Buying the best trail camera for your budget is no easy task. With every company throwing made up terms and exaggerated specs, it's easy to get lost in trying to make the best purchase decision. Follow along as we break down the trail camera buying guide for you to buy the best camera for your money.
10 Things You NEED To Know When Buying a Trail Camera
1. Megapixels
Before we dive into why they don't matter for trail cameras, let's talk about what the heck megapixels are in the first place. A megapixel (following the metric pre-fix system) is simply a million pixels, and a pixel is defined as "a small area of illumination on a display screen, one of many from which an image is composed." but an easy way to look at that is like this:
A pixel is essentially a light collector. They are built into a cameras sensor (a small square that sits behind the cameras lens) and they read the light waves that come through the lens. They read that light data for color and intensity and work collectively to record that data into an image.
2. Trigger Speed
Trigger speed, also known as shutter speed, is the time that it takes for the camera to take picture after it has detected motion.
3. Flash Type
There are three main types of flashes for a trail camera. There are white flash cameras, infrared flash (“low glow”), or no glow cameras. Each one is different and presents unique advantages and disadvantages.
White Flash: White flash cameras give off a literal flash as if you were taking a photo with a DSLR camera. These cameras can give you spectacular night images, especially if you are looking for night photos with color. The downside to these cameras is that they are much more prone to spooking deer. If you are targeting a mature buck, or are trying to be as low impact as possible, these cameras can get a little dicey.
Low Glow: When it comes to the infrared flash cameras, they produce a visible red glow from the infrared emitters when taking night photos. You can see the red glow when looking at the camera, but in most cases, it is believed to be that they don’t necessarily spook deer. Personally, I’ve had situations where I believe the IR glow spooked a mature buck when I used an IR camera on video mode. I don’t know if this has to do with the IR emitters being on longer or not, but it is something to note. An advantage of the low glow over the other two types of flashes is that you typically get better night photos than the no glow cameras, and you don’t have to worry as much compared to the white flash cameras when it comes to spooking deer.
No Glow: No glow cameras don’t produce any visible light when taking night pictures. There is an advantage to this and a disadvantage. The downside is that traditionally they don’t take as good of pictures at night, but the upside is that with the improving technology in cameras, they still take decent night pictures, and you don’t have to worry one bit about spooking deer. An added benefit you may want to consider is that these trail cameras are far less likely to get stolen by any unwanted trespasser who may be lurking in the dark. If they get their picture taken, there will be no white or red flash to warn them.
4. Battery Life
Resting Capacity vs. Functional Use.
5. Detection range
- Detection distance is dependent on the overall circuitry and sensitivity of the PIR sensor
- Detection angle is greatly affected by the Fresnel lens design
- Detection angle becomes critical when working with the camera’s trigger speed.
6. Flash Range
7. Trigger Delay
8. Recovery Time
9. Camera Modes.
10. Warranty
All Exodus trail cameras are built to stand the test of time, but in case they don't, every camera we sell is covered by a 5 year manufacturing warranty from date of purchase, in addition to a 5 Year Theft and Accidental Damage warranty.
During that time period, if any failures occur due to manufacturing we will repair or replace your camera with the same model. If the same model is not available, we'll substitute another model at equal value or credit of the original purchase value. Replacements will carry out the balance of the remaining original warranty period. Policies are non-transferable and intended for original purchaser.

Thanks for the primer. I would respectfully suggest that you should have had an ELEVENTH point: Communication methods, i.e. wifi, Bluetooth, cell account requirements. Is the imagery only accessible via the SD card? Is the imagery accessible via wifi or Bluetooth, or do you have to set up a cellular account for the camera. For me, these issues are perhaps the most important. Steve
@johnbasiglone3075
@johnbasiglone3075 2 жыл бұрын
Steve, I completely agree with you. My wife and I retired last year, sold our home in the country and fled Commiefornia. We re-settled in the land of Dixie, a way down South in the land of cotton. I am 62 years of age and my hunting years are somewhat numbered. The one area I intend to hunt is about 90 miles from my home and I can not go back and forth every day, every other day to check my trail camera. With my Toyota Tundra, gas alone would be $40.00 round trip to check those trail cameras. Even if it was $20.00, just saving a couple trips would more than pay for an upgrade to decent cellular camera and the subscription fee. In this day and age, being able to have quick access to the camera images is the most important factor to us folks that do not have a farm, ranch or cherry-patch to shoot deer from. If one intends to use a trail camera, it does not make sense to not have a cellular camera. Just going in and out of the area to check the SD card only increases the chances of blowing the area out with your presence. Maybe the deer did not notice your scent, noise or mug on one trip out, but the more you are there, the more sign of your presence you are going to leave behind.

I believe mega pixels is one of those marketing gimmicks, especially in phones. When I bought a digital camera about 10 yrs ago the salesperson at Circuit City told me that anything over about 12 mp (and it may have been 8 mp) is overkill and does not necessarily produce better photos.

