Leave It to Beaver was a classic sitcom that aired for six seasons from 1957 to 1963. It was immensely popular in the United States during the time that it aired, and decades later, it is still referenced in a lot of pop culture. This iconic sitcom followed the young son of the Cleaver Family, Theodore. Among his friends and family, however, he was known more commonly as "The Beaver," which is where the name of the sitcom came from.
Two writers, Joe Connelly and Bob Mosher, got the idea for the show after observing their children. They realized just how interesting and hilarious the life and viewpoint of a child could be, and thus the original idea for Leave It to Beaver was born. While most classic sitcoms focused on families, the main characters were usually adults. When Leave It to Beaver aired, it was the first primetime sitcom that was centered around the life of a child. It was also groundbreaking because while Beaver got into plenty of trouble as a young boy, his parents were never viewed as the perfect caregivers. The show often displayed the struggles of parenting, something every American family could relate to.
This lovable show ended on June 20th, 1963, in a natural and satisfying way. As the main character Beaver prepares to enter high school, his elder brother, Wally, prepared to leave for college. Because much of the show focused on their dynamic as brothers, it wouldn't make sense for the show to continue running after the two were separated.
Even though the show ended long ago, however, it remains popular in many households across America, and reruns still air on some channels. While the show never won any awards, much of the older generation can agree that the show played an important part in American culture.
Of course, while most people are aware of the on-screen events of this lovable sitcom, there are many behind the scenes facts that few are aware of. In today's video, we're going to look at ten shocking secrets of Leave It to Beaver. Make sure you stick around until the very end, where we'll reveal the real reason the show ended. We hope you like this video, and don't forget to subscribe to Facts Verse for more!

Although it is often viewed as simply a light, airy comedy, it occasionally addressed very serious social issues. For example, I remember a show which addressed ALCOHOLISM. A handyman, who Beaver adored, got drunk on the job and Beaver's parents explained to Beaver what alcoholism was. The show did not disparage alcoholics. Rather, it conveyed the message that they needed help.

'Suffice it to say that awards and recognition might've had higher bar in those days. . . TV was in its infancy. And in the same years as Leave It To Beaver was on the air, there were a handful of other well-done family sitcoms competing with it. 'Even without receiving awards recognition while it was on the air . . . 'more than a half-century later, it is widely regarded as a classic AND a model for other shows that followed it . . . I think that tops getting an award for your mantle any ol' day . . .

I wonder if the reason why it never got any awards is that it was seen as a " kids " show? Whether it was conscious or not, LTB, being centered around a child might have been seen as somewhat similar to Mister Ed.

The real heroes for the Leave It To Beaver show, were the writers who always had new ideas and new situations without falling into predictable, routine plots, like so many other TV shows. For example, at least every other Bewitched storyline, revolved around Darrin, his stupid boss, Larry and his job. The Beaver, (just like a real kid) was never so predictable.

@@FactsVerse Well I can't say I ever saw one i did not like. But if I had a favorite it would when Beaver and Larry gave their candy money to help a student. The older student said he needed the money to help feed his family mostly his little sister or sisters. He was suppose to pay it back to them in time to turn it into the teacher. But then the student acted like he didn't know what they were talking about when they asked for the money back. They had to confess to the teacher what had happened. The teacher Miss Landers took it from there!! Great episode of how not to trust others with money that is not yours!

I saw an interview with Tony Dow in which, among other things, he mentioned that he had suffered depression for a significant part of his life. In a way, that might have been why he was so perfect for the character of Wally, the almost perfect kid who always ended up holding the bag when things went wrong. He did everything right most of the time, but he always seemed a little down and his character would have been a lot less interesting if he hadn't. I hope he's overcome the worst of that; I know depression can be a major obstacle, but actors and singers always reveal a little of themselves and I can't imagine any other actor playing that role as well as he did.

