Hardest part: find a floppy disk

Thanks mate! I used a c920 webcam and removed the IR filter and got this up and running in star citizen in no time.

i didn't even need to buy anything cause I just pulled apart 3 tv remotes and used the filter they have in front of the ir LEDs, and i had an old web cam

There is a DIY trick where they draw red and blue on tape to make a UV torch, do the same but with brown and violet on your webcam and you can use a plain white led instead of IR

i use flat lens version and it work very well even with cheaper IR LED Emitters (with lesser FOV). no need to open it and remove IR filter. you can install floppy film outside also.

Quick question, I found some LED's, but how much does the viewing angle matter? The one's you showed are 40 degrees, while I found 30 degree one's, and I'd assume the more the better if you want to turn your head a lot

These specific IR-LEDs are a nuisance as they are one of only a very few LEDs that use reverse polarity config - normally all LEDs have the longer leg as the anode (+). Best check polarity first with phone cam in case the IR-LEDs you buy are standard polarity.

Is there alternative for those LEDs? Can I use other type of IR LEDs?

So I just built this, camera works fine, I plugged the clip in to test yesterday and it was fine, plugged it in today and it waited a couple of seconds before making the same sound as a fly being electrocuted! Luckily I have another set of emitters and a bit of time on my hands, but can anyone say they've done this without resistors and it's still working. I'm thinking it was a short circuit, but I could be wrong.

You should 100% use the resistor. It is not to limit the voltage, an LED has a forward voltage and it will not take more but it is to limit the current. Any voltage left after the forward voltage will get dissipated as heat through the current limiting resistor and anything else connected in series loike your USB port. These LEDs have a current rating of 100mA so in series that is 300mA. Using Ohms law R = V/I so R = 0.5(the voltage drop across the resistor is total 5v minus the 3 leds)/0.3 which is 1.67Ohms resistance. That is the smallest resistance you should use (the 5 Ohm resistance you are advised to use gives you a total of 100mA). Just to give you an idea of the current if your resistance is just the wire you use, looks like very thin maybe 32 gauge at about 1 meter so roughly 0.6ohm. I = 0.5/0.6 = 0.83A. That is almost 3 times the maximum for these LEDs, plus as they get hotter from the current the current draw will change. This is ok for a USB 3.0 just about (normally 0.9A max) but USB 2.0 is only rated for 0.5A.

Hi Seytonic! Loved the vid! Was thrilled find out I didn't have to pay 150 for head-tracking. That said, I just finished putting my own frame together but am having significant problems! I mean..the frame works fine...but the PS3 Eye, even with the CL Eye software, is going undetected in games! I can see the camera working in the CL Eye Test and the opentrack software...but everywhere else (War Thunder, Star Citizen, Skype) it seems its invisible! The CL Eye website doesn't seem to be maintained very well anymore--recent forum posts are all spam. So I thought maybe it was worth asking if you're familiar with this problem and, if so, perhaps with a fix...?

I am using trackIR for many years, starting with IR4 when it came out and recently upraded to IR5... never heard of the possibiliry to DIY the sensor/camera before.. i have a nice clip now without cable and a battery/powerbank attached to it and was proud of it but yours is next level. Nice work

Just put the floppy disk film in the front of the lens and it should have the same effect. Less labor and if you want to use the camera for anything else, it's ready.

If anyone is looking for a floppy disk in 2021. Stop. Instead, go to a thrift store and find a VHS tape. They're far more abundant and the film is basically identical.

Did you try looking for a 4.7 Ohm resistor? I think they're far more common than 5 Ohm

I've done this stuff a lot...You need the right type of PS3 eye camera. If the outer lens is flat, it wont work. The IR filter is embedded between lenses. The concave/x design is good to go and you can peel off the ir filter.

hello i have almost completed the setup. Removed IR filter but couldnt find anything to block the visible light. When i start the software, it detects a lot of crazy sources apart from LEDs. Is it something because i dont have a visible light filter ?

I bought the "bad" camera thinking it was the "good" camera. I dug out what I thought was the IR filter. It is not the IR filter! Is this camera useless or will it work for this application still?

Question: I've got a PS3 Eye with the IR filter removed, but it still lets through visible light. I've got some old floppy disks that should do the trick. Do I have to open up the camera, or can I just cut out a circle and place it in front of the lens? I'd rather not mess with the insides if I can help it.

I got the led's you got and soldered them up to a usb cable but when i plug them in they slowly lose their power and with in about 20 seconds they are basically off, anybody have suggestions? I have also tried a 3x AA battery pack and it did the same thing, I've tried into the usb port on computer and using a phone charger in a wall port All though im not using a resistor, would this fix my prob? Also Soldered In-Line Are my LED's bad? I bought the ones off amazon for $8.99

Awesome video I wish I could say my head set is awesome but instead its a total shit collector. Each time I turn it on and start using it, it begins to act really jittery and does not seem to turn very consistently. I think i may have to adjust the size dimensions of the headset in open track but what is really killing me is that the lights that I am using seem to be showing up in open track and they appear 3 to 4 times the size of the example you are showing. When I am in the calibrating menu of the open track software I keep seeing it saying bad and good and it looks like the cross hairs on the led viewer keeps changing positions on the led lights. Can someone who made these mistakes lend me a hand?

With the other version of the cameras you can use a replacement lens, which you can buy online.....which is what i had to do because the correct version of the camera doesn't exist around me for some reason, CEX has them in for .25p each, Think theres still a terrible video about the nightmare I had on my channel.......

My led's turned out to be very directional, so I couldn't turn my head very far before the camera couldn't see the light...
