This week James and Thomas discuss the things they're sad to see disappearing in new cars. For some cars in this list, these changes represent a departure from the brand. For others, merely an evolution. What are they? Watch to find out. Safely filmed at home and in isolation.

Another feature that we're sad to lose: Visibility.
@markussuuronen9558

Yeah in 90's car you have a relatively narrow I beam in your left side, but nowadays it's huge. You can lose entire car behind it when you are entering traffic circle for example. of course it reinforces roof and chassis integrity but still, visibility has gone. Can these beams be narrower, but still safetier than 90's cars? A little puzzle to the car manufacturers.

@@dgs266 That's a pretty selfish view. You'd rather have a higher risk of running into someone in an car that could be smaller or older or even someone on a motorcycle in exchange for a minor increase in your own potential safety. Also not everyone wants to drive around in a 6000 lb shitbox with poor visibility. Not everyone wants to be on the road with people who feel it's OK to fiddle with their phone or dig through the 87 menus on their infotainment system while driving because they believe their mini-tank will keep them safe.

@panzer_TZ
@panzer_TZ 4 жыл бұрын
It really just depends on your point of view. Average Jane doesn't want heavy steering, a loud exhaust, and a bunch of wind noise. From her perspective, modern cars are way better. Also, modern cars are very reliable, it's just that there are a lot more little electronic gremlins that can go wrong. These days reliability means how many times you have to take it to the dealer because your heated seat stopped working, not because you were stranded on the side of road. If Toyota was to build a new car that had a 4-cylinder engine with no auto stop-start or cyclinder deactivation, a 6-speed transmission, manual windows, no infotainment, normal gauges, manual locks, etc the thing would probably easily last 300,000 miles with modern manufacturing techniques. Look at how reliable hybrid powertrains(especially from Toyota) are now. Finally, I'd say at least part of the issue with cost is that nowadays everyone wants pick ups and SUVs. You can get a very nicely equipped, spacious, comfortable, refined sedan brand new for under $30,000 OTD. However, everyone wants a $40,000 SUV the second they pop out a kid.

Suppose this 30000 fatalities caused by human drivers each year are a large amount, what if the self driving cars in the future somehow got hacked by terrorists and all start malfunctioning and crashing into buildings or each other, wouldn't their be more deaths? I traded my 2017 VW GTI, for a 2019 VW GTI, just so I could get the newest GTI without an electronic parking brake. I refuse to have an EPB!!!! For those who dont know the benefit of a manual parking brake, it goes as follows: If I see a cop when I’m speeding at night, I just pull up on the ebrake and the car slows without Illuminating the brake lights. Also, there is something reassuring about a mechanical “click” that is completely separate from the electrical system... Play if you have researched replacing electronica parking brake motors, you will also discovered that there is a financial benefit to not having them!!!

Great list! I have also noticed these days that the main selling points of a car are the tech rather than anything else. Some people like fuel efficiency but end up buying 2 ton SUVs. Some like practicality but like you said, the tech makes the cars annoyingly impractical. Its sad that cars are basically being converted into a movable house with all these features, rather than being actual cars. All i can see in the future is that the driving will become more reckless, hence more accidents, and eventually there will be a necessity for self driving cars. :(

Watching this video made me appreciate my Alfa Romeo Giulia. It's probably one of the rawest new cars on the market today. The technology is limited to the bare necessities, the gauge cluster is bare bones, everything is controlled by buttons, the infotainment is very stripped and simple to use, there are no gimmicky features, It has massive aluminum paddle shifters that actually work, the transmission responds instantly, the steering is the best on the market, it has incredible balance, it has it's own unique design language that dates back to the classics, and it's an unreliable Italian car. Can't get better than that! (All joking aside, it actually is not unreliable).

I still remember one day at college I drove my uncles' "old" Chevrolet Grand Vitara - 2004. Manual transmission, straight-four engine, 3-door. I know it's just another everyday car, but to this day it was one of the best driving experiences I have ever had. It felt so light, and the engine just seemed to have torque all the time... It was so easy to squeeze through traffic and dance on the road. So much fun.

I wanna add that artifical car beeps and boops everywhere in modern cars are super annoying. This feels quite dependant on the manufacturer but more often than not there are sounds for just turning the ignition on and Windows XP shutdown sounds for pulling the key out, beeps for pulling the handbrake, beeps for releasing the handbrake, immediate beeps for touching a lane line, warning beeps when just forward parking into a space and much more. That really gets old really fast if you were to own one of these offenders.

Also mechanically driven throttle. It used to be linked to the pedal with a cable. It had a more connected feel to the engine’s behavior. Now you get different driving modes, most optimized acceleration, but the connected feel is gone. Now it is simply a suggestion to the engine control module that you want to accelerate 😧

Agree about aggressive "safety" features. I can't use my cruise control because it's adaptive cruise control and the "adaptive" bit can't be turned off. Meaning, if I get within the same time zone of another vehicle, my car slams on the brakes. Same with the crash warning. My car has slammed on the brakes from 70mph because a plastic bag blew across my path. Downright dangerous.

The old turn signal clicking. The pull-out headlight knob. The 4 to 5 speed transmissions. The ability to take half the vehicle apart with a phillips screwdriver. The fact it doesn't yell at you when you don't have a seatbelt on. Crankdown windows. Cassette tape + CD player 2 in 1. Non-blinding Halogen headlights. Those minor broken things you never fix because it adds "character". I have a 2001 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 Straight 6. I love it for all these reasons and everything mentioned in the video. Not far off, But that's also the fault of the typical owner now. I'm now in my mid 40's. Back when I was a sprog, having a car was the norm. If you didn't have a car you were a nobody ! A car was a tool to adjust your adrenaline levels, Something to show off to mates, A way to display your individuality to the world, And (If you hadn't crashed, broke, or immobilised it somehow during the weekend) a way to get to work on Monday. Most of the new generation of "Drivers" are so disinterested in cars that they see them as in the same category as a dishwasher. To them a car is just another "Consumer durable" that's there to do a job. They don't care about how it works, They only resent it when it doesn't. It's colour is more important to them that it's handling. They couldn't tell you if it had ABS, PAS, or traction control, But they DO know where the iPhone USB plug goes and how many cup holders it has. A big proportion of them have all inclusive lease deals for their car so they don't have to even think about servicing, MOT's, Tax or insurance. If it needs a service, A person turns up at their home or work and does it while they're doing something else. If it get's a puncher they call someone out to fit the spare (Because they don't know how to do it, And it look "Technical"). A lot of their generation are so disinterested in cars that they never even bothered getting a driving licences. They prefer to travel by taxi because it feels more trendy, Bus because they don't know any better, Or bicycle because they're an irresponsible prick who doesn't care about or follow any rules of the road !

I think my daily driver actually works really well when comparing to your points. It is a 1012 Suzuki swift sport with a manual transmission. It set me back the equivalent of about $7000. Steering is precise and gives me feedback, aftermarket stainless exhaust (stock sounds pretty good too) makes it sound amazing, naturally aspirated and revving to 7000 rpm. Airbags for safety but no lane keep assist to get in the way when driving it. Manual hand brake. Really simple to work on for a car from this era and it is really light. It weighs in at just over 1000 kg and has 136 playful horses (probably slightly more since I have a tuned exhaust for some extra power). Great car, reliable and extremely fun to drive. Feels like an old car with the finesse of a new one and if you ever get the chance to actually drive one should you really do it

Nowadays it feels like you're a passenger even when you're in the driver's seat.
