Other show i enjoyed a few years ago was akta människor, but again, wasn't paying atention to the language learning, so, i don't know how good would it be. The story tho, exelent

@@daysandwords I hadn’t heard of Skam before. Looks like Klassen is the same concept but aimed at a younger audience. It’s the best thing I’ve found covering real life issues without being too complex. After almost 11 months living in Sweden I’m getting to the stage where when I speak Swedish to people they answer back in Swedish instead of English. I only started learning properly in the middle of May when I started SFI C. Because of COVID there’s been a massively reduced class schedule, but it’s still been really helpful. What’s been interesting is that I started two months after my classmates and was far below their level, but have done a lot of reading of Swedish books and watching Swedish TV since. Now I and four other classmates are moving up over two months early to SFI D out of a total of over 20 students. The immersion has definitely paid off. On the downside I’ve got an exam from 8.30am to 14.00 tomorrow (with breaks) on reading, listening and writing skills and a 30 minute interview on Tuesday to test my speaking skills. A bit scary, but fun to see how I do. Learning Swedish is the best thing I’ve ever done. It’s such a great feeling to have an entire conversation with someone in a language that I couldn’t speak six months ago. The first time I spoke entirely in Swedish on a visit to my Swedish in-laws was amazing after 26 years of them having to speak English with me.

Solsidan is good for every day dialogue but it's hard to watch haha.

I'm glad because honestly I've been thinking about what to make the thumbnail for like 3 days. It's so hard to walk the line between something that actually looks good, something that makes people want to click and something that actually gives some information on what is contained within the video. At one point the thumbnail was literally just Wilhelm's close up (this same bit) but filling the whole screen and nothing else. Anyway, hope you liked the list!

I honestly don't get how people could have a fluency marker. Time is a different thing but I haven't got time to answer this now. I might do a video on it soonish because I have some other non-Swedish experiments starting soon.

The problem I have always had with the Chrome extension is the "Chrome" bit. Can't they make it for a decent browser...

I think you will be surprised. Norwegian is not massively different to Swedish and other than a few gotchas (å bruke vs att bruka being one that comes to mind) it is just like a dialect in many ways.

It actually has basically nothing to do with your location... that is, what shows people can and can't see DOES have to do with location but it's not Sweden = more shows in Swedish. It's just "certain country = certain show".

@@daysandwords that’s true normally, but in Europe it is more complicated. All European countries can access their home Netflix catalogue abroad. So, for example, when I was last in Norway 2 years ago, I still saw the UK catalogue. But since that time we obviously left the European Union, so who knows. Either way, my UK Netflix account can access a lot of Swedish movies, like a lot. So either we are flooded by Swedish content, or my account thinks I belong to Sweden. Either way, I can see at least 30 or 40 Swedish language movies. I threw up an Instagram post with the list I made and tagged you.

They're not all on Netflix at all, so it's got nothing to do with Australia.

Björnstad is HBO so that one is a bit of a struggle to find, Draknästet is SVT Play, Bron isn't on Aussie Netflix but you might find it SBS-on-demand, Vår tid är nu: I addressed the issue there, Uppdrag Mat is on KZfaq so that's easy. It's really only Björnstad that is hard to get and that I didn't address.

Is the profile's options and settings and everything in Swedish? For example, at the top left it should say "Hem, Serier, Filmer, Nytt och populärt, Min lista..." If that's the case, then type in "Despicable Me" or "Dumma Mej" into the search and click on it (doesn't matter what the thumbnail for it says, just click on it), and then click on language options. If the languages and subtitles are listed IN English, then you've done something wrong. They should be listed in Swedish, and "svenska" should be one of them.

Ohhhh I get you. Oh well, yeah, once you do it for ONE show where it isn't the first language, I think it essentially trips a wire in the Netflix settings to then show you svenska as an option. This is actually how I discovered this trick, because I used to do it the same way as you did - but if you create an entirely new profile from Australia and don't change anything, or maybe you might even need to create a new ACCOUNT, you'll find that the language options on kids' movies are English, Italian, Mandarin, Arabic and sometimes Croatian or something... definitely not Swedish. It's 100% a real thing because dozens of people have confirmed this result, and I just did the same thing today for a language that I've ltierally never seen in the language options, and now I can watch any Dreamworks etc movie in it.

I have noticed on my English Netflix profile that if I set Swedish as the audio in one movie it will automatically now play any other available show in Swedish audio which is good. Forces me to listen to more Swedish without having to look to see if that movie is dubbed into Swedish first.

