Shaq "The Greatest Center in NBA History" O'Neal had 34 20/20 games in his career. Wilt had 73- in one season. In fact, Wilt had 12 seasons with more than 34 20/20 games, and had over 600 such games during his career (and at least 75 more in playoff games). The completely forgotten Bob Pettit is the only other player with over 200 20/20 games. Bill Russell had 194, and Elgin ("Who?") Baylor also had over 150. Shaq had 722 double-doubles, a commendable 60% of all of his reguar season games. Wilt had over 900 (in 200 fewer games), well over 90% of all his games- and don;t forget, he basically stopped scoring his last two seasons. His first ten years, over 98% of his games were double doubles. His first eight years (788 games), the only games he didn't double double in were three games in which he either got sick or was ejected and one in which he didn't take a shot from the field. Only nine other players had over 100 total (not including playoffs) 20/20 games. Wilt had 126 30/30 games (175 including playoffs). He had more than twice as many 40/30 games than (72) Shaq had 20/20 games. Including playoff games, Wilt had as many 50/30 games as Shaq had 20/20 games. Of players that (most) readers will be familiar with, Karl Malone had 12 20/20 games, David Robinson 13 ,Kevin Love 17, Patrick Ewing 19 and Hakeem had an imprssive 42 (again, Wilt had seven season with more than that, but 42 is not bad). Wilt had eight 40/40 games and 130 games in which he scored 50 or more with at least 20 rebounds. He has over 500 games with at least 20 rbounds and 30 points. There is Wilt, and then there is no one even close.

Ralph Sampson could not do that. in the 1961-62 season when Wilt averaged 50 and 25, he played 48.5 minutes per game for 80 games. Ralph Sampson could not do this nor can anyone else.
@david.tousignant207 жыл бұрын
C Howard 600 pounds? Where do you get that? Also, don't forget when Wilt Chamberlain averaged 48.5 minutes per game, many 60s players were able to stay 42-43-44 minutes per night for a whole season on the court. So, comparing 60s to 80s is inaccurate.

Wilt was the best physically, but Russell was the best intellectually. He absolutely psyched out his opponents by knowing their moves (he studied film on all of his opponents to know their moves) and he'd talk to them like a kind father. One example was against the great 6-11 Walt Bellamy. He'd stick to Bellamy like glue and then ask him why his teammates weren't getting him the ball. Physically, Bill was way underrated. Both he and Wilt were high jumpers but Bill was a better one, being rated #3 in the US and #7 in the World. Both ran the 400 meters and Bill ran the hurdles and relays as did Wilt. Both could touch the top of the backboard. In Bill's final college game, the NCAA title game vs. Iowa, he had 27 pts, 26 rebounds, 20 blocked shots, 3 steals and an assist.

Alright now, I'm gonna bolster your argument with a point I've never heard anyone bring up, and it's based on illustrating how time may fly but is NOT the ancient history many young fans think, with no relevance to today. So here we go, let's remove the cloak of confusion in terms of eras.. ok so the old guy from the 80's up to the 90s, named Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who was still good enough to dominate and win an MVP during the Magic/Bird/early Jordan era, he and Johnson fueling the Showtime Lakers , he was obviously a great player in the 80s, but what many forget is how unbelievably good ,mercilessly dominant and even better young Kareem was with the Bucks in the early 70s. So imagine that bald guy you saw in the 80s winning all those titles , only a LOT more dominant..., then realize that that young Milwaukee Buck, who was eating the entire league alive in a way that bordered on embarrassing, got to play against Wilt for a few years, and believe me, Kareem handed it to Wilt on offense, but now there's a factor no one brings. Wilt obviously gave Kareem more than he could handle as well, but he was already well into his decline when he first played against young Lew Alcindor, he'd already had knee surgeries that left him no where near the athletic big man who dominated the game from the late 50s to late 60s, add to that the debauched lifestyle and lack of modern sports medicine, in other words, Kareem didn't play Wilt at the top of his game, not even close. So that great player Kareem who as an older man was able to kick some serious ass in the Bird/Doctor/Magic and even Jordan era, when he was even better in the early 70s, couldn't deal very well with an old injured, now non-athletic Chamberlain. Wilt was blocking huge number of shots against those Bucks teams, pulling down 20 rebounds a game against Kareem. I rest our case

I know I’m a year behind here but great video. WIlt was the most dominant player ever. He played 3 different roles on teams all at an elite level. People trash his competition but there were only 8 teams so only the top 90-120 players of his time made it to the league. Today the top 360 - 450 players make the league. He was 75% more likely to face his era’s best every night than today’s player is. And people say players back then were not as good which is bullshit. The hoop was 10 feet from the ground just like it is now. If anything rules were harder on traveling, goaltending, and assists were harder to get credit for. Sure the average player is more athletic now but the modern player has training and nutrition the 60s player didn’t have.

