3:31 The Gap was a huge status symbol in my school, in Brazil. My hometown is mostly white middle class, and they just really wish they could be from the US... in the 2000's, the most fashionable thing for my teenage colleagues was to travel to the US, and come back home with three itens: a Billabong backpack, an iPod, and a Gap hoodie. Sereously. They would wear those trashy things as if they were couture, it was hilarious.

The "Hard to find Shops" was my biggest battle when I visited Tokyo. Shops are really ducked off and the map was killing me.

Out here in the states, you do have some boutiques that carry Japanese labels, and often since they are so expensive you can snag stuff for 50% off.

sizing is the biggest obstacle. but i've found a few brands that do custom alterations and that is a god send, can get my japanese style clothing and have it fit my western frame to a T

Thank you so much for this video. I thought I was being picky or just not on the right side of the Internet... but yeah women's fashion in Japan is so disappointing. I now just stick with the import marketplaces or indie brands that open a webshop (and then disappear after a year or two).

Unless you go full Gyaru (and it's sub categories), whimsical, or one of the more peculiar ones, Japanese women's fashion is just far too scarce.

Same. My only gripe with Japanese fashion is the lack of sneaker sizes. Finding a collab over size 11 is a stretch

I remember being so surprised at how high the resell prices for sneakers and clothes was over in Japan! Totemo Takai dessyo! Thankfully the secondhand and vintage stores have crazy selections!

Hey Reggie. Great video as always. I still think that you should link the online websites of brands if they have one. Proxy services that service independent websites are commonplace now and cheap as well. The only tricky thing is regarding sizing, as some Japanese brands use 3D measurements instead of flat measurements. I guess that's one of my gripes about Japanese fashion. Keep it up!

Neighborhood will always have a place in my closet. They were the first Japanese brand that I could find that could fit my frame. Those Burton plaid cargos fit perfectly at a time when I was too nervous to take a risk and buy something because I thought it wouldn't fit. Being 6'3, 200 lbs. I essentially have to view Asian brands as an art piece. It's something I admire from afar given there's not a lot of options. Great video by the way!

I used to use the old superfuture blog to find obscure shops in my travels, which helped me a huge deal for London, Paris, Barcelona, and Italy. Still haven’t been to Japan, but I’m sure I would’ve gone crazy over there with this resource.

I would hope that there are at least a decent amount of pretty cheap vintage stores in Japan. Every time I see college / high school students on TokyoFashion or other fashion pages wearing designer and obscure expensive labels I really wonder how they manage to get it if the vintage stores are also expensive.

Neighborhood changed their sizing recently and their garments became soooo huge!!! I’m a Japanese so I had no issue with their previous sizings but now I do! I can’t even buy their hoodies anymore they fit way too loose for my liking :( I bet it’s a good change for customers in the west though!

@@itisyouthatiadore Now you have mentioned it, I guess WTAPS have a relatively big sizing also. I love Neighborhood but their Tees and hoodies are so oversized now that I cannot pull them off the way I want to :( I used to wear size M and now even their S is too large for me!

Finding hidden or hard to find stores is the best. Like a treasure hunt, you might even discover new things on the way. Inversely sometimes you find treasures in the randomest places by mistake too.

Their large literally fits like a medium. Best recommendation is either buy clothes in Uniqlo, GU, etc. since their sizing is similar globally or buy oversized.

You can call me honey!! lol. Yes, I would love to wear more Japanese fashion. What I like is there are sewing patterns that can be adjusted to fit curvier women.

Not sure if this happens in men’s clothes, but Japanese women’s clothes often come in what they call “free size” which means it will be either microscopic, or enormous, but only one size and you just pray that it’s your size. Also a lot of shoes come in SML, and again, you just hope that one of them sort of fits. I still love Japanese fashion, but the sizing makes me crazy. But at least I never have to hem my pants :)

Only like 2 other westerners in my area are into fashion or anything so it's so good to hear that someone else has is talkin about these frustrations! Clothing culture out here is dope, but i'm 185 cm with wide shoulders so the times I'd have to settle on like "well this is the one thing in my size that I somewhat like so I guess it's my only option." real shame sometimes

It's not just Japan; a lot of US designer labels top out at a women's 10-12. This is in a country were the average is about a 14.