Sorry, I didn't see this. Most apps don't have Swedish so I would say Duolingo is not bad (but you should cheat on the placement test so you don't get tied to doing the tree at their pace), and SwedishPod101 is actually pretty good too but you should listen to the dialogues a lot rather than the English parts.

Hmm sist jag kollade var det på Amazon Prime Video men också kunde man hitta säsonger 2-4 på SVT Play. Sorry I just realised you asked me in English haha... Pretty sure you can see all 4 seasons if you have Amazon Prime, and seasons 2-4 on SVT Play. I think SVT Play has it for like 6 months of every 2 years or something.

No, SVT Play is a public Swedish service. They even have some stuff that is free from anywhere in the world, but most of the good stuff is not.

You wanted a story about a small publishing house trying to survive, they made a story about a woman repressed and oppressed (by husband) in various ways trying to find her true self and learn to love and let go. Just different topic. It’s an incredible show, something you could never find in Hollywood.

Hey OaktownGirl - hmm, well, I liked both stories. I mean, it's not in my top 10 series EVER or anything like that. I just think it's funny. The publishing house thing was good yes, but I feel like the general setting has been done before in Dix pour cent ("Call My Agent!" in English), and I feel that Kärlek och anarki had just enough of a Swedish twist that they could explore Swedish culture in it. If it wasn't in Swedish I probably wouldn't really care about it that much, whereas Kali**t and Björnstad are good series in their owns rights, although I think I'm becoming a bit too aware of Swedish culture to really know what I would like without that coming into it.

That's actually all countries that don't dub stuff for adults. So like, the Netherlands, Belgium, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland, Finland, Estonia, Romania... the list goes on. They all dub stuff for kids but not for adults, it's a pretty common model.

I think the situation is improving worldwide with things like Netflix giving people options and even telling us which one the original language is, and then KZfaq where even French kids are growing up hearing English (not always a good thing but that's a conversation for another day). Australia is both good and bad: Our foreign film distributors here have never really been dubbers. I think I was in my teens before I saw anything dubbed, but I had seen things with subtitles. (On TV and on VHS.) Then came DVDs where you could sometimes choose the language - but often you couldn't and in Australia you would always get VO (e.g. my copy of "Joyeux Noël" is only in French, even though it's distributed in Australia). So if an Australian watched La casa de papel or Babylon Berlin or whatever, then I believe there's a 95% chance that they'll choose subtitles rather than dubbing, because we're not used to dubbing and American accents don't sound pleasant to us anyway. So that's all GOOD. BUT - we are talking about a minority of situations that the question even arises because foreign (as in, non English) things are still considered very very alternative here. Yes that situation is also improving, in no small part due to Norden, because Millennium series, The Bridge, The Killing, Trapped and a few others kind of "exploded" here. But when I say "exploded", I mean that it went from 1 in 50 people would watch something like that, to 5 in 50. Since then Narcos, Dark and La casa de papel have probably been the most watched subtitled things. But I'd say it's still a case of "arty people like Lamont watch stuff in crazy languages like German and Swedish..." A few people even pause when you tell them that you're watching something in Icelandic because they are not sure "how" this happens (as in, is the show actually IN Icelandic? Does it have like... subtitles? Or what?) But it's hard for me to know because obviously my friends are more in that "kretsan" and we are all familiar with subtitles etc. Out of those guys, I am the weird one who has gone so far as to remove the need for subtitles on Swedish stuff haha. So progress is slow but steady.

@@attesmatte It's been that long since I watched normal news (Australian news is all propaganda) that I can't say for sure but I am fairly sure it's voiceover. Voiceover which is slightly different to dubbing: They let the person say like half a sentence and then that audio fades and a professional newsreader's voice comes in over the top and you can still hear the person talking in the original language (but only softly under the English). I have also seen subtitles, but that's rare.

I actually think that trying to "get" similar languages like Danish or Norwegian (or Swedish if you're studying one of those) is a mistake. Swedish natives only understand Norwegian because the 80% that is the same or close enough is parsed completely automatically, leaving all their attention to focus on the remaining 20%. In other words, Norwegian isn't actually that easy to understand - it's just that Swedish/Danish natives are "GOAT" level at their own native language (and vice versa with the other combinations). Even very advanced students are nowhere near native level, e.g. myself. I can understand Norwegian when I'm speaking to Norwegians, and I can understand Swedish series basically perfectly, but I struggle to understand Norwegian series. It'd be like trying to learn to hit a curve ball at major league level when you're still only hitting fast balls at college level. Therefore, I don't recommend anything in Norwegian to anything but extremely advanced Swedish students.
