You're not wrong, but SINCE THE FIRST MOVIE, all the saga movies (pre-Disney) had a consistent story and vision. Maybe with a few inconsistencies, yes, but not the wildly different overall visions and directions! Disney came along and decided to "pass the torch" from one completely different writer/director to the next without caring about any overall story arc, or making sure that everything stays within the vision of the previous movie. Episode VII: Luke Skywalker literally wears full Jedi regalia in a cliffhanger ending Episode VIII: oh, he's not a Jedi anymore. Episode VII: General Hux and Kylo Ren seem to have a rivalry in which they try to one-up each other. Episode VIII: Hux is the butt of every joke. Episode VII: Implies that Rey has some great connection to a character of the past Episode VIII: Nah, she's special because she is. The difference is this: George Lucas did it better.

George Lucas has said in some interviews that he had nine movies planned. He's also said that he had twelve in a different interview. He didn't even plan to have Vader be Luke's father until writing Empire. Also Leia wasn't going to be his sister, and ROTJ was going to end with Vader dying, The Emperor escaping and Luke going off to find his sister, and another trilogy was going to directly follow the OT. But George Lucas was exhausted from having to self finance every OT movie because he wasn't a part of the directors guild, and he had gone through a rough divorce around the time of Jedi. Essentially he wrapped up the OT early. Don't pretend like there was this grand plan to the whole thing, he was essentially the original J.K. Rowling; someone who came up with a fun and inspired fictional world, but eventually their ego took control of them and started making downright bizarre and self-contradictary, retroactive additions to their beloved works.

Killing Hicks and Knewt from the Aliens franchise was a big mistake in my opinion, for me the Alien saga ended with Alien III, never saw Alien Resurrection but I don't think I missed anything. Also ending every Terminator movie with a note of hope that's proves to be bogus on the following movie, like everything they did in Terminator 2 was to prevent Judgement Day and the raising of the machines in Terminator 3 we learn that the rising is meant to happen and no matter what you do to prevent the catastrophe the machines in the future can keep sending killing Androids, that's one of the problems with stories that include time traveling, the future where the machines had a chance to arise was supposed to be erased by the events of the second movie and the death of the scientist who started it all.

The Hobbit definitely deserved to be three movies. It's not just "one short book" Tolkien wrote so many key events as just like a few pages. It was like a cliff notes version of LotR. I read the Hobbit first and when I tried to read Fellowship of the Ring the first time I had to keep putting it down and restarting because I could not get through the sheer amount of detail he put into people walking around, before they even got to Tom Bombadil or anything. Just some guys walking In the Hobbit instead of like 50 pages of deep detail about walking it's more like a page but on screen that wouldn't translate well, it would end up like the last season of Game of Thrones with people rushing all over the place.

What in the hell is "Mackizmo"?!?!? Do you mean Machismo? If you did, the middle of the world is literally pronounced "Cheese"... Mah-cheese-mo. Edit: I also think that Fast and The Furious is a far greater example of a franchise completely devolving into the stars being god like action heroes. The first film was about a bunch of street racers in realistic street racing and action sequences and then it got progressively less and less realistic until they were dropping cars out of planes and somehow having them land and be able to drive away like it was no big deal.
@TheNightFlower

The Hobbit was not the first book to be split into three films. That idea goes to Atlas Shrugged. And Atlas Shrugged is getting a remake as four part miniseries. Having no connection to the films that the novel was based on.

Not having a plan wasn't Jacksons fault, the woman in the commentary says "He never got the chance to prep these movies" It's referencing the fact the studio extended the project and demanded a trillogy, making him scramble to grab whatever content he could to fill the runtime and meet deadlines.

There are 3 main problems: 1. There's a logical end to the series and the makers don't respect that in hopes of making more money, i.e., Star Wars 2. The film makers change the source material, i.e., The Hobbit. Tolkien did not need fixing. Jackson should have stuck closer to the source material. 3. Not understanding what made the original great, like character and plot development. Instead they inject more explosions, stunts and other special effects, i.e., Die Hard, James Bond, etc.

Poor old John McTiernan never gets any acknowledgement. Talks about Die Hard never mentions the director of the everyman Diehards 1 and 3, the ones he directed. Also directed the only good Predator movie and arguably the best sub movie... The Hunt for Red October. Can we all take a moment here, hold hands, and remember John, the never mentioned greatest action movie director of all time.

They had planned to do three. And then Bay wanted to stop. Yet, the producers wanted another one and asked Bay to return by giving him money. Even TLK was planned as the final chapter, that's why there was stuff in promo like "the Final Chapter". But of course, producers decided to do a short end credits scene in the last minute to bait another sequel. Bay wanted TLK to be a two-parter at first and Paramount said NO and were planning more films.

Shoehorning in Captain Marvel at the last second might be MCU's mistake. Prequels are ALWAYS problematic, and having one set before 20+ films is bound to have issues. I still can't believe that Nick Fury would let thousands of New Yorkers die without trying to contact CM (Avengers 1). And don't say: "Oh, maybe he tried off screen." No, he didn't. The Earth is invaded and your third most powerful weapon you leave on the shelf? Also, SHIELD only started making Weapons of Mass Destruction after the Destroyer blew up a town in Thor 1. You'd think they would have started right after the events of CM.

It's the overall common mistake Hollywood makes in general. Not understanding what makes the movies popular with the people in the first place. It reinforces the prevailing theory that actors, directors and producers live in a self promoting bubble and are completely out of touch with the rest of the country. I guess that's what happens when you only see dollar signs, you are blind to everything else.

IMHO (and potentially an unpopular opinion), Terminator 3 should have happened within 2-3yr of T2, continuing on from the flash-forwards and the knowledge known of the future, and then build a story out on John Connor struggling heavily to win against Skynet and the struggle of sending Kyle Reese back… we should never have seen Skynet fall, but instead close the loop on Reese going back. Could have used the original actors most successfully. After that, Hollywood could fk with the franchise in a reboot fashion any which way they liked….! 👌
@AndyBarkerBee

PS: my idea is not a sequel in fact to T2, but a prequel.. showing us the events that lead to T1. In my opinion, the way I see T2, everything was destroyed. Everything…! And therefore Skynet will not exist post T2. This is the reason all other films have failed since. They think they’re sequels, but the story is done… over!!
