As a German the "there is" vs "there are" totally confused me for a while. I thought my grammar was off. Until I noticed, that it is kind of fashionable to use it the wrong way. I'm totally on your side. I think it's silly. Same applies to "could of". It's just silly. But kids use it, because they think it's cool.

I agree with you on every point. It is not so disturbing when actors or regular people in the street make these mistakes but when newscasters do it, it annoys me no end.

What a great topic you have chosen today. I blame,on the "there is - there are" subject, only the Americans. In Ireland where I spent most of my english Language time, this is also more often used then in England. Lots of Irish are related and connected to US Americans and therefore a lot more Irish people make this mistake. Frewer - lesser is another good example. In Ireland I have heard many times people pronounce the "ladder" with a th, saying lather ?!?! - exeption here is the wrong usage of words or pronounciation in "Geordie" land or "scousers" up Liverpool way: Me and me mum!? - How is me pettle? Luve me neighbours on so on. I love these subjects and I love your videos (nearly all). Look forward to your next post. Joe

I'm not sure whether to find it funny that I didn't even know there's a difference between "less" and "fewer" because I've so rarely heard natives use "fewer" that I assumed it's an incorrectly formed comparative. It's kind of interesting to see that the apostrophe mistakes are more and more made in German as well. Probably because of often using English online, many people tend to put apostrophes where they're not supposed to be in German but very much in English (Richie's KZfaq channel would be fine; Richie's KZfaq-Kanal wouldn't).

I should of learned all that stuff much earlier, then I would of made less mistakes in the past. Also, this video is very funny and its also filmed very good. Really funny thing: I was a TA as a non-English native speaker and when I was correcting submissions of freshmen college students (in TX USA), I was ripping my hair out! Exactly those mistakes, and some run-on or incomplete sentences. If I would have written German like that in 10th grade, I would have been held back.

what drives me mad is the use of 'ask' as a noun instead of 'request'. Like in "we have received the ask from the customer". I read somewhere that this is originating from Australian slang.

What drives me mad is when people say "this house belongs to Mike and I". Would you say "this house belongs to I"?? No! Even worse: "Mike and I's house". Horror!!

I feel that there are two English words that are pronounced by a slew of English speaking people incorrectly, namely mischievous and scythe.

I never had problems with "there is, there are". But this might be because in the Nethergerman (Netherlands) dialect instead of "Es gibt" often "da ist / da sind" is used. What is a literal translation of the English term.

Some of those things are probably just bad habits. Many people actually write "without further adieu". That is really hilarious. It brightens my day every time. A lot of Americans "aks" if they want to know something. I don't get it because most people write it correctly.

Ein häufiger "Fehler" der mich im Deutschen nervt, ist der vollständige Wegfall des Futurs bei gleichzeitiger Verwendung des Passivs. Beispiel: Das bessere "du wirst morgen ausgezeichnet werden" statt lediglich ein "du wirst morgen ausgezeichnet". Die zweite Form ist zwar nicht wirklich falsch, da es in der deutschen Sprache, wie übrigens im Englischen auch, streng genommen keine echte Zukunftsform gibt (die Bildung des Futurs erfolgt quasi über Hilfsverben), dennoch ist es einfach unschön beim Passiv generell auf das Futur I zu verzichten, insbesondere dann, wenn man es trotzdem in Aktivsätzen verwendet ("ich werde morgen auszeichnen"). "Du wirst morgen ausgezeichnet und ich werde dich auszeichnen!" als Musterbeispiel für einen schwammigen Ausdruck. Im Englischen haben es die Sprecher da etwas einfacher, da hier eindeutiger zwischen "shall/will", "get" und "become" unterschieden wird. Dennoch sollte dies uns deutschen Muttersprachlern nicht als Ausrede herhalten dürfen :)

The favorite mistake I've seen you make is on the title screen of one of your recent videos. It says "German pronounciation". It's "pronunciation", of course (unless it's spelled differently in the UK than in the US). Apostrophes can mark letters left out or ownership. The way I remember its vs. it's is that his and hers don't have any apostrophe, so its doesn't either (though I've seen hers spelled with an apostrophe...)

