I’ve been interested in electric vehicle technology for a long time now, but I honestly hadn’t done a whole lot of research other than casually reading an article or watching a video here and there, but now that I own this Jeep Wrangler 4xe Plug In Electric Hybrid (PHEV) well, I’ve learned a ton and I’m going to share with you some big and little things I’ve learned about the 4xe after having owned it now for 2 month… stuff that maybe you didn’t know either.

The pressurized gas tank is to make sure your fuel doesn’t go bad. If you have short commutes and plug in often, it’s quite possible that you don’t fill up for well over a month or more. So yeah, the button is for safety (depressurization so it doesn’t spray you when you open it) but has nothing to do with it being electric ⚡️.

Design must cover edge case where customer charges every day. Could have factory gas only for a very long time. If the gas engine never runs there is no opportunity to purge the carbon canister so venting the tank is discouraged. Also to avoid loss of volatiles needed for cold start and reduce peroxide from oxidation.

We’ve had our 4xe for a year in march. So far, no issues. I will note, check with your dealer often for updates to the jeep, because they won’t tell you. My wife drives it to work and doesn’t use a drop of gas for weeks. Yes, the 4xe is heavier. But, you can notice it on the highway and the jeep feels more stable and planted. It pulls our tribe overland trailer just fine, on and off-road. As always, great video. Cheers 🍻 PS, we just received some of your coffee. AMAZING!

That's a good point. The extra weight, and suspension tuned for that weight makes for a very smooth ride compared to my previous JL. I am also of the opinion that the extra weight, centered in the 4xe, made for excellent driving characteristics during our recent midwest snowmageddon.

@@dsonnek7781 that’s a lengthy conversation and a lot to type. I pull a 2k lb overland bad camp trailer. And it really depends on the terrain. Normal road conditions I lose about 2mpg. If I’m in the throttle on mountain fire roads or rougher off-road trails it gets worse. All depends on how much your in the throttle or if your locked in. That would be something for Brad to have a video on for more of a visual

I've had my Sahara 4XE since April, love it. I've used it mostly for rock crawling and its been a beast with no issues. I had no idea you guys pay so much for electricity, I'm in San Diego often so I knew about gas prices. Here in Austin Texas I pay 9 cents a kwh 24 hours a day, plus with solar panels I charge the Jeep for free if the sun is out (usually is) . Gas is $2.90 a gallon. Moving to the San Diego area in the future, guess I'll have to re-think my budget. Great video, nailed it. Oh, and my Dometic frig will run at least 4 days.

I’ve had mine 11 months so far. Last summer I could go a month on a tank. I don’t drive a lot and was getting 700 miles per tank charging nightly. Work is about 20 miles round trip. However over the Michigan winter, the engine starts after a couple of minutes and uses gas almost like a traditional vehicle. So I was getting around 350-400 per tank. Still good. Also, not mentioned is the 4xe tank is a few gallons smaller than the normal Jeep. This is my first every Wrangler. I’m undecided if I will get a 4xe next time (currently leasing) or ICE. I do love that the start/stop tech isn’t perceivable when leaving a stop light even with a depleted battery. Overall, I do love my Jeep.

I am so glad you are sharing real world content on this as this was a Jeep model I was always curious about but never could pull the trigger on for myself. The more & more I look at it, & honestly the more content you make on it, the more I am thinking it is a great solution for my wife & I. It may still be a year or two yet before we can fit that into our budget but man, will I keep an eye on the content you keep making with this vehicle. Great video. Keep 4xE content coming, I’m super interested! You made a comment about payload capacity. Help us understand (maybe in a future video) how getting close to that is a bad thing. Does that mean extra wear and tear? Perhaps the components aren’t sturdy enough to support it? Or is it just a general guideline that no one bothers listening to because it really doesn’t matter…

The nice thing about the 4xe rear seats is that you can store items in the passenger foot well when the seat is folded down, which is not the case with the standard JL. Pro tip :)... Your ham/gmrs radio mounts quite nicely to the bottom of the drivers side passenger seat. Also, if your missing the cup holders, this is easy to add back by removing the "cup holder delete" organizer and replacing it with the standard JL passenger console.

my 2018 2.0 I4 jeep rubicon also utilizes that DC to DC charger off a 48V mild hybrid pack. it's kinda weird... but it's the only vehicle where the stop/start doesn't bother me cause it's not cranking the actual cold start starter every time. It uses that huge BSG on the engine to turn it over on hot start.