Man just remember that cuts go both ways. As an asian I hate how american cuts are too. Shits baggy and floppy everywhere. But American brands will literally make something XXXXL sized before they do anything for a regular sized Asian.

Buying the right size is such a struggle.. even just living here and trying to find basic clothes for work is hard. I just have to pray GU sell oversized things

Do you have Japanese brands to recommend to american-sized humans? During the pandemic I’ve fallen into some dangerously expensive habits like learning about handmade boots and Japanese denim. But Japanese sneakers and other foot wear is hard to find in a US 12. Now I’ll admit I’ve gained some weight stuck at home baking and making recipes to cure boredom, but my broad shoulders and large chest is hard to find fits for even in some domestic brands.

My goal is to bring a Plus Size brand to the US as well as Japan I would love to manufacture my clothes in Japan would I have any trouble with the shoulder width or sizing with manufacturers? Also could you highlight some Plus Size brands that are in Japan of there is any lol

I guess you need to know about tariff for commercial apparel import over here. it's 10%. so naturally it has to be more expensive if they reroute their logistics directly from other parts of Asia, and the importer has to be the Japanese legal entity, and that's the law, if you look at the tag, a company name and phone numbers are always listed.

Well the Japanese brand i buy is UNiQlO well maybe sometimes MUJI and yeah the women section are minuscule even then often shared with kids section. Anyway maybe they open shop on the backstreet because the rent are cheaper?

I find as a Japanese brand expands internationally, sizing becomes less of an issue as they produce bigger sizes.

I get fashion shows only having sample sizes, but getting a full line in larger sizes from brands is hard, the cost to manufacture more sizes is a lot, and this is why I aspire to one day be able to make beautiful clothing in all sizes...

OMG... I truly wish I would your video before I purchase my shoes from Charles & Keith.. I wear a US size 8... they sent me a 38.. which is suppose to be the equivalent to the US size 8.. Epic fail the shoe is so small. their 38 felt like a US 7... I tried reaching out to them just make an exchange for a larger size... That turned out to be a dead zone... moving forward I just ended up selling the shoes to a co-worker with tiny feet.. She's happy.. I'm happy.. And no more overseas shopping for me unless I am there to try it on.

Honeslty though it is good that cloths are more expensive I. Japan because then they don’t overhaul on cloths like we do out west. They also are more careful with crafting their wardrobe and don’t just buy what is in trend. I find here in Switzerland it is much the same thing. Since cloths are so exoseive people think way more before buying and so everyone thinks of how it will fit into their wardrobe and if they will wear it in a few years. Which is way better then four west where people will buy like 20 items only to throw them out 2 years later bc it’s not in style anymore

Shopping is sorta ‘pain’ in the ass in Japan when every sales person is god dam friendly and nice to you that you feel bad not buying anything. (This was meant to be a good point 😅 but something that has me feeling really guilt-stricken). Agree with your listing, especially so with sizing and brands not having their dedicated sites. One point I might made is pieces made in Japan are often jacked up in pricing due to their exclusivity and policy of not selling to external markets and in parts the faults of the merchants; anywhere else, any Japan brand is like at least 1.5-2 times more expensive. I remember trying to buy a Leather bag made by Fujitaka which costed S$800 in Isetan Singapore, when I got it for S$200 dollars by shipping it from Japan.

The only good thing I like about “Japanese” brands that sell in the US is that they always go on clearance. The one that hurts me is Y-3, their clearance prices are good, but their more recent designs have been kinda ass. Last thing I bought was a boxy crewneck sweater on sale to wear around home lol.

Hey did you know that "hell" stepped over to first world problems? I had a message that one person can only see cute kittens en puppies on tv and he cant take the xuteneas so he falls asleep everytime! Also rhere is a mac but the fries are never well baked. Facts on Facts on Facts ... - The shoulder width this is so brutal 😦 - Shoe size 🤦🏽‍♂️... 13 ... nuff said ( i can't buy shoes in Japan - period) - I gave up years ago - Mercari - I hate you and love you 😩 - it's funny about the turnover with fashion because Japan is known to have the some of the oldest companies in the world - take care of your Japan fashion items, period, they really do re-sell well
