I have found myself in dangerous positions on roads I am acquainted with simply because another driver was overtaking in a blind corner and therefore coming straight at me! Always keep a margin of error (your error or somebody elses, especially in curvy mountain roads with massive ravines)

Merging at 35mph??? What are you insane???? Slow down dude, you need to wait until you've been on the interstate for at least 10 seconds before you get to those speeds. That way when you pull in front of the other drivers on the interstae it forces them to slow down, because slow is safe. Also that "acceleration lane" is used for extra texting time, getting something from the backseat, getting your food ready to eat. All the really important things that you need to be doing while driving.

or you can try what some guy did to me today, join right on at 40 and pull straight into the middle lane in a tiny gap with cars doing 70. That way you know if they are good motorway companions if they are able to swerve out the way and miss you

actually, you *should not* rest your foot on the clutch, because as you say, you could accidentaly slightly press the clutch without noticing it. You also shouldn't rest your right hand on the shifter when in gear, for pretty much the same reason. Yup, your english is fine. One thing the german school system does right. (zumindest in Bayern ;-) )

It shouldn't be. When you hit the brake pedal it will sink down to the level of the gas pedal, allowing you to roll or slide your heel over smoothly.

Some cars alow you to heel and toe even when you go easy on the brakes and in some cars you have to go hard on the brakes to heel and toe but you can just rev match instead. In my opinion rev matching or heel and toe is helpful only on track or when you are pushing your car to the limit. Being in the gear when driving a FWD makes your car more stable but in a RWD when you are approaching the intersection and the road is wet it's better just to be in the neutral when slowing down. And from my observations rev matching all the time does not decrease fuel consumpion when driving in the city. I used to rev match all the time but now I do it only when I'm revving my car very high and when I'm in hurry.

Similar issue for me. I can't heel and toe in my car ( Subaru BRZ 6 speed manual), but can do it just fine in my truck (International ProStar 10 speed manual), all because the pedals are spaced out. The pedals in my car seem too close for heel and toe and every time I try rolling my foot, I end up applying too much brake or not enough gas.

Heel toeing doesn't fuck your clutch. It does the opposite, when your foots on the brake and you need to change down its just rev match, which will prolong the life of the clutch. Might be abit jerks at first and tbh you don't need to do it too often if you are out and about on public roads if you think far enough ahead but sometimes you end up on the brakes and needing downshift and it just helps to to be a more smooth change.

Don't fuck up _your_ clutch then. Get a cheap rental car for a day and fuck up _their_ clutch.

Clutches are built to high standards and are very tough, so don't worry too much about jacking it up.

I saw one driver online who used the left and right sides of his foot across the brake and accelerator to do a modification on heel-and-toe and it seemed to work well, but I don't know if this just because he had big feet and pedals that were quite close together. Haven't tried it yet.

no, I feel the same way too. I'm a petrolhead myself, and for me, it's stick shift or nothing. Now, as for the non petrolheads, with the exception of having no other option, (like renting a car) people who drive automatic are lazy imo.

I think manual cars are more common in most countries except except the United States (and maybe in the UK aswell?). At least here in Sweden the only people who get the automatic only-license are the ones who really can't learn to drive a manual.

If you're old enough, then it's never late to learn. If you're 10 years old, ask your father to buy you a $500 lemon with manual tranny to practice and wrench on before you turn 18, and by that time you'll pass all tests with flying colours. Japanese cars usually have enough seat adjustment to accomodate an average 10-year old westerner.

It's easy. Brake aggressively, tailgate, don't use your blinkers, pull out when it's clearly not safe to do so and drive down the middle lane to skip ahead in traffic.

I have this problem... to even reach for the accelerator my brake pedal has to be fully down, and braking super hard. Its not suitable if your pedals are kinda far away from each other

NyckLP Yeah, exactly what I meant, in my case it's simply because the accelerator is offset backwards a bit too much. And the accelerator pedal hinges the other way around. (hinge is on the bottom, so you have to push on the top side) You could solve it by braking with your heel and pressing the throttle with your toe, that will actually solve the problem, but it creates another one: how the heck can you comfortable brake with your heel?

I've never even heard of that before! It's weird to think that car manufacturers would purposefully design the footwell to prevent that. I guess I've been spoiled by my 850, the ergonomics of that cockpit are so well-suited to aggressive driving.

NyckLP A Volvo 850 is still a practical family vehicle with excellent crash safety, plenty of cargo room (with the 855), and decent mileage, but also has some serious performance as well. The stock N/A comes with 170bhp and 165 ft/lbs, and the GLT turbo has 200bhp with 200ft/lbs. The rear suspension has passive 4-wheel-steering. They can be had for less than 2k as well (in the states, even less elsewhere). I would suggest looking into one of those.

That's a skill many refer to as "rev matching" but the only main obvious difference is that you can't use the brake at the same time but both techniques have their uses. I can't "heel and toe" either because I have a hard time twisting my ankle in such an awkward position while seated in my car.

I do the same. I've seen people heel-toe by keeping their foot half over the brake and half over the throttle. The movement is much easier that way, but it still takes some practice

Heel-toe downshifting probably is indeed a little bit too much for everyday driving. Instead, they should have mentioned simple rev-matching when downshifting, a technique that not many people are aware of.

That's what I was thinking of. When I started driving it was quite difficult and I was only about done learning how to match shifting up. But after a while I realized that it not only saves the clutch but also makes for a much smoother driving, when you know how to rev-match when shifting down.

Actually heel-toe downshifting is also important for emergency stopping, i.e. accident ahead of you, someone hops on the brakes and gives you little time to react. When doing heel-toe downshifting you can combine the brakes with engine breaking and will stop much quicker compared to just pressing the brake pedal and hoping for the best. :) On the other hand If you do engine breaking without heel-toe to rev match you will fuck up your transmission and clutch. So yes, while not necessary for everyday 'casual' driving, it is definitely very useful to know how to do, it has saved my ass a few times already.

Kris Tonev i don't see how using engine braking in an emergency can make the situation any safer. If your braking system is not broken, it must be capable of locking all wheels completely. When your wheels are stopped there's no point in applying additional braking force from the engine, the car is already slowing down as quick as it's possible with the current tires. If your car has ABS it's even more dangerous, because if you accidently apply to much engine braking, you can lock front/rear wheels (for FWD/RWD cars) while the opposite pair of wheels would keep spinning, because abs is preventing them from locking. With such imbalance of braking force the car can easily spin out. So i would say, in case of an emergency just press the brakes, and also press the clutch so that any remaining torque from the engine would not be able to distort the braking forces acting on wheels.

+Kris Tonev Did you ever do an emergency stop? When you push the brakes so hard that the ABS kicks in, I bet you can't slide your foot over to the gas pedal without loosening up on the brake pedal. Even if you could, apart from taking an unnecessary risk, your car will not slow down faster with engine braking, since the ABS already keeps the brakes at the physical limit of what the tires can transfer. In normal situations, if you let go off the gas, the car will slow down so slowly compared to a full slam on the brakes, that its added deceleration wouldn't make a difference that is worth taking that risk for, anyways. Also deceleration with the brakes is so quick that you are spending most of your time switching gears and the engine isn't even braking. +Dive These Clips Thanks for your comment, you beat me to it ;-)
