Corgis of both breeds ARE middle sized dogs. They have the weight of middle size dogs. They just have been bred with short legs, so they could easily duck when cattle would kick at them.

I got my corgi for free because it was surrendered at a veterinary clinic because of how much the surgery costed they forfeited the dog and my fiancé was able to get it and now Olive is so happy and loves her new best friends. The best dog I ever owned was Australian Shepard/ blue healer. But Olive, my corgi is definitely second place forever. A very cute soul

Bud Man I adopted my little corgi mix for $45 and donated my extra money to the rescue shelter i got her at. They fixed her and got me my first vet appointment for free and bought a bed, blanket, some toys, and other things for her to get her settled in to my home last year.

There are several Corgi Rescues out there. I've taken in 3 over the years from my local rescue.

My family used to have a corgi mix, the other half was dachshund. Beautiful dog but very, very protective of his "herd." Strong and stubborn as well, broke a chain leash going after a rabbit scent, pulled the leash stake out of the ground to go after a much larger dog. He made it to almost 18 years. I still miss him decades later.

@yo JM It depends on the breed. General rule of thumb is the bigger the dog, the shorter the life. It's rare for Irish Wolfhounds and Great Danes to make it past 10. My grandmother's ankle biter may have surpassed 18. Sadly, a lot of purebred dogs have congenital problems that are shortening their lifespan. For dachshunds, neck issues are real problem, for shepherds and retrievers, it's hip issues.

They're freaking great. Awesome personalities. They are stubborn, but if you're not the type of person that needs to dominate your pets, it doesn't matter. I would actually recommend them to people who really love dogs, and are willing to accept a strong dog personality.

Edwina Godwin I just lost a 15 yr old Pomeranian in July she suffered a stroke, such a sad few days but we were able to let her go with dignity. Puggie is 12 and my other Pom is 10.5 yrs. I put my name on several different breeders wait lists with "resumes" lol. I thought it would be 1-2 years and I got a call right away and an hours drive from my house which I did not expect. Pearl is a wonderful addition to our family. She has bonded with our old Pug they play and sleep together. You're never an empty nester when you have fur kids ♥

@@jamilahrazzaq8780 Stairs can be a problem for a Corgi `.They have long bodies and can develop spinal problems.They should not be living in an upstairs apartment where they have to climb 2 or more flights of stairs!

I'm an introvert with anxiety issues who owns a corgi, so i think number 13 is a plus side of that. I wouldn't be facing parts of those fears if it weren't for my little guy. Who constantly teaches me to be with the moment. Luckily, he draws most of the attention anyways, or creates a topic for me to chat with people about.

Definitely do your research before deciding on a dog breed. There are often facebook groups for specific dog breeds you can join and ask members questions about the breed before you make your decision as well as the more traditional sources of information. Regardless of breed be prepared for the monthly costs of your dog to exceed what you expect too. If you can just about afford a dog, don't do it! My greyhound has cost much more than we initially expected, we budgeted for pet insurance, food, dental, and some treats. Things like leads and collars need replacing over time in my experience sooner than you think, accidents happen at the worst possible times incurring emergency vets bills, nails may need trimming professionally if you can't do it at home for whatever reason, medication can be an expensive ongoing cost, doggy daycare if your dog isn't suited to being alone and dog walkers if you work etc all add up! We spend thousands of pounds per year on our young dog and that's with us trying our best to be frugal whilst providing whats best for him. It's also worth mentioning a dog can defy breed expectations, our greyhound isn't lazy, low maintenance or quiet despite that being the standard for the breed, many are but ours isn't. With a puppy you can't know what your dog is going to grow up to be like in terms of temperament and exercise needs so it's a bit of a gamble but even rescue dogs can end up completely different to their profiles if the rescue group only has experience of the dog in kennels instead of a foster home. I love owning a dog and will continue to do so in the future but boy is it much more stressful and expensive than I expected even after five years of research into the breed I ended up choosing.

Much like any dog, corgis do have a stereotypical temperament, but there's always exceptions to the rules. I wanted a corgi, but I found myself a smaller, non AKC-certified male from a ranch that was 2 years old, rather quiet and submissive for the breed, and got lucky. If you're good at judging behavior of dogs, you can always choose a less excitable version of what you want. And even then, I had to be good at training him and teaching him what was okay and not. He learned quick at the beginning, but then got bad habits as he got old. Much like any breed, you have to decide if you're up for a more independent dog, and then make sure you persevere and be a good owner. Basically corgis are not a good first dog, but if you want a dog in the middle of difficulty, they are a good spot. I went from Slinky to getting a Shiba Inu, who are some of the more aloof dogs you can get. Just make sure you do your homework before you make your decision.

As a recent corgi owner (only had him for a month) my opinion is that if you have not yet had a dog that you spent a lot of time successfully training, don't seek out a corgi. They are hard to train. I work on obedience training with my boy at least an hour every day. And I've never had a dog and it is difficult. We didn't go to a breeder we just found him at a shelter so some of the breed characteristics were a surprise for me lol... It's odd with training because mine is very smart and learns what you want him to do FAST. But then he sits and stares at me thinking whether or not it's worth it to him in that moment to do it lmao. He really wants everything to be on his terms. Takes a LOT of repetition
