abt the forage one, my barn/majority of the barns around my area don’t have pastures so my horse gets hay on his stable to replace it❤ (along with his alpha cubes and feed)

Thank you, Han x: Learned too much, so Bookmarked this video for ongoing review, e.g., silage in the winter is good because it creates warmth via fermentation in the horse's GI tract. I'm the kind of person who always has to know "why." Merry Christmas from the Pacific Northwest, USA :-D

As an Equestrian in New Zealand theres a few things different and things we get told are different to other places, like the feeding before a ride, its not necessarily Haylage/bailage but a Hard feed with Pellets/grain and Chaff. And Hay isnt 100% the best Nurturance for Horses or any animal, yes it can fill em up and make em feel full but prolongingly wont add Weight :) Im doing my level 4's in my Nutritionists studies, and have talked to my Teacher about that, For ponies Hay is better but for the likes of Skinny/ Underweight babies they need to eat up Fibers meaning Silage or Bailage is your bestfriend in this department
@andreabyrne6527
@andreabyrne6527 2 жыл бұрын
Most people avoid silage with horses since it can come with large health risks. Dry hay is defo the better way to go. Silage is for the cows and sheep haha ;)

@@mrs.marken4609 haha I was thinking the same. Hay does a pretty good job fattening most horses. ;)

My horses love their bran mash in the winter. I mix the bran in with their normal supplements/hard feed, and use plenty of hot water. They live outside but have a loafing shed. They are fed alfalfa and grass hay twice daily. I've never really thought it helps with digestive issues, but my three definitely love it.

The one about weekly feed isn’t entirely clear here, if your horse is not being worked much so not using up much energy they will be ok with just hay and grass. Don’t just suddenly remove all of their feed though because they might attempt to eat you

I've definitely noticed too much alfalfa without other forage fires my horse up. But she's one horse I've known others to be fine with just the alfalfa. Also if I stop bran mashing my horse with oil she will immediately colic. So I'm gonna keep doing it BUT I don't recommend it to others. She had colic surgery and for her I think the oil lubricates the scar tissue or something That said these are things I've noticed after 17 years of owning her and trying different things over the years

I would like to correct you on the baleing twine, this is made from STRONG nylon. I used to use this to until I found out about the strength it actually has. When you think how much strength it needs to keep the bale intact during handling of the bale! The tip of using twine is great but please, please, please use jute twine for your horses safety!
@mrs.marken4609
@mrs.marken4609 2 жыл бұрын
I’ve found it’s not the strength of the twine that comes into play, but rather the knot itself.

I always give my horses half a flake or so of lucern when i’m grooming + tacking up too! I get many people who tell me my horses will drop dead because of it. I thought that myth (And the water after riding one…) died years ago, but apparently not. 😅
@HanEquestrian
@HanEquestrian 2 жыл бұрын
Literally same 😅 I always used to get comments on my older videos about me feeding lucerne before a ride! I don’t know why the water one won’t die!!!
@jaylaberesford9326
@jaylaberesford9326 2 жыл бұрын
I find the water one so weird how people thought water straight after rides can cause colic because I’ve grown up in the racing industry and straight after the horses have worked or raced we would give them a big bucket of water with molasses or electrolytes and let them drink as much as they want same with my riding horses there’s definitely some funny rumours round!
@emmabaird2978
@emmabaird2978 2 жыл бұрын
People think they need to have an empty stomach to ride? That’s nuts and a recipe for ulcers! Mine always gets some kind of roughage snack as I’m grooming and tacking up. On the plus side it keeps him still 😂

I have to wholeheartedly disagree on the lucerne/alfalfa. I have had several horses who reacted to it by becoming extremely hot and skittish. My one mare turned into a homicidal maniac on a suicide mission, literally jet-propelled on the stuff. Some can handle it, some absolutely cannot.
