My interest in gear increases when I'm at a creative standstill, like a pendulum. If I'm writing, gigging, recording, learning new things, going to shows, etc I'm less invested in the minutiae of gear. The moment I'm focusing less on the art itself, I'm reading about speaker dust caps, zinc vs nickel hardware, and pining for that Custom Shop Telecaster I saw on social media. Advice- swing the pendulum back towards doing, learning, making, experiencing.

My GAS cure was building a guitar myself. Whether you do a parts caster, a kit, or (the way I did it) build from scratch, you very quickly realize that you have so much control over the guitar that the likely less-than-factory quality finish is made up for by the perfect specs. The more time you spend on making the guitar, the more connection you'll have with it. I have some nice guitars I really like. But when I had to pick just *one* to take with me when I moved out temporarily for a few months, I picked the one I built and it wasn't really even a thought.

As a Tele/P Bass guy one thing I love about first generation P basses (single coils) and Esquires and Teles is how simple the pickguard swaps are and how much it makes it look like a "new" guitar/bass. Sometimes it's enough to just give your old faithful instruments a new look for a little bit. For my P basses and my Tele I have multiple guards that I can swap out (or on my CS 55 P run it with no guard at all) just to change the look a bit.

GAS victims need a national organization like "GA" (guitars anonymous) so we can support each other, like attempting to dissuade a player from getting another instrument (just for looks) and then support them after they do get the new gear so they don't feel bad. Like you 2 guys. Lol

Reverb used prices and constant new guitar price increases in general have definitely cooled things for me. If I'm "shopping" online and there's any hesitation at all I use that as a chance to stop and evaluate my current collection, which usually leads me back to playing one and letting the moment pass. For a little while at least.

Best cure for gas is to sell all those guitars sitting around and buy the one expensive guitar you want. I think most players would already have their "dream guitar" if they'd stop spending money on a bunch of "almost dream" guitars. Trust me, I'm just as guilty of this as the next guy but I'm breaking away from the whole "It's a good deal" mindset into more of the "What will I use this for?" mindset, which does curb a lot of purchases. Sure that Maz18 might be $1000 but when am I actually going to find time to play it?

Awesome and very helpful video! Each point super valid and useful. I follow a lot of these myself and it does aid in calming the gas within me (that statement sounds weird and funny at the same time haha). I'd like to add one more and say that learning a new song can also aid in that too; it's not a new guitar, but it is something new that you're doing on the instrument.

With regard to the internet Baxter is right on the money. A while ago I stopped looking at Sweetwater and Reverb and all the rest. Started taking some lessons and playing more. Now after over 30 years of playing, I've finally started jamming in the basement with other people instead of a boom box or Apple Music. It is way fun. Hoping to get enough songs down so we can have a party and play for our families and friends. And I have found that all I really need is a Stratocaster and a Princeton Reverb. For now I'm keeping everything though cuz it just looks cool in my basement

up until recent years I had the basic intermediate rig we all know and love. I cleaned house to start my collection during quarantine with one rule: don't buy 2 pieces of gear that sound the same. I think for me at least it's a good disciplinary measure to keep me from buying 3-4 of the same guitar in different colors. and amp wise its diversified my sound so much that effects pedals are a thing of past. it's funny how with that rule I can afford to buy real fenders and Gibsons and boutique amps and somehow at the end of the year I spent less than on my hoarding of mid priced gear.

All good points (although getting back into a band actually saw me buying new gear!) - but #10 is definitely the simplest and most effective! 🤣I didn't buy a new guitar for probably 20 years. Then I started watching KZfaq guitar channels and I suddenly "needed" new ones!...😉I'm not complaining though - I really enjoy all the guitars I've bought. The last few years have been something of a "golden age" for high-quality more affordable instruments, making it an ideal time for trying different types without breaking the bank. However, the recent price rises (not just in guitars) have forced me to think twice about buying another for quite a while. I'd also add a #11 to the list: don't think getting a new guitar will magically make you a better player. Odds on - it won't, sadly...

I recently moved to a Velcro less board allowing quick changes to my pedals and gear, sort of a less static approach. Going Velcro less will open up a whole new world since your guitars sound way different pending your pedal configurations. Loopers and drum machines are really cool since you focus more on the practicing and sound, than the equipment. Most my guitars keep moving up in price so it's harder to sell them for now. If you do buy gear try to buy it used at a reduced price or on sale.

I've found that having some gear tucked away (guitar, pedals, amps) that I don't see for a while can really help out. Basically swapping out the whole "studio" (practice area in my basement) every now and then really helps out. Of course, this method necessitates having a lot of gear in the first place... so... maybe not the best approach

i was already a very minimalist person when i got into guitar so i made sure that my first would have everything i wanted and it'd never be something i'd look at and think about what i "really want" someday. it cost a bit more upfront but was cheaper than buying it later at a higher price on top of some inexpensive compromise. there's also that saying, "beware the man with one gun- he knows how to use it". i'd rather the kind of artist you associate with a "signature" guitar/look than just another guy with an impractically massive collection of instruments they never get around to playing.

