Re: The Mafia Kick. In a local Australian fed, we had a guy with a martial arts gimmick called BJ Blade who used the Yakuza Kick. Whenever the announcers would call it, however, either he or one of his associates would correct them, and the move would be RE-announced as 'The Legitimate Business Kick'. It was a bit that never failed to get a laugh out of me no matter how often they did it.

I took me the longest time to twig why it was called that too, if it's any consolation! Apart from anything, I associate Pelé with a lot of things but overhead/bicycle kick goals aren't particularly one of them. Mostly, though, the weird pronunciation threw me off completely. Is that a standard American way of saying Pelé's name, or something AJ mispronounced and it just stuck, or what, do we know? It's "Peh-lay". If it _was_ "Pay-lay", it would be spelled Pélé.

@@alano2475 I think we can do Swanton Bomb, anyway. It was originally billed as just a Senton Bomb (meaning a back-first impact, just like the senton splash on the mat that e.g. Kevin Owens and Samoa Joe do), but it got modified to make a nod to the particularly spectacular swan-dive action that Jeff performed it with. Just _why_ 'senton' means a back-first impact I still don't know, mind - I'm guessing it's an imported Japanese name...? Tree of woe is an especially odd but specific-sounding name I've never heard an etymology for. I'd really like to learn that one.
@btf_flotsam4782 жыл бұрын
Tree of Woe is probably a reference to "Conan the Barbarian", where the title character (played by Arnold Schwarzenegger) is crucified on the aforementioned tree. The tiger bomb was invented/popularized by the first Tiger Mask. The one I'm more curious about is the Nelson holds.

"Bulldog" is also a shortened name for the move that seems to be the only name people know anymore. The move's full name is "bulldogging headlock." Contrary to popular perception, Undertaker did not name the tombstone piledriver. The move was being used years before Taker's debut. Why that name, then? I don't know, exactly. If I had to guess, I'd say it's to state that this type of piledriver is deadlier than a standard one. "Enzui" more simply just means "back of the brain." Also, the move was invented by Antonio Inoki, which might be why it's kept a Japanese name all these years. It's worth noting that in many other countries an Irish whip is called a hammer throw.

@Somnogenesis2 жыл бұрын
@@georgedafourth Seth's finishers have form for this, don't they? Cole screaming "STOMP!!" is hardly, um, vintage stuff either. I mean, I can see why WWE might want to steer away from the real-life connotations of 'Curb Stomp' (though Edge deliberately used the full name twice in a recent promo as I write this - presumably trying to make it sound less naff), but it used to be officially known as the Blackout too at some point and that seemed perfectly acceptable. Instead, though, they seem determined to leave him as the poor guy whose finishing moves were The Knee and The Stomp. Actually, what is it about knees? Daniel Bryan's Flying Knee pretty much just got called "KNEE!!" too, even though they did try to brand it things like the Knee Plus (as in "B+ Player") at some point but apparently forgot again immediately.

@Somnogenesis2 жыл бұрын
Talking of that, I'm not embarrassed to admit that it took me several years to cotton onto the specific 'hidden' meaning in Cena's "STFU". I just thought it was quite an obvious and neat combination of STF (which is what the move is, and is indeed now known simply as) with his existing finisher the FU. ST-FU, if you like. Not being well versed in abbreviated insults, the 'true' meaning didn't occur to me. Clearly, I must have an unusually innocent mind. It also took me quite genuinely _years_ to twig that there was a really blatant innuendo in "Five Knuckle Shuffle", somehow. I mean, I was like 23 when he debuted it, I wasn't a little kid or anything, but I'd never heard the phrase used in, um, another context so it completely escaped me!