I totally agree that there needs to be a standard for EV plugs, especially as our state (CA) and the country invests more heavily in charging infrastructure. I am even more excited for the next generation of the 4xE for the possibility of better efficiency. As pretty much everyone on this channel knows, the biggest negative of owning a Jeep is paying at the pump, and I would like to see an effective 40+ mpg Hybrid or EV down the road, especially as gas prices are expected to continue to rise.

Having a universal charging system would pave the road for future EV infrastructure which would benefit all EV companies. Very few people are actually against EVs, they just don't see them as practical because you cannot take them out of major cities. Lets not have a company that cant even line up their quarter panels slow us down from having chargers everywhere.

I believe the delay in the fuel door release to release pressure is to keep air out of the fuel tank in order to keep the gasoline from going bad over time. Many PHEV drivers go months without putting fresh gas in their tanks. At least that's the information provided with my Honda Clarity PHEV.

I'm guessing for now it will be the same as the JL but they do have a big space opposite the fuel tank where people are putting aux tanks. That would be a good location. But more battery equals more weight, and less payload, which can be important for those of us using it as a truck or for long camping trips.

Great review even in 2024. Thanks for the info regarding the power company. It applied to NY, too. I didn’t realize that. And you’re spot on with who it is for. Most of my driving is under 20 miles. I put a level 2 in and use pure electric 98% of the time. So there that, and it is a lot of fun to drive with an open rooftop. Thanks!

The concern I have about getting a 4xe is the "Jeep things". I have 2 2020 JLURs manufactured 4 months apart. They are supper fun vehicles and by far my most favorite vehicle I have owned. However, both have had quarks about them. Both have had their radios replaced. Their on board navagation sucks. The aux switches were replaced on one. The eLocker was replaced. Both steering boxes were replaced. All under warranty. The "hidden" battery that goes out every 2 years. Both my wife and I were 4x4ing out in the boonies when both vehicles at the same bump in the road went nuts. The dash board lit up. 4x4 malfunction, lockers inoperable, swaybar error. We stuck it in 2 wheel drive and was unable to continue. A buddy recommended I shut it down and open/close the door. Started it up again and no problem. Dealer said it just needed a reset and everything was okay. Love my Jeep, but there is no way I would want my Jeep any more dependant on Jeep's electrical/software team.

And the 4xe’s are known to have issues as well. Although they are likely the minority but a huge pain for those who have them.

Yep...I had those issues plus others in 2 years of owning a jlu. There's a reason jeep quality and service consistently rates poorly. I finally got sick of it and sold it...haven't missed it much.

Thanks for the information . I would live one just for a daily driver, nothing crazy. Seems it could fit the bill for that purpose. I wonder how the colder climates effect the battery.

I have a Mach-E and we just got a Hybrid Maverick. Looking forward to a BEV Wrangler but the PHEV does sound nice. Use PlugShare to find EVSEs, you can filter by plug type.

I went from 2019 rubicon to 4XE for about 8 months. Love it. I wish you would have covered the difference in fuel economy from standard v6 rubicon to 4XE. That was the most shocking as I was only getting 15.5 city / 18.0 hwy on my 2019.

My interest was just piqued earlier today on the Wrangler 4xe. The first one of these I ever saw was at a hotel in Moab early in the morning. It was plugged in charging up. Someone, from Jeep Corporation (it hadn't been launched yet) had apparently stayed in the same hotel my wife and I had stayed in the night before. It could be that a hybrid Wrangler may be a wonderful fit for my wife and I here on Molokai. (As a second car to our extremely reliable 2012 JK Rubicon Unlimited.) Your videos are always great. Until earlier today, I never had any desire to buy/rent and electric car of any kind. Someone else's video on a 4xe Wrangler got my attention! Great work on all your videos. Welcome your oldest son to the World of Jeep! Andy McKane.

The video is a year old but still very relevant information while I'm awaiting my 2024 4xe. A couple of questions if you're still willing: 1. Did you have 35" tires from the dealer, or after market? 2. If they were after market, did you see a change in the electric range or gas mileage with 35's? 3. Did you add an after market suspension to fit the 35's or just the stock 4xe suspension? Sorry if these have been asked and answered, but thanks in advance.
