Everyone knows how important it is to be sociable and be able to find necessary words to say exactly what you want to say. But there are situations when, even after making every effort to somehow find the essential words, this cannot be done. This is due to the fact that there are simply no analogues for them. This is mostly because of the culture and mentality of the people. So today I want to present to you 10 Russian words that don’t have the exact analogues in English.

То, что мало кто замечает в похожих списках, так как это даже не существительное, и хоть и глагол, но чаще используется во фразах, это "не доводилось", что к сожалению, можно сказать лишь как "never had a chancе" или "never experienced". Берите на заметку

Your explanation is actually very good and it is very useful to know these words. You have REALLY good skills for teaching. Thanks for that! Though I would say the nuances of these words are not so big as to claim they have not a similar word or expression in English. All my Russian friends claim that often because that's what they are taught to think. I mean, if you take literally the correspondent words-expressions in English, yes, they are not exactly the same. But such English words are not meant literally... so in their actual subjective use they really mean the same thing. Actually this is one of the main differences btw Russian and English or Spanish, for in Russian everything is very subtle but totally literal, whilst in English or others the meanings are more subjective and language works a lot by "tacit" meaning. That's why my translator friends have to fill a whole page in Russian to translate from English a paragraph (in Russian every single detail has to be explained explicitly). Besides, I think for the word Toska there are actually a LOT of English words for that, though the average knowledge of English of most non-English speakers is very reduced (even if they think they are hyper fluent). I think it happens something similar in Portugal with the word Saudade (I'm not saying Toska is Saudade). Portuguese people are very proud that there is not a translation for that word, but there are actually many accurate words in English or other languages for that. BUT Portuguese people associate the feeling of "Saudade" with a very national feeling, so telling them that there are accurate foreign words for Saudade is almost like insulting their patriotism. And, for instance, in my hands I have tattooed the words "душа" and "дух", and well, all Russians whom I come across always tell me there is no translation in other languages for "дух", because they think in other languages we use "spirit" only in the "spiritual-soul" sense, but we use "spirit" too in many other senses similar to those in Russia. But I guess they identify so much that word with "русский дух" that is very hard to convince them otherwise.

I see what you mean! Portuguese and Russians are pretty similar in their way of thinking I guess 😄 Yes, I think you’re right. If we think carefully, it’s actually possible to find these words. But anyway I find this topic interesting in all the languages I learn ☺️

You are a brave person, Alina! You dare to teach one of the most difficult european languages to your students. As a native speaker I am fully aware of this fact. These are my points - a lot of exceptions, cases. I do not even mention idioms and phrases like "да нет, пожалуй".

That may be so, but what's the point of this "lesson"? You may just as well say there's no distinction between the words "probability" and "likelihood" or "loneliness" and "solitude" in Russian. And, by the way, how do I say "(to) double click" in Russian? "Щёлкнуть два раза с коротким перерывом", не так ли🤔

Great video, added a few new words to my flash cards, thanks! Hopefully you dont mind another English tip. While the word "analog" works, as a native I would likely use "counterpart" or "equivalent" in this context

My interpretations are 1. стуки- day and night 2. кипяток- gurgling water 3.тоска- anguish, misery, desperation, hopelessness 4.сушняк- I'm dry. 5. почемутка- inquisitive 6.успебать- time rich 7. отличник- brightest student, хорошист - moral student, троечник- mediocre student, двоечник- unmotivated student 8. молодец- outstanding work 9. заодно- to kill two birds with one stone ( I'm not in this phrase) 10. подбъезд- reception place of the apartment. 2. Not only gurgling, hot water after boiling (like about 90+°C) is also кипяток. It's the water you can use to make tea, coffee, instant noodles, or other similar things. 3. That's synonyms, but not strictly same. It has nothing about hopelessness (that's безнадёга). Тоска is just lowest point of sadness, also it can mean missing someone badly. (Я тоскую по родным.) 8. Молодец is about person, not work. It's something like “good boy” but for humans, not dogs. (One can use it for dogs, but it has not such connotation.)

кипеть literally means to boil. so it is just a noun made out of a verb.

Спасибо, Лина!! Знаете, у нас в финском такие же случаи. Сутки = vuorokausi, успеть = ehtiä, заодно = samalla kertaa и даже TUSKA, которое пришло из русского слова тоска.

In Arabic (Egyptian dialect ) we have an expression that have the same meaning as заодно it's (بالمرة)

You have it literally vice versa in schools than we have in Czech schools where 1 is the best and 5 is the worst. 😀 in Czech it's like 1 - excellent 2 - praiseworthy 3 - still good enouth 4 - acceptable 5 - not acceptable and we have similar names for people who have these marks, but it's exactly vice versa - jedničkář is a person who is always the best etc.. 😀

We may not have a single word for "24 hours," be we can still express that exact meaning easily. In a similar sense, Russian doesn't have a single word for fortnight, right? "Boiling water" or "scalding hot water" is also easy enough to express. The way you describe сушняк as being "thirsty but a noun instead of an adjective," isn't that just "thirst"? though if you always say it in terms of having it, isn't it better to just have the adjective "thirsty" or "parched" anyway? We also technically have the word "parchedness," though I can't say it ever really gets used. For the grade-related terms, they seem directly analogous to D-student, C-student, B-student, and A-student or "straight A student." молодец seems to be an idiom, where the literal meaning doesn't match the actual meaning, so naturally it won't have perfect equivalents in other languages, but they will still be able to translate the literal and actual meanings with different terms. подъезд is a funny example, because it sounds like we can translate it perfectly given context, the problem is just that it's used for too many different things. It's like saying that the word "go" doesn't exist in Russian, because it only has potential translations that are all more specific.

