Hello Frederique, my maternal grandmother would make sure her hair was combed, wore earrings, a ring, hose clean shoes and her dress or suit fit her perfect. She was very neat. She didn't wear makeup except a light lipstick. My mom filled in her eyebrows, mascara, little blush, powder, lipstick, her dress was nice and neat, string of pearls,, earrings, hose, shoes. They wore minimal makeup, but looked nice.

My maternal grandmother worked hard to raise 5 children after her husband abandoned her. I don’t remember many things she told me and she was ill for the later part of her life and died when I was about 10. I do remember her humming hymns all the time. I remember my mom telling me that at one time, my grandmother only had 2 dresses; one she wore to work cleaning other people’s houses and one she wore to church on Sunday. From that I learned to appreciate and care for everything I had. I learned that family is everything. I learned from my grandmother’s life that a woman can be strong and feminine at the same time. I learned from my grandmother that you don’t have to talk a lot to leave a legacy.

I was taught by my mother to never leave the house without brushing your hair, putting on lipstick, perfume, and earrings, even if only going to the corner store. One never knows who you’ll meet while out. My husband once prodded me into going out with him for a walk around the neighborhood for exercise without makeup, wearing just lip balm on my face. We ran into a colleague of his! I was so embarrassed, as it is not how I usually present myself in public. Lesson learned.

My grandma's number one rule for all women, including me, was to always have/earn my own money and something saved on the side. She taught me that I have to use moisturizer, hand cream, and lip balm every day, plus clean my skin every night. That you have to wash your privates and change your underwear every day (I thought everyone did that), and find your perfect rouge and perfume (she used to say that if you find one ideal lipstick and perfume, you're all done with the makeup) and never go out without them. Also, since she was a dressmaker, she told me to always be aware of the trends but dress for my body type and not the fashion. Grandmas are great

Frederique, THIS is exactly what I needed to lift my spirits today. My mother was adamant about 1) no elbows on the table, 2) do not talk with food in your mouth, 3) Always carry your lipstick and a compact to touch up your powder, 4) classy women are NEVER catty and 5) Don't ever show up at someone's door empty-handed. Even if the hosts advise that all the food is covered. ALWAYS have something for the hostess, beautiful flowers, wine, excellent chocolates. What I wouldn't give to hear her life lessons just one more time. Thank you Frederique, for helping us all to the acknowledge the wonderful women who have influenced our lives...and that includes you. Cheers from Canada!

This video sparked so many memories of my mother. She was very much like your grandmother…all the same rules and lessons. When she was dying from Alzheimer’s, the doctors couldn’t understand why she wouldn’t let go. She wasn’t eating or drinking, but she was agitated. I was 1200 miles away, and it was difficult to think of her like that. I went to bed, and the next morning, I called and asked the nurses to put on her lipstick. She settled down quickly, and later that morning, passed away looking her best.

Even the last week she lived we were helping her to look good when her friends were coming to see her to say their goodbyes. It's dignity and I hope my girls will do that for me one day if I need help.

When I got a dog, after several decades of being dogless, I figured out some outfits I could wear to walk the dog. A friend teased me that soon I’d be getting matching outfits for the dog (didn’t happen as the dog wanted nothing to do with it). I also started wearing nice joggers and a t-shirt to bed just in case the dog needed to go out in the middle of the night. I had neighbours in my building who would go to the laundry room in their bathrobe. Not me.

She'd always take me to nice sophisticated places to have coffee or lunch, and id love it and I still do, its probably why I don't feel uncomfortable in these places. I agree with all those things you said, especially about not loosing your cool in tricky situations - attracting the wrong attention is not good.

Thank you for this video! I actually attended a baptism and I wore a pleated skirt, tweed jacket with a small polene purse, closed toe heels, earrings with my hair tied back. I was so shocked at how casual everyone dressed! We were all in church too! Someone said they loved my outfit but alluded to how I may have been overdressed. I respectfully disagree. My paternal grandparents passed away before I was born. I’d like to think everything feminine in terms of looks, presentation came from my paternal grandmother through my dad. He was very strict about making sure our clothes were ironed, we had spritz of perfume, our hair was neat, etc… that was her influence.

One of my grandmothers was always styled to the T and looked like she wore haute couture. She loved to sew and draw. On all her travels she window shopped the classiest clothing stores, sketched the designs, hunted for the right fabrics, then sewed her outfits. She also sewed many of my sister's and my clothes, growing up. From her I know the importance of matching your clothes in a very classy way, down to your shoes and accessories. It has served me well, no matter how little money I had at a given time. Greetings from Austria 🇦🇹

My mom also sewed clothes for my sister and me. In high school, I’d find looks I liked in the latest magazines then go shopping with my mom for the pattern and fabric. She was an excellent seamstress who would sometimes cover the buttons and do those folds at the buttonholes that you only saw on high end items, but I could hear her sigh when I picked a Vogue pattern because those were more challenging than McCalls and Butterick. I was so lucky to have custom made clothes.

You really don't have to wear makeup, if you do proper skin care. Especially if you're dark haired with distinct eyelashes. Fortunately this trend has changed lately. In fact make up often highlights the imperfections on the skin and while those can appear as masked from afar, from close it's all very visible and not pleasing at all.

