I live alone and on a fixed income. One thing I do and love is cook something I love and make enough to eat all week. I do this with soup, a casserole, a roast used different ways all week. I bought a beef roast this week and cut it into 3 Chunks and froze it I will crock pot one with carrots and potatoes, next day hash, third day it will go into veg beef soup. These roasts are expensive but really worth it when you plan

Yes I'm a big advocate for cost per wear! I refuse to support fast fashion so I buy high quality thrift items, I brought a brand new thrifted pair of leather boots many years ago for $60, new they were $199, there cost of wear is well under 20cents now per wear! I haven't needed to re heel then yet but I polish them very regularly. Being frugal means caring for what you already have well😊

When during the first few months of the Pandemic, I stocked up on a lot of non-perishable food not knowing what the lock down would entail. I go to the food pantry monthly as I'm retired. Now I have challenged myself to not buy anything for 3 months. I can make it and I know it. Christmas presents will be made from my supplies in my home. I'm going for it.

I've heard the tip about putting one thing back before, but never tried it. Because - we always stick to the list. But I was struck by the thought; what if we considered out of everything in the cart - what would we least miss? I think I will pose that question to my husband the next time we get groceries. And put something back. Wouldn't it be a hoot, if when you got to the check-out they had a big cart with a big sign that said "PUT ONE THING BACK, RIGHT HERE IN THIS CART". Something else that struck me from the article was something I was thinking about the other day. He talked about staying home, being active and being fit while saving money. My thought was what if I viewed cleaning, de-cluttering and organizing as a form of entertainment. As in, I'm blessed to have a home to live in, how about I enjoy keeping it clean and tidy. What if I chose to see house-cleaning as entertainment and fun. I'm at home and I'm not spending money and I'm having fun and feeling a sense of pride knowing I'm making my environment more peaceful and enjoyable.

The 3 major credit reporting agencies have a FREE credit report each year. Instead of checking all of them at once, spread them out and get one every 4th month. Example: January, TransUnion; May, Equifax; September, Experian. Next year, start over. Yep, I sure do know about checking the cost per wearing!! In the high school I went to, one year of Consumer Math was REQUIRED for graduation, and we did have to do the cost per wearing for several pieces of clothing. Same for cost per mile of gas and maintenance on the car, etc. etc. Did tax returns, "bought" a house. Additionally, one year for Home Ec for the girls and one year of shop for the boys. Awww....back in the mid-fifties. Best education ever!! Only thing I'd change now is one year of Home Ec and one year of shop for both girls and boys.

CPW. As an Accountant this speaks my language. I rarely buy an item of clothing that doesn't get worn a lot. Like Kate, I don't spend much on clothing. I think mine would end up as pennies per wear :-).

I host anywhere from 8-30 people in our home every two weeks and I have stopped using disposable plates/utensils/cups. I use the dishes/cups/silverware I have and love both the cost savings AND the lower impact on trash. It really opened my eyes to just how many plates and cups people use at these dinners…one person might use 2-4 cups and 2-4 plates!!! It’s ridiculous!

Hi KSquad - I don't know about everyone else, but I DEFINITELY need this No Spend January challenge!!! I set a goal to save up $20,000 this year but have fell short. I saved ~$12,800, but have to pull out $2,400 to have a very dangerous, large tree removed that is growing over a third of my house. I am pretty bummed out about this, but I try to keep reminding myself that I "reached for the moon and landed among the stars"... meaning that I probably would have saved $0.00 if I hadn't made an effort. I strive to regain that momentum that I had last year in January toward saving!

Being flexible with my budget like you are. My mom is going to be moving in with me so I needed to buy some dishes (I only have 2 plates & two bowls since my husband died). I found a set of 4 salad plates and 4 "dinner" plates on sale but did not have the money in my budget. I realized that I really didn't need anything from the grocery store this week except bananas, peppers, and baby carrots, so I moved the money I needed from groceries to "gifts" and paid for it that way. I no longer feel guilty when I have to make changes like this to my budget.