Who are you sugar coating it for?? He wasn't one of the greatest rebounder if he was the greatest rebounder...Get it?? why diminish his accomplishments like that? He wasn't one of the greatest scorers or one of the most dominant players. He was THE GREATEST SCORER, THE MOST DOMINANT PLAYER, and it's okay for you to say it, because it's factually true. Grow a pair with your conviction!
@herbertgearing17026 жыл бұрын
For all of the people who insist Michael Jordan was better. I would like to pose a question or two. Did Jordan (a guard) ever lead the league in assists? Because 7'1" center Wilt Chamberlain did! Jordan was a great scorer, a talented defender, one of the most competitive players ever. When Chamberlain wanted to score he dropped 100 in a game, and average 50 for a season. Did Jordan ever do that? He was also an imposing, intimidating defender, a dominant rebounder, and had pretty fantastic passing skills for a big center. If he had played in the day of the 24 hour sports network I think more people would know that he is the Goat, a once in a lifetime talent, and it isn't even close! I think his dominance is so shocking to young fans that they wrongly assume his competition must have been weak since no one could be that good. It's a logical thing to think, it just happens to be dead wrong.

In 1984 Dan Marino had 48 touchdowns..in second place Dave Krieg had 32. Most starting NFL QBs had 14 to 19. In 1927 Babe Ruth led the American League with 60 homeruns. Tony Lazzeri was THIRD in the American League WITH 18 (!). Yes 60 for first place and 18 for third place. In 1962 Wilt averaged 50 points a game. He was special and I have not seen skills like his since. I was there. Currents centers STINK.
@jamesbridgewater91957 жыл бұрын
shigsho- good points & the thing is, it was not a fluke or an aberation. He ave 44.8ppg the following year and I think around 38 the next year. As a rookie he averaged 38pts. 27rbs. He was ROY & MVP. Had he not adjusted his game to become a more complete player in order to win a championships, he most likely could/would have averaged AT LEAST 35ppg probably more for his career.
@firstlast99167 жыл бұрын
Wrong. Deandre Jordan would have scored 50 per game in 1962. All you had to do to average 50 ppg back then was to be an athletic 7 footer. Andre Drummond, Dwight howard, etc.. all would have averaged 50 ppg. I think that shaq would have averaged 80 ppg back then. 300 lb, 7 footers were literally like having a different species playing on the court back in the 1960s. You cant beat a dolphin at swimming, you cant beat a cheetah at running, and you cant beat wilt chamberlain in the paint in the 1960s. Nowadays you can hire some slow uncoordinated 300 pound centers to slow shaq down. But back then, there were no 300 pound centers to hold chamberlain back. It wasn't even fair. " With 72 records (68 of which he holds by himself), Wilt Chamberlain dominates the NBA record book. And he's not just the top guy on the lists below. In several cases, he's No. 1, 2 and 3. It's hard to believe that there will ever be another player who can dominate as many statistical categories as the Big Dipper did." Jordan doesn't come close to Wilt in most of important records. Go to the link and read the stats. For example, he has by far the most 50 point games. This link shows that Wilt had 118 games where he scored 50 or more points. Second on the all time list is Michael Jordan, who did it 34 times. That's a massive gap. Clearly Wilt was the greatest scorer ever. www.basketball-reference.com/leaders/50-point-game-most-times.html

Awesome vid JW ! Wilt was unstoppable....period. He did exactly what he wanted to on the court. Every player has goals coming into the NBA but Wilt gets $hit for that same thing. "He just wanted to bolster his ow stats".....R U F'n kidding me??? EVERY player wants to do that , even if team oriented. Most just CAN'T. If Wilt wanted something he GOT it. He was asked to stop scoring at such a high level & let others take the role....& he DID. To me , Wilt's only short coming is ( besides FT's) , is he took easy on people so not to hurt them. WIlt was a finesse player. Think about that , THE strongest man to ever play sports was a finesses player! I think the only time he used his bulk was to back guys down in the paint. He would simply bend over , to make the guy guarding him back up a few feet & then Wilt would leap & Dunk. From when Wilt 1st started playing , anytime he went up for a shot , he threw his arms up in there , as to say ," i didnt hit/hurt 'em".... You can see it many Vid's from the ((Wilt Chamberlain Archive channel))! Simply put , that was because he was black. & in the late 50's threw the 60's , that WAS a problem. Altho Wilt took people as individuals , he COULD have looked at it another way , ya know. And thru THAT process , Wilt became a finesse player as he matured. Racism itself held Wilt back. If Wilt had the attitude of a Charles Barkley , i truly believe that Wilt's name in the record books would be even more prominent...STILL!

