I honestly credit this video and my eight years growing up in a dojo with me being able to make an almost-perfect large dovetail on my first attempt with 2x4 pine using my $10 Japanese pull saw and $7 chisel set from harbor freight. The bottom of the saw is thinner with more TPI and the cut side gets er did. Everything video and Sensei taught me translates, centering, balance, patience, meditation, proper alignment of limbs to torso and foot positioning along with breath and heartbeat regulation. Absolutely loved it, and thrilled to add it to my final products 💯. Great video, thank you, and SO worth it to try!!

Very nice! Im absolutely terrible with dovetails 😂 i really need to get better with them but at the same time those box joints are nice and quick for my bee hives 😂

I'm a power tool user but I don't want to limit myself to just 1 thing. Hand cut dove tails is a cool skill to have. 1 day I might give it a try. Stay awesome.

Howdy Mr. 731... Mannn. I haven't done dove tails since High School and a few times in my mother's garage (early on woodshop) using a Black and Decker dove tail jig. It isn't a very "practical" joint to use in terms of speed and "getting things done". But, for those "one off" specialty builds, like maybe a Jewelry Box, the ability to customize a dove tail would be beneficial.

I would say starting with everything square is very critical. We naturally think plumb and perpendicular. We don’t visualize calculate angles. So starting out with a level table, and a square workpiece is the best place to start! I am no expert! I have cut a couple of dovetails and a few hand cut box joints. The satisfaction you get when your done is worth the effort! Great video Matt! 👍🏼👊🏻

You see lots of Rob Cosman tools shown here. What you might not realize is that Rob has his own videos that show these methods in great detail. Lee Valley makes Veritas tools which are quite often great value for money. This was a great intro to hand cut dovetails.

Matt, if you find yourself able to financially swing it, perhaps you would consider signing up for Rob Cosman’s class. I think you’d have a good time and learn that which you may feel unable to accomplish on your own. Would be cool to see it.

$250 for a Cosman saw? I'm thinking POCKET HOLES :-) Dovetails look interesting but appear to take WAY too much time to set up, all the tooling required..and you have 3 more corners to go. Helpful video to remind me power tools are still my best friend.

@@731Woodworks It is actually more efficient at times, definitely will take hand planing over sanding everyday. Faster, no dust, finer finish. Dovetails with a router or saw and chisler🤔🫠lol

i have both, have to say the robcosman saw requires some practice while u can just start pulling the Japanese saw. But once u got some familiarity, that heavy sharp rc saw is really awesome to use