I was scared to watch this. I do make some of these mistakes, mostly when tired or rushed, but I can proudly say I am an American that uses 'there are'. I'm dyslexic so I'm hyper aware that I will likely make mistakes, so I'm more careful. Side note: Mistakes that are linked to dyslexia, like getting mixed up p, b, and d, I didn't notice in myself until I started learning German.

95% of all ads for spare rooms in the UK -> "The room comes furnished with a bed, a table and a chest of draws." Draws? Draws what? Little poop emojis dancing on the OED? It's d-r-a-w-e-r. Omitting the apostrophe on "I'll" makes me feel so "ill" that I want to vomit. :-)

Man sollte echt überlegen, ob man nicht im Englischen den besitzanzeigenden Apostroph bei Namen (z.B. Mike's car, Diana's dress) so wie bei manchen Pronomen (yours, his, its) oder generell wie im Deutschen weglässt. Problematisch nur wenn der Name auf 's' endet (engl. und deutsch (Genitiv): Doris, Hans.... evtl Doris(es) dress/Kleid, Hans(ens) Auto oder umschreiben mit von/of: das Kleid / the dress von/of Doris, das Auto von/of....

Richie, I love linguists getting angry. The people they're there somewhere, always making stupid mistakes. I do, you do, everyone do. "Could of", I laughed so hard. It's a typical German misunderstanding. It took me a whole school year to understand that it should've been "could've". Why, in the devil's name, do you Brits abbreviate so much? It's not a contraction, it's a contraption. "There is" vs "There are": I struggled with the English "logical plural". "The police were riding in." Yes, I know, the police consists of several lads and lassies, but in German it is "die Polizei", a generic singular word. You once asked a question about difficult English words, I found one in this video: "quantifiable". How in the world could you pronounce it three times in a row? What about "countable"? I still am doing good, because I'm a social worker. But I'm doing well as well. What's your problem with "literally"? I love the German word "buchstäblich", which is the literal translation of "literally" from Latin. I understand your anger about the "it's". "Its a pint of beer." But the British do not misspell it as often as the Americans. One question from me: How do you pronounce "etc."? I've heard people say, "exetera", with an x. How do you say it? (German that I am, I say "und so weiter", or usw. for short.)

Die exzessive Benutzung des Apostrophs geht mir auch im Deutschen auf die Nerven und dort ist es noch schlimmer: "Richie's KZfaq channel" ist im Englischen korrekt, im Deutschen nicht. Falscher Genitiv - ein Fehler, den man immer öfter sieht. Und wenn jemand "Montag's" schreibt, kann ich einen Schreikrampf bekommen. Nicht nur ein falscher Genitiv, sondern eine völlig falsche Schreibweise für eine Mehrzahl.

I share your annoyance at the increasing use of "there is" when it should be "there are". I have noticed that the so-called quality newspapers in Britain are now making the same mistake in print. As you say, it came from America as did "good" for well" as in "i am good, thank you" when the correct word is "well". I notice it all on the time when listening to the radio. Presenters and journalists who have been around for many years are now using the singular where it should be plural, something they would never have done in the past. I think that the "battle" to save the plural is lost in the same way that, following America again, British people no longer have a problem with something or are facing a problem", rather they have an "issue" with getting their washing machine to work. In the recent past, they might have contacted a washing machine service department about the problem, but now, increasingly, following America, they "reach out". I am surprised you omitted "kind of" or "kinda', also imported from the US which peppers daily conversations or interviews on the media.. The veteran Observer journalist, Katharine Whitehorn died recently. A former colleague in paying tribute to her on the BBC said, "she kind of got married and went on kind of working". In referring to a specific column Whitehorn had written, the same colleague referred to it as "kind of personal and more professional". "Kind of married", "kind of working"?? As for all the other mistakes you mention, I see or hear them everyday.

You are not quite right with the German translation of "there are" and "there is". "Es gibt" is one way to translate it. Closer to the english expression would be "es sind" and "es ist" or "da ist" and "da sind". So, there is a difference between singular and plural.
