Screen Rant thinks Star Trek Discovery is the best the franchise has to offer and they break it down to 10 reasons. I use the very same reasons to back my argument that it is the worst. This article is a prime example of the shill media at work. It also is the latest article to exemplifies Star Trek Discovery is for people who never liked Star Trek.

If Wil Wheaton had any sense, he should be kissing the creators and writers of STD for deflecting some of the fan dislike from him but that might give Wil herpes. I don't believe his health insurance will cover that. He's still paying off the surgery to lower his balls into place and they haven't completely cured his case of "cabeza en su culo." At the very least, they've struck Wesley Crusher from the top spot for most detestable and unlikeable Star Trek character -- not that STD is going to be remembered for being anything but trash in 10 years. It'll end up in the dustbin of the entertainment history of bad ideas along with the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy and NuWho Seasons 11 and 12.

The article mentions a couple times that lots of Star Trek fans like to criticize whatever happens. I will point out something that various members of the TNG cast have said at conventions: They talk about, how in the show's first season, they got lots of criticism and skepticism from fans and didn't have a lot of attendees at conventions. They then describe how that changed in the third season, with convention attendance increasing enormously and fans being very happy. What happened in the third season? The show got really good! I think CBS needs to remember that little detail going forward.

Who are the "showrunners?" This so-called "author" reuses that word many times, but no names are mentioned. Like Gary points out, almost no evidence is cited. Captain Pike was featured in exactly 3 (three) episodes of Star Trek. One was a pilot which was not shown, but was chopped up and used in a 1st season 2-parter called "Menagerie." In the 2-parter, the current-day Pike beeps and boops rather than talks. Captain Pike is HARDLY the character to use to "call back" to previous iterations of the show. Harcourt Fenton (Harry) Mudd would have made more sense. This is a "C-" paper for a 7th grade essay. Atrocious.

Hurray, you found one ... I like all Trek series including Dicovery. Why? Because I really don't think of Trek as an Religion or a big Universe that's meant to be logical and interconnected. It doesn't neet to bee like the previous shows at all and if you like the idea of timelines then place it where it belongs and everything is OK, the Picard Federation is a few hundred years away so why should Discovery have to care about how they would have done things? That's the same with Archer, I think the haters never understood that there where severl hundred years in between. If Discovery was chronologically placed after TNG that would be another story but in this case I don't see any problem. Compared to other Series I must damit I like it more than DS9 because I always found DS9 a bit "boring". I loved TNG and TOS but if we talk about acting, there was pretty bad acting in these shows as well. Discovery is not the best show of course but I think it is a good one if you aren't a hardcore Trekie ...

I am a 50 year Star Trek fan and I love Discovery. But they DO make some bad writing choices time to time (Tilly rushing to the command chair). ALL the other series made bad writing choices from time to time. Even DS9 (season one Bashir). But most of the arguments I read against DSC come from folks who never understood, or simply ignored, the SJW franchise that Trek always has been. It just seems subtler in TNG and TOS because THOSE social issues aren't really issues any longer! If one hates the social themes in Discovery, it must be the obvious feminism, racial equity and LGBT themes, and only the last one actually is still in the contentious issues category. But basically they can just suck it up, those Neanderthals. These won't be issues in twenty years either.

What I find interesting across comments on a number of videos, is that most who dislike STD also dislike DS9 and merely "tolerate" Voyager. They also seem to excuse the faults and flaws of STE, TOS, TNG and to a lesser extent Picard. There may be some identifiable trend or connection between the series which are most disliked / decried as not "REAL TREK"...

I don't know if you actually read the replies, but it seems every time I listen to one of your reviews it is spot on! Disappointment is an understatement when describing STD IMO. One thing I have noticed as this travesty of a show continues is there is no chemistry or caring about the characters. If they flushed Burnham out of an airlock I would see it as an improvement to the show. I was more saddened by a generic crewman on The Orville being cast out of an airlock over anyone on STD. This show is so bad I find myself dozing off during the show and then rewinding some of it to see if I missed anything other than lens flares. So why do I still watch it I am asked? The answer is I am hoping it will come to a point of explaining this garbage for a show and tie into Star Trek. They tried with the Pike /Cage opening but that really was just lame. So far CBS has not earned their pay showing this crap but I am hopeful one day Star Trek will come back, (to quote the original Doctor (Who) "yes I shall come back. Until then, there must be no regrets, no tears, no anxieties. Just go forward in all your beliefs and prove to me that I am not mistaken in mine.” I look forward to when (or if) Star Trek comes back.

"They should be grateful that some of us still care enough about Star Trek to criticize it, to try to make it better. Listen CBS, the people you are coming after are they people you depend on. We subscribe to your streaming services, we buy your DVDs and Blurays and action figures, we fill you convention halls. DO NOT FUCK WITH US." Jesus, Gary. That was one of the most succinct summaries of the STD/CBS situation I´ve heard. Bravo, Sir.

I think the Orville takes all the good things from star trek and sprinkles in today's cultural changes to add flavor. It's not in your face but instead gives the show a unique flavor that keeps you coming back for another bite

@@Alienshade It is actually quite a racist themed joke. Americans like to joke that after eating Chinese food, 2 hours later you will be hungry again.

lance ripplinger: Actually a 6th grade should never be allowed to see this show because of the violence, harsh language, and homosexuality. Now here is the kicker, if parents aren’t letting their children see this show, who are they making the toys for?

It’s a pity what they did with Star Trek discover. I will never consider Star Trek Discovery as part of Star Trek universe. Never. As you said, it’s a hopeless universe filled with unlikeable characters and a character - Michael Burnham- who seems to be the philosophical stone of everything. The violence, torture and sexual levels of this show are not typical from Star Trek universe, and if you need to add all these things to your script, in a show like this, probably the reason is that you don’t have a good story. Star Trek fans don’t need a visual spectacle, great CGI or FX or big levels of violence and sex. We only want a good story with beloved characters and hope in the universe. Is it so difficult to write?

The writers and actors don't understand what makes a story a "Startrek" story. You don't continually ignore commands, you don't go off on your own to do what you want, you don't berate all the crew around you, you don't become a lovable character or one that fans will miss if killed, you become one they want killed off. Rootin for the Klingons (or whatever they've become, under that new exterior).

Past trek shows, while the captain was always the main character, the solutions to the plot's problem were always in a different person. It felt like everyone contributed equally. Discovery it's all about Michael, she finds out what the problem is, which nobody was aware of, she finds the solution, she executes the solution, usually "sacrificing" herself in some way only to find a solution to that sacrifice too (against orders of course because she's such a rebel).

My problem with STD is that it has no structure. What is it all about? Its a big confusing soap opera without any adventure elements. Battles, esoteric mumbo jumbo, pointless videogame camera work, a thousand things stuffed in meaningless sequences, characters that all need a therapy …