@baselinejordan17446 жыл бұрын
gerard bain a big reason for that is cuz his numbers significantly decline in the playoffs and then even more in the finals
@jaranarm6 жыл бұрын
His decline in numbers in the playoffs is actually very misleading. Wilt did not need to put up great stats if he didn't need to, but did when necessary. He played in nine Game 7s and in those games he averaged 24.4 points, 26.6 rebounds, and shot .626 from the field. In the series ending games in the Finals he averaged 23.3 points, 26.0 rebounds, and shot .658 from the field. There is no other player in NBA history with these kinds of performances. In the most important games he took less but smarter shots, increased his rebounding, and upped his defense. You won't know this by simply comparing stats. Wilt played in 35 "must-win" playoff games where he went 24-11 in them while averaging 27.0 points and 26.1 rebounds. Wilt was one of the greatest playoff performers of all time!

I agree. Wilt Chamberlain is the greatest basketball player of all-time. Excellent analysis of the the impact "The Big Dipper" had on the game of basketball. Wilt Chamberlain dominated the NBA like Babe Ruth dominated MLB and Jim Brown dominated the NFL. No matter how many of Ruth's and Brown's records have be broken, few - if any - historians and/or fans place anyone above them on their all-time lists. Chamberlain deserves his spot on the mythical sports Mr. Rushmore with Jim Brown and Muhammad Ali.
@wmden12 жыл бұрын
I haven't watched this video yet, that I remember. Wilt Chamberlain did many fantastic things on the basketball court that nobody else could do. Nobody has even come close to the matching his over all offensive and defensive statistics, from his first 6 years in the NBA, in any era. He did all of that while appearing to be on cruise control. He was an absolute phenomenon, and was almost bigger than the game. If he had played with the intensity that a lot of players played with, he probably would have caused some severe, career ending injuries to other players, by accident. It would have also been a possibility of him destroying the league, or at least owning it.

I find that when looking for the GOAT, too much emphasis is put on championships. As great as certain players are, basketball is a team game and, as such, the superstar can only do so much if he's playing with four schmucks. Charles Barkley was a perfect example of this. Utah had two great players in John Stockton and Karl Malone and couldn't win a championship. This is why championships, although important, shouldn't be emphasized as much as often are when determining the GOAT. This is why Wilt Chamberlain deserves more respect in regards to this issue. He put up monster numbers some seasons and because he played with a bunch of hacks couldn't win a championship during those years. How is this his fault? So, why penalize him from being more strongly considered as the GOAT?!

2 titles, and went up against the best team ever assembled multiple times

I would choose Oscar Robertson, but Wilt was my favorite, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who puts him first

No triple-double is as impressive as Wilt's single-triple.

boi I've been thinking Wilt was the GOAT since 13. It is kinda weird tho, a lot of 13 year olds put LeBron or Jordan at GOAT. But it should be normal to think he's the GOAT, he is.

Using the KISS philosophy, Wilt Chamberlain has the highest regular season AND post-season TPA (e.g., Total Production Average) in NBA history. The TPA is a combination of points, rebounds, and assists. The Big Dipper is the only player to have a regular and post-season TPA of 50 or more. Wilt's regular season TPA is 57.4 and his post-season TPA is 51.2. In terms of team accomplishments, one could argue that Wilt's 2 title teams are 2 of the top 5 teams in NBA history. His 1966-67 Sixers squad was 46-4 in their first 50 games, set a then record regular season mark of 68-13, and was 11-4 in the playoffs. His 1971-72 Lakers squad set a professional sports record with 33 consecutive wins, set a then record regular season mark of 69-13, and was 12-3 in the playoffs.

Wilt chamberlain like Michael Jordan was divinely fulfilling his earthly journey. Whenever you see men like this who had short family members, MJ's brothers were 5'4" and 5'5", his mom and dad under 5'10" while Wilt's family was about the same, you know you're seeing something special. Plus both Wilt and Jordan were super strong while being slim players at first.

Wilt Chamberlain, most 50 point games = 118. Most 40 point games 271. Most 30 point games 515. As MC Hammer sang, "Can't touch this."

I love Wilt and I think you are right he is the greatest of all time. I put Larry Bird a close 2nd his skillset all around game and basketball IQ are unparalled in my opinion.Magic is not far behind in this regard. I think that there a 3 other players that you can make a case for greatest player ever. In addition to Wilt Larry and Magic. I'll take Kareem, MJ and LeBron (not necessarily in that order).You have a legitimate argument with any of these 6 Just my humble opinion

mj is better then bird

Please elaborate. Bird is a better shooter, better passer and better rebounder & has the highest basketball IQ I have ever seen. Did you watch Bird play? If you did you would recognize that he easily could have averaged 30 ppg. Do you know how many players finished their career with at least 24 points 10 rebounds and 6 assists? Look it up. AND his stats were diminished due to injuries sustained late in his career.
