I remember when I was a young boy swimming in the power station outlet in Poole Harbour. Water used to cool the turbines of the power station pumped out into the harbour. We used to dive down with a mask and hold on to a rock so that the current didn’t push us out. The force of it was powerful. The amazing thing was that the checker bass would swim just in front of us and only move out of the way if you tried to reach out to grab the. It was amazing how unconcerned they were and how close they came. You could see them holding in the flow just out of reach and actually watching you. Amazing.

When we would leave Glasgow and head up north to Caithness for a weeks fishing holiday 8 of us we would be fishing for wild brownies and sea trout on the estuaries and for some strange reason we started catching this strange fish that we had never seen before in the beginning we thought it was sea trout but it never fought like one and we just let them go back into the sea if for a minute we new what kind of fish they were we would have chapped a few on the head and had them for our supper but really enjoying your videos as the saying goes you learn something every day .

I would take most of those "bass get spooked" stories with a pinch of sea salt. Two schoolie bass I pulled in last week, were caught in a busy estuary, with seals patrolling the channels. It was the gulls and seals that put me on to the spot in the first place.

No.1 I don't follow the birds, they seem to follow me.☹️ No.2 if they can be caught in darkness then we should be able to catch in chocolate? No.3 Ive compared bass to my chub fishing and chub spook very easily and I thought the same of bass but my best bass this year was caught close to a swimmer! No.10 this is my chin scratching dilemma. Ive fished with two experienced anglers this year and neither use a leader, they say any knot is a weak link, it attracts weed and causes friction through the rings, I just don't catch enough bass to do a back to back comparison. Great video and really helpful for us novices Matt. 👍
@SaltwaterAngler

No 1. LOL Great reply - full marks you have been paying attention ! There are some negatives about leaders but ive lost two many bass when the braid rubs on the rocks.A rubbing leader would help here - Very mark specific. Id be interested in the type of rock marks not fluro users use. Im seeing evidence that bass dont spook in busier areas Top commenting there thanks we can learn a lot from freshwater anglers like for chub and Perch, salmon and sea trout in game angling too

"Wind knots" Quite right they have nothing to do with the wind ! They are caused by tension or "lack of" on the line, they happen when you change from a light lure "say 10g" to a heaver one "say 25g". So when changing to a heaver lure build up the cast with a short one first maybe 20m, then 25m then 30m & so on. don't try to hit the horizon with the first cast. Alternatively when you decide this is the last cast with this lure move your hand up the rod & wind the line through your hand to add tension before changing lures. This will cure 95% of your wind knots.

High, ?? A'hhhhhhh, did i hear a bleep or two 🤔😳 ?? Just wondering what you think or perhaps suggest ? Shimano sedona 2000 or ABU garcia 2000sh I think as you have said before, nice size reels, I don't think there is to much difference in price, I think the main thing is build quality & workmanship, is retrieve ratio/ ratios that critical ?? Interested in your thinking 🤔 on this one. Cheers Les.
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Leslie small spool reels like this with a slower retrieve can almost force us to retrieve with more finesse. Using the feel of the rod tip to know what the rod tip is doing . As we talked before it’s so hard to show and needs to be felt. I dont know about the Abu but the shimano I can vouch for ,good price point second hand too . The main advantage of a smaller reel for me is controlling the drag with the same hand. These are small at 2000 size and a decent fish landed will be quite an achievement and great fun, you can’t just winch them in !!!
@SaltwaterAngler
@SaltwaterAngler 2 жыл бұрын

@@Mister0String well, granted ledgering baits is the most common technique but other combinations of spinners and twitched baits or moving float techniques can all catch. I've been using the moving float a lot this season and even had a bass try to take the float itself. I always seek out low tides.... the old rule of thumb ... last 2 hours of the drop and first 2 hours of the flood... and I tend to not fish higher states of the tide... are there some marks which could produce at all, or more-so around mid to high tide? I don't think noise spooks predatory fish. Just the opposite. All that vibration and sound may draw them in looking for distressed or injured prey. Not a Bass expert but my most popular lure (with the Pike) pushes plenty of water and makes plenty of noise. Its a diving lure and I like clattering the bottom and pausing it and then reel fast, then slow, varying my retrieve and causing plenty of disturbance. All fish are curious, especially predators. Noise equals a potential meal.
