10 IMPORTANT IDIOMS you can use every day!
Hi Everyone!
In today's video, let's look at IDIOMS!
Idioms are groups of words that cannot be translated literally, but have a specific definition. That's what makes idioms so confusing...and fun!
Native speakers use idioms throughout their day, and in this lesson, we are going to look at 10 idioms you can add to any conversation.
CHALLENGE: In the comments below, write me a a mini conversation using 1 or 2 of these idioms. (or 10!)
Do you want more examples? Go to my blogpost!

Were you originally a Japanese speaker? Was Japanese your native language? It's the way you enunciate certain words. I don't know why but I love Foreign Language accents like German, Japanese, British, and Russian.

Yes Arnel, in Spanish we say some of those idioms too: take your time is "tómate tu tiempo "; the last straw is "la última gota que derramó el vaso"; long story short is "Para no hacer la historia larga"; thank you for all your classes, you are very important for our learning. You are beautiful and intelligent. My best regards from a Mexican who is trying to improve his English.

Some months ago, I was feeling under the weather because of my job. I had many things to do and I was neglecting my personal life. My friends and family used to tell me: “You have your work cut out for you” and take my word for it, they could say that again. I wasn’t even hitting the sack some days. To encourage myself and go on with the work, I used to say “I’ll cross that bridge when I come to it.” Long story short, I quit my job and now I am happy again.

If you feel under the weather, you’re stuck with your English, you’re trying different methods, and they don't work; don't say this is the last straw. Don’t give up. You need to watch Arnel’s lessons; I can tell you that they're very good and complete, so you can take my word for it. There are a bunch of cool lessons about tricky topics that she makes easy to get, so take a breath, and watch all of her videos; you have your work cut out for you. It’s a long way to the top, so take your time. Hi, Arnel. Thanks so much for the lesson; I really liked it. I did my best with the challenge 😂. Love ya! ❤️

Hello, my name is Felippe I am from Brazil. I'm in B2 and I usually use your classes to study. I like the way you explain the things and the speed of your English because it's easy to understand. So I would like to share my text: I was talking with my friend John and told him to take your time to finish the presentation. So my friend started to explain all points about the presentation's delay so I asked him to provide me the long story short about the delay. Finally, he told me that his mother feel under the weather, which affected him to finish the job.

( not true story hehe ) I hired a nanny and she, most of the time, have taken my word for everything I told her about my baby. and I knew she would have her work cut out for her whenever my baby mess things up in the kitchen when she feels under the weather. but I guess, the last night was the last straw for the nanny. i heard her screaming at my baby near from our house. It was driving me nuts at the moment but I tried to calm myself down a little bit. and I decided to cut her some slack! because maybe, this would be the last time treating our baby such an offensive way If I advise her the better alternative way. well, long story short, I will cross the bridge when I come to the similar situation once again ! If you think I'm generous , you can say that again ! I always need to take time to think to get the best solutions out of the troubles.

Wonderful job Arnel. The way you explained with your graphics and emotions made the topic interesting and very easy to understand. Some idioms like "Hit the sack", "You have your work cut out for you" and "Cut someone some slack" where totally new for me. Here comes my dialog: Jack Tripper: I'm so sorry Mrs. Roper. I will be 5 minutes late. Mrs. Roper: Take your time Jack. I'll hit the sack. Jack Tripper: Mr. Roper is a little bit cranky today in our appartment. Mrs. Roper: I'll take your word for it. He loves to complain about everything. Jack Tripper: Well, I understand he has his work cut out for him. Mrs. Roper: No exactly, he spends his time yelling and eating. Jack Tripper: Mrs. Roper you should cut him some slack. Mrs. Roper: Maybe for today. He's under the weather.

Hi, Arnel! Thank you, very useful idioms! Here is an example sentence to all these idioms: 1) Just a moment. I try to find more info about it. I get back to you soon. Take your time. 2) I think Prague is the most beautiful holiday destination in Europe! You can say that again. I love it too. 3) I recommend you check out the new Chinese restaurant in the city center. The lunch buffet is very delicious there. I'll take your word for it. I am going to check it out someday. 4) When I moved to my new rental flat I knew I had my work cut out for me. Putting things into the right place and cleaning was hard work and took a long time. 5) It was raining buckets and the weather was cold when I cycled back home. Then I got terrible flu, that was the last straw. 6) Our ice-hockey team lost the game 12-0. Our coach was very angry with us. Cut us some slack. We did our best but the other team was so much better. 7) The times are so uncertain. What do you think are they going to lay us all off? Well, we cross that bridge when we come to it. 8) I feel under the weather. I have to go home. 9) My friend visited very many holiday destinations during her holiday. Long story short, she said it was fun and recommended a few places to me. 10) It's so late and I am so tired. I am going to hit the sack.

Thank you very much! In spanish we have our own "the last straw". It is "La gota que derramó el vaso" which means "The drop that spilled the glass", but sometimes we say "Esa fue la última gota"/"That was the last drop" or "Esa fue la gota"/"That was the drop"

Actually, we have all of them in Spanish. The only one that doesn't have a translation is "you can say that again". It would sound strange. We will literally repeat the phrase hahaha.

Idioms are one of the most complicated aspects in the English language for me. I usually get confused. But, after your amazing lesson I felt better while learning them.

"I am feeling under the weather today. Could you please wait for my project tomorrow?" John said. "Take your time and give your self some slack" the manager replied. Then the manager went to the boss and told him, "John is sick, sir. Please wait for the project till tomorrow", and then the boss replied, "this time, I 'll take your word for it, but it is the last straw". The manager has sympathy for John and so he thought like John has his work cut out for him. When John is not well tomorrow, the manager will cross the bridge when he comes to it. John is sick right now so he might hit the hay. Long story short, the manager is really kind and helpful like I can say that again.
