I went from shooting everything in raw to shooting everything in jpeg using a custom recipe based on classic chrome. Then created a preset from scratch that I use as a starting point to edit them with in Lightroom. Results are amazing

Hi Omar. I really liked how you showed some different jpg results from your camera, great stuff. I particularly enjoyed when you were talking about the different values for colors, saturation and highlights you added to different profiles. Are there any common profile recipes that you lean towards? Have you done any videos were you talk about the different colors and settings you have made for the different profiles? Great stuff! Looking forward to part 2

This is the start of my fifth year of shooting with Fuji cameras and I still often look at the jpegs and get excited about how awesome the colors are ... in the 10 years of shooting with a Canon that never happened, not knocking Canon...but I just love using Fuji cameras.

How do you not have every single photographer following your channel? I don't even shoot Fuji, but I love the quality of your productions and the audio is always MASTERFUL. And, you provide a ton of advice and inspire the love of shooting PICTURES! You really inspire me to minimize my pixel-peeping, technical detailing nitpicking and just enjoy my gear. Which tempts me to join Fuji! Lol. We'll see. Great work, as always.

Omar I always find your videos very interesting and helpful. I have anXT3 and an XPro 3 and try to use just my iPad for organising and editing photos rather than my old MacBook,. I am trying various recipes for custom film simulated JPEGs as well as taking RAW. I set the cameras to save RAW on one SD card and JPEGs on the other and Import the JPEGs into Photos on the iPad and separately import the RAW (if the shots justify if ) into a Files folder on the iPad (backing up in iCloud), and import them into LR . This means I can do a few quick light edits on the decent JPEGs and put them into shared albums in Photos and can do more serious edits in LR and save them back into Files as DNG or TIFF for printing etc. These are saved in two places, Files in iCloud and in the Adobe cloud. This workflow is particularly useful because the family aren’t interested in my “artistic” photos but like to see the family shots quickly! I don’t know if you think this makes sense. Thanks Philip.

Omar iv been subbed to you since you were at about 20k subs. I don't comment really at all just wanted to tell you that you deserve the success and traction thats starting to come your way. Amazingly entertaining and informative videos. I loved the picture of the purple flowers from Tel-Aviv. I actually recognized it as Israel before you said so, the Jerusalem stone and the architecture is unlike anywhere else. If you're ever back in Israel send me a message if you want some amazing places to shoot that most tourists would never find.

I so like that you come from a photographer‘s standpoint, not of a technician‘s. So this is again an awesome clip for it is treating just the way we can make use of the film simulations. As much as I sat down with LR in the past, I’ve completely changed to rely on the film styles, when I shifted gradually to Fujifilm. I love to shoot pro negative or Acros, but now you make me happily sink into tweaking all those other possibilities. That said I replaced my Canon gear with Sony for the serious and commission work and Leica with Fuji for my shooting lust. I ended up with xt20 XF16/1.4, XF 52/1.2, XF 35/1.4 (man, where do I get so fast lenses so compact and affordable?) and I like the XF 18-55 for its wonderful colors. This last lens is weak in resolution and a Bit mushy in the corners , but wow! it’s got the most beautiful colours of any lens I’ve ever owned. Last thing: Tel Aviv is the place for photography and the Dizengof square and the beach are the places for photography in Tel Aviv! You’re clips are inspiring and heart warming. Keep up the good work, Omar!

Your candid shots are SO good! Right now my only lens is the 16/1.4 which I loooove. For family/candid portrait-y stuff would you go for the 35/1.4 next or the 56/1.2? I want something with the same kind of vibe to the image, but tighter. I ruled out the 23/1.4 because I don't think it's enough of a difference in focal length...

Can you maybe do a little like tutorial for someone moving from jpeg to Raw? Maybe what you need to do after opposed to jpeg, as in software or what you need to transfer files because I honestly found that to be a little intimidating. I wound up just converting them to jpeg because I had no idea what to do. I couldn't open the files on my Mac nor bring them to my phone. For those of us who are too embarrassed to ask anyone lol------Also, thank you for your hard work.

You bring up some very interesting points that I hadn't thought about before. I was forever a Canon shooter only because no matter what I could rely on the buttons/menus etc essentially being the same/similar, and of course once you buy into the lenses... However I am always editing my jpegs! Ugh I hate how the pics look (even from my mobile phone) because it's not how my eye sees it. Now I've bought into the Sony system (because of the color science and video), but I am still just learning the system. Like you, I like vibrant colors but I also love black and white and the graininess of traditional film b&w.

Been watching your channel for a while, but this is the first video that has really proved your photography skills! I love the pigeons and classic cars, especially. I've been shopping for a used X100, to see if I like the camera style for street photography, would you recommend going with an older one like the S or T? Trying to figure out which one has the best value to price ratio, though I'm pretty sure I'd even be happy with the original X100...

Man you’re making me wanna experiment with jpegs more! This video and the “noir camera” has made me set up my X-T100 to shoot only jpeg. Speaking of jpeg, I wish Fuji cameras let us shoot in losses formats like tiff or png. I guess that is only important if you edit jpegs, but I don’t like the idea of re-saving the jpegs and applying even more compression. I would like to have the best image quality possible for my non-raw files, I guess is what I’m saying.

