I was watching him play this tournament live (on TV), I believe he actually had the same thing happen earlier in the tournament as well. He broke his shoelaces because, when he’d slide on the hard court, he was dragging his foot in a way that the side of his shoe was rubbing/sliding against the ground. He apparently didn’t prepare for this and had too few pairs of shoes.
