the writers made Suzanne - doctor who’s grandchild, into a older teen that was scared of almost everything. Yes I do get sh)tty with how people scream to much in movies. See a dead person ‘scream, yes it is scary and yes I could very well scream - but I hope I would not for if that person was killed - the killer could still be there, and I do not think that so many people would scream on laying eyes on a dead person. O that screaming - was so over done and did not seam to have any realistic reason for it.