Yes, of course the point of the video was to share words that don’t have the exact single words-translations. It’s like in Russian we don’t have a single word for “grandparents”, so we say бабушка и дедушка. It’s perfect, but it’s not one word. You have perfect examples for students, I couldn’t think of those! The rest is also nice, thank you for your examples 😊

"Thirst" describes a strong desire to drink, to get some water and quench thirst. While "сушняк" is rather a statement of the fact that the mouth and throat are dry as in the desert. "Сушняк" is the reason WHY you want to quench your thirst. That's why the words "thirsty" or "parched" don't seem to us the perfect fit for this sense. And I think it's also worth to mention, that this word is a bit slangy :) And exactly is used to describe your thirst caused by a hangover 😅

That's a good point. Actually, there are a lot of words in English we can't translate with a single word in Russian. And not only in Russian. English is such a convenient language where you can say what you mean in a very short way. However, in the other languages, you have to elaborate. So, we at my work had translations of the web page in French, German and Portuguese - and it always took much more place than English. Still. As Lina said. Someone may hope for the existence of a translation of a familiar word into English, and it is useful for him to know that not all words have a literal translation.

Similar to подъезд, there are plenty more examples where Russian is less specific than in English (or most other languages), like how it uses the same word for arm and hand, and for pen and handle. I even just recently noticed that "take the stairs on the second floor" and "take the stairs to the second floor" would be translated the same in Russian (на второй этаж).

Нет, мы всегда говорим «лифт» 😊 Да, конечно есть! Странный - это weird, strange. А чужой - это foreign, stranger, outsider.

I used the word “analog” to define the exact translation of a word. So we have analogs in different languages. And synonym is just a similar word in one language: маленький, мелкий, крошечный. So I can’t say that the synonym of маленький is “small”. It’s the definition or analog.

Всегда нужно смотреть в контексте. Все эти слова синонимы, и в зависимости от «степени» или «уровня» грусти мы будем использовать то или иное слово 😊

@@user-gj8bdСлово "conscience" это "сознательность" . Например , партийная сознательность = "party conscience" . Осознание себя частью сословия рабовладельцев = "slaveholder coscience" . И так далее . Никакого отношения к "совести" это английское слово не имеет .

@@maystre6239 то, что у этого слова есть перевод "сознательность" не доказывает, что у него нет других значений) И слово "совесть" переводится именно так. conscience - the part of you that judges how moral your own actions are and makes you feel guilty about bad things that you have done or things you feel responsible for. Вопрос с понятием "совести" в английском языке - мутный , и завязан на разницу в конфессиях . Например , у католиков и кальвинистов "совесть" отсутствует напрочь . У протестантов с этим гораздо лучше , но протестанты в Англии хотя и являются формально государственной религией , но фактически правящей идологией является католицизм ( хотя это всячески скрывается , чтобы не вызвать бунт протестантского населения против засилья католиков в правительстве и парламенте ) . Поэтому правящие в Британии иезуиты изо всех сил делают вид , будто они англикане , хотя на самом деле они являются именно иезуитами ( то есть , "совесть" у них отсутствует напрочь ) . А большинство населения , хотя и является протестантским , но подвергается упорному промыванию мозгов в духе вытравления всякой "совести" из населения . Но делается это так , чтобы протестантское большинство не осознавало происходящего , и не устроило новую Гражданскую Войну ( как в 17 века , когда королю-католику отрубили бошку за то , что навязывал иезуитские порядки в Англии ) .

@@maystre6239 вы сейчас пытаетесь слову навязать какой-то религиозно-исторический контекст. У вас есть, кроме вашего мнения, какие-то документальные подтверждения ваших слов? Статистика? Трактовка понятий? Потому что без источников, которым можно доверять, можно и до рептилоидов так дойти - а у тех точно ни стыда, ни совести. А по существу. Я 2.5 года работала с англичанами, и они использовали это слово именно в значении "совесть". И как бы вам не хотелось верить в свои теории, мои коллеги очень добрые, деликатные люди, и слово "совесть" к ним применимо куда больше, чем ко многим нашим соотечественникам (по крайней мере моим, я не знаю, из какой вы страны).

Interersting video, but you should work harder on your English pronunciation, indeed. Your Russian accent is quite strong. Meanwhile, there are also purely English words, that have no direct sinonims in other languages. FORTNIGHT is an example. Подъезд - staircase.

I don’t teach English so I don’t need to work on my English pronunciation. My students perfectly understand me and that’s the main thing for me.

@@LinasLessons It's up to you, no doubt. Russian students will always understand you, since they probably pronounce words the same way. People usually learn foreign language so that they can communnicate with foregners, not with their countrymen - that's my point on it. Otherwise, as I mentioned above, it's up to you, for sure.