@MrBurdinekl Жыл бұрын
I can't give a definitive answer, but I'm thinking that while white flash will indeed be more noticeable to wildlife, it will give color pics at night (albeit probably odd looking color because it is night) AND animals are use to lightening flashes so it may not spook them so bad. ??? I wonder which flash uses the most battery life. Just thinking our loud.

Great points on some myths that I personally had wrong... thanks... I do have a question on shadows and unclear pics mainly on field edges occurring in transition times (early mornings and late evenings) where some cameras tend to perform with more clarity than others.. . so with that said, is this more a result of "settings" or is this a matter of something else I could be doing (specifically with my Exodus cameras) to improve clarity during this crucial times of the day...
@chadsyl23
@chadsyl23 4 жыл бұрын
MrJimbo1212 great question. With transition photos/videos you are relying 100% on the image sensor and lens for the quality of data. With that said the light metering on the camera has everything to do with when your camera will take transition photos/video. If the camera is in a shaded area, that will happen earlier in the eve and later in the morning. If the camera is direct sunlight it’s the opposite. So long story short, it’s more about the camera placement and environment than the camera settings. We’ll do a video on this topic, it’s a solid topic.

The best indicator is always the reviews. Make sure you read all the bad ones. I have bought quite a few different trail cams from varying companies at varying prices. More money definitely does not make a camera last any longer. Some very cheap cameras work better than some expensive ones. But night shots are certainly not equal nor are they as good as advertised on most cameras. Battery life always depends on number of photos or movie clips. The worst thing about trail cams is water damage. Buy a cheap insurance policy when you can. At least you can get your purchase price back if it craps out before the warranty.

I have 6 Renders and am pleased with them. But buyers should be aware that there is a monthly data charge + $7 monthly line charge per camera. I am presently on $30 per month data plan which is plenty for pics and probably 30-40 videos of 30-45 sec. My cost is $72 per month: 6 cameras x $7 monthly line charges + $30 = $72 per month.

Never ever get a highwild trail camera. I bought one last year, and ended up having to have it replaced 4 times. IN the case of all five of the devices, they all failed to even power up. I dont even know if they still in business. I ended up after a 4 month odyssy with highwild getting a refund, and they didn't even want the camera back. Apparently those devices aren't cameras, but rather just battery holders with a bunch of led lights on them.

why don't they make trail cameras that can use rechargeable double a batteries, so I bought one that takes 8 double AA so if you use rechargeable that's only 1.2 volts each battery compared to regular alkaline which is 1.5 volts, so a total of 12 volts with regular and 9.6 with rechargeable, why not make a extra 2 battery slots so you can use the rechargeable 10 batteries 1.2 X 10 = 12, that has the total voltage as with the alkaline batteries 8 X 1.5 =12, with the trail camera I got low battery is only 9 volts then the camera wont take infrared photos at night because too much power for the IR light mine has like 16 led

The quality of specs they offer not even 720p, photos are NOT 16mp nor even 4mp just a screenshot of what’s being grabbed from that 720i (interpolated/ upscaled) image. Think of these details which I mentioned when you buy one of these or else you’d be very disappointed. Besides of all, Wifi only works under 10m or 32ft distance. Sensor/s misses the action, leaves in a wind triggers the camera/s. Frustratingly cheap items made in China (yet again) and shamefully sold in Amazon! 😣

Can’t build anything in American anymore and make any money. I would love everything to be American made, but a $100 item would cost $400 for the exact same thing if made in America. I’m sure if everyone was willing to pay $400 versus $100 we would see more American made items.

I'm a woman who lives alone on 10 acres and I have a peeping tom on my property, can anyone recommend a great trail cam??? So I can take footage and capture his face and body? I just purchased solar motion lights, night vision goggles and have my dad in town to help.

I’ve purchased several cameras. All of them take thousands of photos of nothing. Apparently a fucking blade of grass 50’ away moves one quarter inch in the wind and the camera captures that. What a pain in the ass.

Never having used a trail cam kzfaq.infoUgkx2sTDdZXomuxedMg_HothfjSXjR3rpPkA before, I was very impressed with the quality of the images and videos. The sensitivity of the camera can be adjusted as well as the length of video recordings. Once I found the sweet spot, I was getting great clips of deer and other animals almost every day. I was worried about battery life but have been running off the same 4 aa batteries for over a month. The SD card is easy to remove and connect to a computer. I have a Mac, and the AVI files open natively in QuickTime and are easy to save and share. This is a great, budget-friendly trail cam.

Very good info but it still isn't helping me find one that works. I have bought three different ones and sent back three different ones. I want a cell model with wide angle NOT from Jina, and I don't care about the price until it's over $200, then I stop. PROBLEM is that there are SO MANY and MOST are from Jina. I don't care about pixels or shutter speed so much, I just want to catch the vandals up on the street. Damn it.