Really great video as it highlights that wearing expensive clothes does not make you 'classy'. What makes you classy is what you said - your manners, not eating with your mouth open, clean nails, being calm. My mother never me let me eat unless I was sitting down, so never walk and eat - very unclassy. Also make sure your shoes are clean and not curled up at the end (shoe trees when not being worn). Never wear clothes that are dirty or need mending. Great video as it shows ANYONE can be classy!

I took her to her dr appointment just prior to the party and will never forget it. She told the dr. to remove her portable chemo because it would be visible with her party dress. Love this!! The women in my family were always so put together!!! Yes!! Their hair, makeup, nails clothes shoes accessories everything all the time. And fragrance was a necessity!! I am 55 and I still do not ever leave the house unless I am put together because like my grandmother used to say you get up and get ready for your day no matter what because you never know what might happen or where or if you may need to go out. The women of today have lost their way 🤷🏻‍♀️ pjs in public no makeup hair a mess I don’t understand it.

1-Thank you for sharing who the great woman was in your life. 2-I think it was their generation...even though my grandmother was in a different nation she said all the exact same things. I think all over the world how you presented yourself and manners was valued more than it is today. 3-My dad used to say not having money does not equal to being dirty. You may not have a lot but can be presentable.

I loved this video. It made me think of my mother who always said, "when you go out, you never know who you will meet!". There are so many, like always smell nice like you say. Even if it's not perfume, just be clean. There is some nasty hygiene seen in some women. Also another one is wear good underwear, not only will you feel good but you will feel confident. I also think a great haircut does wonders too. Great video, thanks.

All great points and I do wear perfume in San Francisco. I think as long as it’s subtle, no one except someone super close to you will / should notice, and then, I frequently get complimented for smelling nice. Regardless of location, strong scents are always a bad idea. Scents definitely create long lasting memories just like Proust’s madeleines, a scent triggers a flood of memories subconsciously associated with a particular scent, whether a flower or your grandmother’s perfume.

Oddly enough the person who taught me to be a woman and more lady-like was my grandfather. He always told me to look polished, wear makeup that compliments me, a style that flatters my body, and above all confidence. He used to tell me that confidence is the final touch to a woman's look, if she believes that she is classy everyone else would too.

My father always told us (me and my sister) to cross the leg when we sit, no sound and close the mouth while eating, always shower and change pyjamas as soon as we woke up in the morning. In my early 20s one of my grandmother told me to put make up even if you are at home, just light face powder or eyebrow. Now looking back I thank them to be tough when we were little.

Any thoughts on micro-blading (tattooed eyebrows?) Mine were plucked to destruction in the seventies and didn't grow back. Add a couple of accidents (falling on my face from a cycle and a horse) and chunks are missing. Add, again, going grey...oh dear. I don't want over the top, instagram selfie eyebrows, but would love a subtle line.

It depends which country you come from or which class. I was brought up in the UK, middle class and the main advice was always dress appropriately for the event/situation. I live in the countryside and no one wears lipstick to clean up after the dogs or mucking out a stable. Also the weather plays a big part so warm and good quality clothing in natural colours is de rigour

I lived with my grandmother for a little while and she taught me the importance of impeccable hygiene, particularly neat and clean hair and properly cared for hands and feet. All these years later, I still dedicate my Sunday afternoons to giving myself a manicure and pedicure because I am absolutely miserable if my hands are not perfect for the week ahead. (By the way, I relate so much to you in all your videos and realized that it is because my birthday is only 3 days after yours [04/01/1973] so it is like you are my "spirit sister". I am so grateful to have discovered your channel and you have genuinely motivated me to work on becoming the very best version of myself from now on. Merci.)

My Granny was born in Victorian times, so her attitude was that only wicked women painted their faces and bleached their hair! She was a working-class woman from Glasgow, Scotland, and she did not have a lot of money for clothes, but she was always neat and tidy, and never left the house without a hat and gloves, woollen gloves in winter and cotton ones in summer, because it was just not ladylike to do anything else. She was “of her time” as they say. She died when I was quite young, but everyone says I am like her, not just in looks but in attitude, so there must have been some influence passed down. I think that looking well-presented is both self-respect and respect for others - you feel good yourself and others feel happy that you made an effort to please them. Now, of course, times have changed and while Granny might not have approved, I feel it is much better to wear makeup and do your nails than to look like you just could not be bothered. The trick is to be subtle and know when to stop - you don’t want to look like one of those wicked women!

I liked the video very much, Frederique. It's so light, optimistic but at the same time down to earth. I loved this one. The only section that made me sad is that I have a back deformity and I don't like having to explain to people who comment, how I unfortunately cannot sit up straight and neatly anymore. My grandmother always said if you use vulgar language people don't listen to the message. By you saying, " you scared me!", the message really sinks in.

Wow, your Mamie was a looker! Loved the first photo of her, and how classy she looks in that swimsuit that makes the most of her figure. My grandmother was strict on being polite and using good language (no slang), and also never left the house without lipstick. If family was expected for lunch, she would put lipstick on. She wore corsets all her life until her mid-70s, when she finally decided that in winter she'd wear slacks and a jumper rather than a fitted dress, and the corset wasn't so necessary. Because she kept out of the sun, she had the creamiest, most beautiful skin. I never saw her lose her temper; she was a lady through and through.