I do that alot when shopping online. I don't think I did it enough in store. I have to start reviewing my carts. In fact, I shopped a thrift store last fall and picked out three things, got to the counter to pay and only kept one. I did not think I should even keep that but now I have worn it a few times and I LIKE IT on me. It is a completely different style of casual to me and I am glad I didn't put it back, too. It was a thrift purchase after all. Everything half price that day. But I have wasted money at thrift stores..thinking I liked things. But in the years later--now--I have thrown out and donated as I clean out to move. I have to figure this out somehow!

Aside from the easy "save on groceries""... Clothes are my big focus and the topic "Cost per wear" is my mantra!!! ❤️❤️❤️... I always check the quality of the item, regardless of the store. I refuse to buy clothes from Target because of the poor quality and I don't shop online because I can't evaluate the item. I have still have clothes that I bought years ago and I never buy "fast fashion". My clothes can be interchangeable because they are the timeless colors of styles.

Tip for disposeble sponges and disposeble cleaning cloths I cut them up so I have 2 to 3 more out of 1 sponge and 4 times more towels out of a single. I use cheap toiletpaper as papercloths for cleaning up spilled items on the floor or fatty bits on a plate or in pans etc. But I use washable ones for normal use. I did yoga at home today and only buy items on list (25% cheaper groceries bill). Be happy to join you in no spent January, for me having frugal buddies around and short-term goals is the best way to succes. Great weekend everyone! ❤️

Calculate cost per serving for food, especially meat, veggies and fruit. I set my grocery budget by deciding what I'm willing to spend per meal and then shop and meal plan accordingly. If one meal isn't as costly, that money can be spent on a meal later in the day.

I'm lazy. I cook from cheapest ingredients. Egg fried rice, vegetable tofu stir fried noodles, beans and rice from various country's styles, baked potato topped with baked beans and cheese, etc. I also stock up on sale items for products I use. Calculating price per serving daily would drive me crazy. I calculate when I first use a recipe and then again only if price increases.

I started calculating cost per serving years ago when Amy Dacyzyn had it in her book. I focused on protein first. Then I did major ingredients fir the dishes I make . I did this for several. Because I do soreadsheets, these ingredients are linked to my price book so the costs for these recipes automatically updates. My meal planning centers on in season vegetables too. It’s just a fun hobby!

I actually have an example of point 1 and 4. I was in Hobby Lobby 2 days ago. I wanted to buy 4 items. I left the store with nothing. I had to laugh at point 4. I was shopping years ago for a black tie event and found the perfect thing. The first thing my mom said was how expensive it would be since she didn't think I would wear it again. I actually got more than a dozen wears and retired it to my niece to use for costume in school play. I hope to be able to do a no spend January and at least a low spend February. March is always an expensive month for me. Great video. Enjoy being a part of the squad.

I can get on board with most of these. My elderly mother lives with me, though, and she says she cannot live without paper towels. Putting something back in the grocery store is the most helpful. #8 (eliminate most disposable products from your life) speaks to me the most because it’s been something I’ve been trying to improve on over the last year. The other’s I’ve already mastered and implemented into my life. Reusable items I’m loving are: Kitchen: Dish sponges (washable or throw in the dishwasher) Scrubby (I use the plastic baggies you get with garlic, shallots, ginger and stuff them inside each other and rubber band it) works beautifully. Cloth napkins (have sets for all seasons and holidays; really fun and I think my best purchase of all) Cloth paper towels (still struggling; have a cat; but I use old socks when available to clean up after him) Sandwich and snack bags (also rinse and reuse bread bags for storage) Dish covers (no need for plastic wrap) Silicone mats for baking (still use foil to line my oven and bake potatoes but that’s it. No parchment paper either. Reusable straws and bamboo utensils (for lunch boxes) Water bottles/containers Trash can liner(washable)(we are vegetarians so no nasty meat germs to deal with🤮) French press coffee maker (no need for coffee liners) Shopping: Grocery bags (my store gives a .05 discount/bag brought in) Gift giving: Reusable cloth bags Reusable gift wrapping (yes I do get all these back to reuse again) Some gift wrapping squares I’ve pick up at fabric stores, Lush, and Marley’s Monsters Bandannas work great too Also reuse bags I’ve gotten from retailers Bathroom: Washable Q-tips (make-up one too) Washable facial rounds (no cotton balls or squares) Washable menstrual pads (also use a wet bag to put used pads in before washing)(I only use cloth pads at home not confident enough when out and about) Wash rags (no throw out shower sponges) Shower flosser/water pick (only floss I have is what my dentist gives me 🤣) Washable pail liner Cleaning supplies: Washable feather duster Washable floor duster (no need for swifter sheets) Laundry Room: Wool dryer balls (no dry sheets/fabric softener needed) found mine at TJMaxx for cheap! Little money saved and good for the environment too. Most of these items I purchased from Marley’sMonsters.com

