Philey why? Choose a fast lane and start your warmup, then some speed intervals. You can put on your fins and do some power/speed training also. And it’s Ok to have occasional contact. Usually it gets better on a lane.
@mik3ydll

especially in Germany and Austria afaik it's common to not have any lanes set up, meaning that people are all over the place just talking etc. and wasting space. The best thing is that, then they would also complain if someone splashes them when exercising. I really hate swim training without a reserved lane (swim clubs) because of that.

@mik3ydll. Thanks I needed a laugh. I train in a pool in Thailand and they don’t have lanes either. People and groups will stand right where you are swimming and kids and teens do it as a game and jump away at last second always causing problems......but at least they don’t complain when I hit, splash or yell at them they just laugh and go away.

When the lifeguard watches the fast swimming lane fill up with people walking. Sharing a lane with 'The Splasher'. When the pool is full but the pro insists on soloing his lane by doing endless butterfly. Being hoofed by the guy doing breastroke in the next lane. Accidentally hoofing someone yourself,missing the moment to say sorry and then the awkward feeling everytime you rest at the same end. Parents who watch with ambivalence as their child traverses laterally across the pool. Aaaaaaaand... not swimming. Oh, that felt good to get off my chest, thank you!

Ok, I admit it. I am one of those middle-aged men in the fast lane. Yeah, I've got a bit of a belly but I am almost fifty. You gotta accept these things 🤣 Anyway, I'm fast enough to hold my own in the fast lane with the rest of the regular early morning (middle-aged) swimmers. But if a twenty-something dives in with zero body fat, a 25m split under 5secs and a flawless flip at both ends, I know when I'm beat. I'm outta there! 😎

No need for foggy googles! 1 part "no tear" baby shampoo and 4 parts water. Mix and put in a spray bottle. Spray your googles before you swim and you will have clear googles the whole time. Make sure to rinse googles with clean tap water after swimming to prevent a buildup of chlorine and other pool chemicals.

I use any shower gel, put one or two drops and rub inside of goggles. After a small foam creates I rinse with a cold (cold very important) water and you can have 2-3 swim sessions fog free. In emergency during swimming spitting your saliva works amazing as a substitute for forgotten shower gel treatment.

How about getting water in your sinuses (from flip turns etc) and then, hours later bending over and having a stream of water come out of your nose unexpectedly! or Going to your pool to find it is unavailable due to a group of aqua aerobics! or Forgetting your towel so you use your shirt to dry off after your swim or Not having a private area to change, so you develop a way to completely remove your underwear and put on your suit while wearing a towel as cover! or The awful sense of dread while standing on the edge of a cold pool just before you get in!

Haha I quit swim years ago, but I still did dive! I only relate to dryland/land training. Swimmers just jump in the pool and start warmup laps, but for divers it’s a whole regimen of running, a quick an workout, and plenty of stretching. Gotta love that deep pike

Oh the flip turn, in addition to being nearsighted I am also cross-eyed so therefore have poor depth perception... I'm pretty good now about not running my head into the wall anymore 🤗. But on occasion I will flip to early thinking I'm in the right spot and there is nothing to push off... Yeah so those of us who can't see that well even with prescription goggles still have fun in the pool.

As a national swimmer, i can confirm that ALL of these examples are 100% accurate, but also as a swimmer you will experience the following: -Warm-up sprinters(hate them) -Cold Pools -Getting out of bed at 5am is MORE challenging then the actual 2 hrs swim itself😂 -When a cap rips during a gala, that is the most annoying thing EVER -Swimmers who try to race you in trainning and get excited over beating you even if you didnt try -Swimmers who pull your feet to get in front off you -Swimmers who take a "toilet break" during a hard set -Swimmers who say that "this set wasn't hard at all" -People who "fix" their goggles in the middle of a set -EXTREME HUNGER! Like after swimming, swimmers can eat more than probably any animal that i know, that's how drainning this sport is This is just a FEW named examples of swimming from my own personal experience, but the WORST things and probably the funniest things to happen are that when you hit your hand on the lane rope it KILLS and feels like you hit barbed wire instead and hitting arms with your mate when swimming butterfly, also there are people who swim a 1500m WITHOUT goggles and people who swim down the middle of the lane and swim into you

I only started swimming in 2018 and never learned the math part; Garmin does all the calculating. Swimming must've been difficult back in the non-smart watch dark ages! :) Though once I jumped to a 50 m pool but forgot to change the pool length settings in advance. For the first 300 metres or so I was completely lost why my watch has just gone haywire!

I was asked to meet someone who had moved to my city a couple of months previously. We met at a cafe and got on well. At my next lifesaving class, my regular partner for the previous few weeks reminded me of the girl I'd met up with. Turned out we'd been partners in the class and neither of us recognised the other when we met up!

Lol, the cap one is so true. But using silicone caps and not latex ones helps. Also I cannot stand the pulling, so the only way I wear caps is by reversing the cap, filling it with water, then dropping it on my head. I've done it so many times that its faster than the normal way, and it doesnt pull on my hair.

A variation on the tumble turn mishap... I was once in a 100yd race in a pool that had a trough at the end. My feet seamlessly slipped into the trough and locked into it, stopping me instantly. Of course, everyone else carried on, leaving me floundering...

When you swim in the context of triathlon practice, it's also worse. The worst thing for me is eating, as after training in swimming I may go biking or running or both and it's not that you can eat large amounts of food after swimming if you are going to bike and/or run . I manage to use gels as I can assimilate them quite easily, but it's a bit of a pain nonetheless.

Land Training! Haha! Worst nightmare now is training during a public session in a lane marked 'Fast Lane' and you really are the only person in there who is. Invariably sorted by a Butterly set or two, but 'fast' should be for the fast! There is the rest of the pool where the less speedy can plow up and down. - by fast, I do realise that there aren't many truly fast punters out there. I know pacing isn't my strong point though as I started my first ever tri with a 16m 28-sec 25m pool 1500m! 35 years on and I'm not so speedy!