Hi Omar, great Fuji video again... Hehehe Just a few questions... So what is/are your favourite film Sims, do you choose the film sim to use depending on the scene you are at? I bought my Fuji XT2 exactly because of the JPEGs SOOC, altough I always shoot RAW + Provia, CC or Acros with no tweaks I tend to just slightly edit the JPEGs (most of the times in Snapseed) and rarely use the RAW files, except if its a landscape, a long exposure or some kind of more professional photo (these are este for me) that I have the need to extract more info from the file... And I think that is the beauty of mirrorless cams and Fuji cams in particular, I find the JPEGs so great right at bat, that even in my concert photo gigs I seldom rarely use RAW files. And to get the better of those Fuji hardcore fans, I got all the Fuji Sims recipes as presets in Fuji X RAW studio hehehehe.. (Just one small edit, that I forgot) All the best for you and your family, eager to see your next video, this one has my like already 👍👍👍

I usually shoot film, I have since I started taking photos decades ago now. I've been taking a break from film and opted to go Fuji mostly for the film simulations and multiple manual focus aids outside of peaking. I've found that just by bringing over a lot of the discipline of shooting film you can get generally get the image you want right out of the camera. I picked up a used X-T30 to experiment, but I'm keeping an eye out for a good deal on a secondhand x-pro3 after holding and shooting with one for a day. I'm no stranger to pushing and pulling film while developing negatives. Also if I'm in the darkroom I use most of the tricks available when exposing prints. In the same way, I enjoy the freedom that RAW gives when it comes to post-processing. That said, I'm from the school of thought where I want to capture the shot I want with the camera, not a basic neutral exposure preserving information to then manipulate later on. That's what's great about shooting both, you get that flexibility later on if you really want it. Otherwise, just tweak the jpeg like pushing/pulling film changing a bit of contrast/saturation and you're good to go.

I do the same thing with bumping the exposure down a smidge to protect the highlights. Most of my photos these days are quick grabs on the fly (that was my travel photography life as well - no time to stop, family is on the move, take the shots you see and go). No time to get it right on the spot. Unexpected takeaway question: Does foliage have 2 or 3 syllables?

Last week I was rediscovering my X-T20 by just using the JPEGs and not touching the RAW files. (I saw somewhere that the in-camera JPEG processing is different from when you change the film simulation with Lightroom). The workflow is much simpler and faster (I could just import directly to Apple Photos). I'm curious for your next video, to know your opinion on when it is better to just re-edit the JPEG or re-edit using the RAW file.

I don't edit my jpegs because I am lazy, but ironically it takes so much more forethought to get to the same place. There is no set recipe for all kinds of light. Some light is naturally more contrasty and flatter colour, some light is dirty green and hazy, etc. The hardest light I have had to deal with is when I was living in Kyoto for a summer. The silvery haze that got trapped by the mountains was like a greasy soft box everyday. Different places on the planet have vastly different light. The sun does not shine the same on all of us. So I end up setting a general idea of a daylight recipe when I arrive to a place, and then tweak on the fly for the changes in light as they happen. ✌️

I use Fuji X RAW Studio when trying out recipes as it saves a lot of menu diving on the camera. It is the only way of matching the camera output because it uses the camera. I take a RAW and convert it to JPEG using all the recipes I have saved in Fuji X RAW Studio. Then open up the JPEGS for side-by-side comparisons. My favourite recipe gets loaded onto the camera. Fujifilm X RAW Studio is slow and clunky but every Fuji shooter using custom recipes should have it installed.

When on Fuji I just take raws since CaptureOne converts them as they would be taken in camera as jpeg. At least when I did shoot both (RAW + jpeg) and converted raw to jpeg they looked the same. And I can not decide on spot what simulation to use! Hm, maybe time to upgrade to X-S10 and roll that left dial :D
@fredbloggs545
@fredbloggs545 3 жыл бұрын
"since CaptureOne converts them as they would be taken in camera as jpeg" Close but not the same. Only Fujifilm X RAW Studio does it exactly like the camera because it uses the camera for the conversion. If you use custom recipes then C1 is no use at all as it knows nothing about your custom recipes. Fujifilm X RAW Studio allows you to use and edit your custom recipes, it is clunky, but it is the only way of truly replicating jpeg output from the camera.

Hello Omar, great video! I notice that you struggled a lit bit trying to remember the Film Simulation and the settings used when you captured the images. There is a great tool that can help you get all those details, ExifTool by Phil Harvey - exiftool.org. This little tool can give all the information that your Fujifilm camera stores on the RAF and JPEG including the Film Simulation. If you open the Fujifilm jpeg in Lightroom or Capture One, do an edit and export, some of the data will be lost! I hope you find this information useful and keep up the good work. PS: All this information was sent to you on twitter. :D

Just picked up a X-T1. And noticed while shooting in the film simulations it still shoots raw. Now that’s what I want... BUT is that universal with the more modern bodies? Are you able to shoot raw while using film simulations with say.... the X-pro 2 or 3? That being said... your images are lovely!

Doesn’t going +1 on the shadows make them darker rather than lighter? On my X-T3 that is certainly the case as I have a weird preset with +4 on both shadows and highlights for a mega contrasty look. Great video as always though :)

Yes. I might have misspoke there. By raise the shadow I meant lighten them. Sorry

My go-to explanation on JPEG/RAW is to say a jpg can go from color to black & white, but RAW can go B&W to color.

I shoot jpg and post-process as raw images. My tests show you benefit greatly. Raise the bit depth to 16 bit before editing.

Help! Hola Omar!.......I am about to buy my first lens apart from the kit (18-55). I am between 23mm and 35mm. Which one would you recommend?......I'm somewhat tangled between these two

If I were you, I’d check out the Viltrox autofocusing X-lenses as well, I have the 56 mm 1.4, and for an autofocus lens at the low price point, it’s amazing.
