This is the new 2021 LS 500 ($140,000 CAD 110,00 USD), and today it meets its older brother the 2009 LS460 (10,998 CAD, $8,600 USD). Both are large spacious luxury sedans, both have all-wheel drive and while the 460’s V8 pushes out 386 hp, the newer 500’s Twin-Turbo V6 has 416 hp to play with. Is the new LS 500 worth every penny? Or is the LS 460 the best value buy on the market today? Watch as Thomas and James answer this question and more! SUBSCRIBE.

As an LS owner (LS430 2004) who goes onto Lexus Forums and regularly talks with other LS/GS/LX owners the main thing I hear from them is that their appreciation for the vehicle grows over time. Main due to their highly intuitive and intelligent design. The Japanese place a great deal of importance on being conscientious, thoughtful, reliable, meticulous and understated and as a result all Lexus models embody those qualities however their 'No Expense/Effort Spared' models are even more exemplary and the LS Line being undoubtedly the most prominent example. Lexus' idea of luxury goes beyond typical or gimmicky 'luxury' features and instead is more to do with the overall driving/passenger experience focusing on Cabin architecture and design to be ergonomic, intuitive and to ensure that there are literally DOZENS of small design inclusions with the express purpose of making the experience as relaxed, luxurious and easy as possible. One little example is that in the small gap between the Driver's Seat and Centre Console they added a lip of Leather & Fabric to the side of your seat which sticks out in order to catch anything that might happen to fall down there like a coin, card, ticket, earbud, phone, etc. Ensuring that retrieval simple & easy as opposed to the hand and finger shredding nightmare it can be trying to dislodge a small item that has fallen all the way down in between the driver's seat's sharp metal tracks. The MULTITUDE of these little design inclusions aren't mentioned by Car Reviewers, they're not attention grabbing, they just for the long-term owners and it's these kind of thoughtful inclusions that end up making SUCH a big difference, and significantly elevate, your overall experience of the vehicle and brand itself. The only unfortunate part is that once you become accustomed to that level of thoughtful and attentive design it becomes much harder to be wowed by similar cars from other manufacturers. All the more when you factor in the most important feature for a Luxury vehicle, and ESPECIALLY for a luxury barge like an LS, and that's reliability. What good is a luxury feature that no longer works? There are well over 100 small electric motors plus the wiring, PCB Boards, microchips, heatsinks, switches, sensors, etc inside my 2004 LS430 powering an absolute CORNUCOPIA of Luxury features and what TRULY sets the LS apart from the S-Class, 7 Series, A8, etc in particular is that Lexus ensured that the vast majority, if not all, of those parts would still work 10-20-30+ years down the road. And they STILL do. My 2004 LS430 is regularly called the most reliable car EVER made. It tops JD Powers reliability rankings and from anectdotal (from online forums/Mechanics/etc) plus my own personal experience I can attest that mine hasn't suffered a SINGLE part failure. Of course like any car I've had to replace parts that naturally wear down over time like brakes, belts, bushes, etc, but there have been no failures. Not 1. That's an insane feat for any car but for a Luxury barge it borders on the incredible. About 8 years ago I 'inherited' this LS from my deceased father intending to keep it purely for sentimental reasons as I was driving one of the modern Alfa Spiders. Eventually I sold it because of the repeated trips to the mechanic to fix problems with it and then I began driving the LS430 just as a stop-gap until I purchased a new vehicle. That was 5 years ago. I still drive the LS430. I, unfortunately, became accustomed to it. And that's an absolute trap. And since then every time I go out to test drive a new car I inevitably compare it to the comfort, tech, safety, quietness, power, practicality, versatility, reliability and overall luxurious feel of my LS and the only vehicles that meet or exceed those standards are going to cost me $70-80k... It's just so hard to justify spending that kind of money when I've already got this LS. That said I adore convertibles, grew up riding my bicycle around so I'm fond of the freedom a droptop gives you so my current plan is to wait maybe 3-5 years until the Lexus LC500 drops a significant amount and then I'll pick up one of them. For anybody interested here is a decently informative 28 minute video on the history of the LS models: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/gJl-ZMdyqdeunnU.html

I own a 1992 SC400 which I love and will never sell. It has the same 1UZ-FE motor as the LS400. Comparitivly speaking, very true. The tire pressure warning was the earliest models indicator on the screen but you can see that warning regularly on brand new cars. Never compare a Lexus to mercedes or BMW because if you were to keep either of those on the road for the same amount of time you would have to spend THOUSANDS of dollars more just on maintenance and mechanical failures after similar mileages. Lexus wins overall cost of ownership and piece of mind while driving hands down.

I can confirm that LS460 is a great car. Had one few years back. Bought it from insurance money after crashing my infinini M. I had rear wheel drive and i had big time problem with burning the tires in it🤣 Worth every penny. My car had soft closing and weird system checking if you pay attention to the road. This parking system i didn't trust. Drive was so relaxing that when i whisper to my wife actual speed we had at the moment ,she needed to convert it to km/h and then started to panic as we were doing 266km/h effortlessly, no shaking tires noise was minimum engine didn't scream from pain. In the city it drinks but on motorway its absolutely reasonable. When filled up (100£) easily did trip from London to snowdonia and back. Biggest problem was with parking space and boot space. This is over 5m long car and very small boot. Probably due to electric back seats. Now i have Audi A8 from 2012 for few years full spec and ride quality was better in Lexus. I also had S class in the same time as LS and S class had nothing on LS. When i will change the car, im going back to lexus LS.

I just bought the exact same car. I paid 10.5k. I am loving it. I have a few problems but I've fixed most of them already. I have the "sticky dash" but I found something online to fix it. This is the most powerful car I've ever owned. To me it doesn't really drive like a luxury car. It kind of rumbles when I step on the gas. It had quite a bit of road noise too. I guess the trade off is that it hardly leans in the turns.

What, lol, theres nothing art deco about that. Thats traditional japanese styling ques meshed up in a very baroque layout. Floating elements, visually overstyled, bulky and heavy looking. Its been Merc's formula since forever. Just look at the old CL for example. Its Lexus once more getting "inspired" by those stuttgard guys they love so much but this time masking it a little better with all the small japanese motifs. Acura and Infiniti did a lot of a better job in creating a more unique and "japanese" interiors. Especially Infiniti with their slim, cascading elements like in the M or the Q45. The open space cabin as if trying to get away from the passengers and the sharp plastic highlights that cover the trim, console and other control elements are also typically japanese. But overall its the layout. Japanese houses and furniture have always been slim, weightless and very open. In a way, minimalist.