As well as my older sister which a recommended this channel 2 earlier this week! Everybody have a happy frugal Friday and an awesome weekend! Stay frugal my friends!

I was inspired by you to have some days when i do not spend anything as you do on Sundays. I agreed with my husband to spend only 3 days / week . The benefit is that you take time to think about your spendings and you scheadule the spendings throughout the month.

I really appreciate the suggestion of having a unique budget every month. You are the first one I have heard who really seems to suggest this. Since each month and season have different events and expenses, why not plan and budget for that? Sometimes, I think the simplest suggestions are the best 👍

About the cost per wear, yes, I tend to apply that, especially with dressier clothes by keeping in mind that I won't wear them a lot at all so It shouldn't cost me a lot (even if I want to feel fancy ). In the same idea, I'm ok to spend way more on items I will wear on an everyday basis and make great use of them, which is finally a question of CPW.

Hi Kate !!! I agree a lot of people I know don’t care about my budgeting etc but thank goodness you are here to get my fix haha 😆 I disagree with the article about buying something with a coupon- if I can get a new product for free or next to nothing that is one cheap thrill that doesn’t cost a lot and fun to try something new in a frugal way - take care 🙃 💜

Love the one about cost of clothing per wear. I used to buy only second hand clothes, until I realized my new clothes get worn more and I’m opt to take better care of them. So despite the lower price tag of thrifted clothes, I anticipate my new clothes are lower in cost per wear. I also buy less if I’m buying new vs used. Very interesting.

Hi Kate! I’m definitely going to start putting back some stuff before paying for my groceries and clothes. Never thought about it. I do have experience with CPW, special when I buy jackets or winter clothes, I calculated how many winters will I be able to wear them. Thanks for the tips!! :)

Cost per wear or use is a huge because if you purchase trendy clothes rather than stylish clothes or shoes they will generally have a greater cost wear. I do the same with tools as this process keeps me focused on what I need, not just what I want. Keep up the good work.

We often as a family talk about cost per unit. And sometimes we take it into other areas other than food. Think about maybe the deck that we built a few years ago, how many times have you used it and what is the cost per used down to now… It’s kind of fun to do and it helps you realize what you really need and what you might not need

Yes. I have thought about cost per wear. It's why I do not buy shoes from Target (Walmart, etc). I only buy Birkenstocks (summer/spring wear) and Blundstones (autumn/winter wear). Well under 25 cents per wear.

My daughter and I do #1 when we shop together at the dollar stores :) It's amazing how much $$ we save doing this each time. I think the cost per wear thing is one people have thought of it just didn't have a name. For example, If you are out to buy a new dressy outfit for special occasions, many will ask themselves "how many times will I really wear this?" This is why I choose to keep this kind of clothing simple ( aka the little black dress!) and change the accessories to fit the occasion. tfs 🥰🍂🍃🍁🦃🌬️🌛🧡💗✝️🥰🍂🍃🍁🦃🌬️🌛🧡💗✝️ The K cups are a six pack... I'll have them forever! :)