My brother and I were a few years younger than the Beav. But that meant we were the perfect ages to be big, big fans of the show. We didn't see the first few seasons because our parents were not really interested in owning a TV. In fact, on our street only about two or three households (out of around 30) had TVs. This was in the late 50s. What changed all that was the first televised occurance of the Wizard of Oz in 1958. I can't tell you what a big deal this was for adults and kids alike. Parties were planned at the houses who had TVs. New TVs were purchased just for this occasion. I'll never forget it. There were about 30 people crowded into a neighbor's living room to watch the show. All afternoon there had been a big cookout and games and the adults all got pretty drunk. It was great. In any event, after this my parents decided to buy our own TV "set." There were two channels at that time, and on one we could watch "Leave It to Beaver." My brother and I LOVED that show. I was five and he was three. We also greatly enjoyed "The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show", "The Life of Riley", "M Squad", etc. Some of these were already in their first reruns. For some reason we did NOT like "I Love Lucy." I remember thinking that I should like it, but I just found it irritating. No idea why. I liked all the afternoon cartoon shows of course. And it about this time that TV networks began rerunning a lot of really old stuff from the 20s, 30s and 40s. The Three Stooges, Our Gang, Laurel and Hardy, etc. Amazing stuff. And the technology was not great. I remember all of my male, adult relatives getting up on the roof at some point to rotate the antennae around while their wives would watch the screen to see if the reception improved. They would yell at each other through an open window. I thought I had died and gone to heaven when my grandfather allowed me to go up on to the roof with him. That was in about 1962.

What surprises ME about it is how bitter he was towards the show because of it. Many people do not know that Hugh Beaumont was an ordained minister. So it surprises me that a man of God would act in that manner.
@pcno2832
@pcno2832 3 жыл бұрын
@@retroguy9494 I've read other descriptions of his attitude and the word "bitter" might have been an overstatement. The way I understood it, he just wasn't in a situation in which he could enjoy the show the way one would hope to. It was probably a little like living in a house in which a loved one had died; it wouldn't be the house's fault, but the association would still be hard to overcome.

In several of the episodes the beaver and his friends were wanting a surfboard. In another episode Ward (the father) was reassuring his wife June that the boys would be ok, after all they were 40 miles from the ocean....and the boys had just left the house. I'm pretty sure wherever Mayfield was located in was near the ocean.

They spoke of the ocean being 20 miles away. They spoke of California as somewhere else. They often talked about relatives being "back east" so I assume they were somewhere out west. No one had an "Oregonian" accent, so I thought it might be Washington.

This show was great to watch and many could relate to Beaver and there were some households as strict or stricter than this family. Back then kids had to check in with parents and be home by a certain hour for dinner and then do homework. That was all what this program was about having fun, and responsibility.

I grew up on Leave It To Beaver, Andy Griffith, My Three Sons, I Love Lucy - shows of a more simpler but fun way of living. These shows are so much better than what we see on TV today. I hate reality TV - the people they choose to use are not good role models for children today.

@@jessebaldwin2661 Well, there IS a Madison, New Jersey. It IS both a couple hours as well as approximately 40 miles from the ocean (the Jersey Shore depending on which town you go to). But it snows in Madison, New Jersey and it never snowed in Mayfield. Plus you can't get any further east than New Jersey and they said they had relatives "back east." There are 27 towns in the United States named Madison. The only ones that would remotely fit the other statements in the show would be California, Alabama, or Mississippi. Since they do not speak with southern accents, I'm going with California. The Pacific Ocean is about a 2 hour and 40 minute drive from Madison although its roughly 130 miles, not 40. Plus, using the phrase "back east" was definitely a California thing during that time period. And the show WAS filmed in California!

And which episode would that be? As is typical of many juicy stories found on the Internet, this one has little bearing on the truth - June never said anything that salacious to Ward in any episode. There was one episode where Ward sternly reprimanded Beaver for disobeying his mother, which resulted in an heirloom from Aunt Martha getting damaged. Ward then ordered Beaver to go to his room and write a letter of apology to Aunt Martha. Immediately after Beaver left with Wally, June said to Ward, "Ward, don't you think you were a little bit rough on Beaver? He's been through a lot today." Doesn't sound quite as spicy now, does it?