Really feel that number nine. I've noticed far too many times that I will go out and buy a new six string whenever something looks shiny and lovely, even though I play bass when I play out (even though I haven't since covid hit. it is a sadness) and I feel pretty much satisfied with my Japanese p Bass clone.I have to add that for me number eleven is take up woodworking. Sure you'll be scouring craigslist for beat up old furniture in hopes of finding a mahogany table that you can make a one piece body out of but you won't be hanging out in the guitar shops all the time until you go looking for pickups and tuning machines.

I had GAS real bad and at one point I had at least a dozen guitars. I play almost exclusively metal and yet, every guitar was set up for E standard. I had to have a binder to write down when I changed strings last on each guitar and I only really had one great guitar the rest were ok or good at best. I decided It was important to me to be a player more than a collector so I set a goal to turn my 12 or so ok to good guitars into a few great guitars. Now I have 2 keisels, a MiJ ESP horizon, and an LTD Mh-1000 Evertune as my backup/ beater and still have the same 2 acoustics. I'd like to flip the low end fender acoustics into a low to mid Taylor acoustic.... but that's not a priority. So I'm now at less than half of what I once had and I play them all at least an hour a week each. So how did I cure GaS? 1. Focused on the type of guitar I need to play how I want. For me its a twin humbucker 24 fret doublecut guitar 2. Got rid of all my guitars that I didn't Love and kept selling 2 to buy one until I ended up with a core of great guitars. 3. Got focused on my playing over what gear I was playing. Everything I own is good enough on it's own to do everything I need, with the exeption of I can't use my THR5 practice amp to do a show but I've got my 100w amp for that. cutting way back on quantity and focusing on quality, I enjoy doing the guitar maintenance again.

Stop watching gear reviews, KZfaq is a double edged sword in that we are all guilty of wanting the latest gear just because some reviewers claim that it is the best ever! Having fallen victim to this form of GAS, i only watch reviews of gear that is of interest, and by a reviewer that has bought the item, and not been gifted it by the manufacturer. Once you have GAS, only you can control it, be content with what you have todays must buys are no better than the ones you already have.

But I’ve probably only taken it out of its case twice in the last three or four years. I’ve been thinking about selling it for something I’ll play more, but I’m afraid I’ll regret it! What do you guys think?

I wont be done until I finally get my hands on an Ibanez SRC6. I’ve been looking for years. I’d literally trade half of what I own for one of them. Given it’s in good shape of course.

I've been GASsed out recently, thought it might be a lingering effect of Covid, was going to ask my doctor about it. Then I bought an ES-339 and a Les Paul. NOW I'm done .....

I'm typically a Strat player and my buying and selling seems to always revolve around trying to find a humbucker guitar that I can dig for more than a couple weeks. Done les Pauls, 335s, PRSs, just so many great instruments that I haven't been able to connect to so I keep trying new stuff and selling the old.

Dude same here! Just got my first LP Special with P90s and I think it may be the keeper. P90s or mini-humbuckers may do it for you

nr : 11 = just be satisfied with what you have at the moment and remember : to make good music you better focus on practise and study you're musictheory , this will make you a better guitarplayer , it's not in the gear but in you're hands , heart and head ( displine and determination ) .

You are 100% correct. However, practice and discipline are boring. Spending money and constantly clinking the fedx tracking link to watch my new piece of worthless junk slowly crawl from Indiana to California gives my life meaning. :D

Just realised Jonathan said “put some Lemon Oil on the fretboard”. I thought he put some Luminol on the fretboard which made me wonder what his friend had been doing with it?!?! 🤣😆🤣

On point number 2, my gas was pretty much cured by selling stuff I wasn't playing. If this guitar that I just wanted so badly at the time is now this thing I can't seem to get rid of (selling stuff sucks), it can very easily happen with the next guitar. So chose wisely. I went from about 10 down to 5 (including one acoustic and one bass) and I have had zero desire for a new/different guitar for a couple of years now.

I mostly just build my own now. For about 1K I can can have an amazing instrument that plays as well as anything I could buy.

Agree about playing with others. Gets you away from browsing for new guitars and focused on what it takes to collaborate with others.

I have sold, traded, swapped for other guitars, amps and gear but unfortunately I also rescue, rebuild or Build/assemble anywhere from 3 to 6 instuments a year that I offer at cost or as donation when possible to Kids, Seniors, Vets and Charities.

I tried curing my GAS by branching out into other instruments. I wanted a Jaguar but a friend was selling some instruments so I bought two trumpets, a clarinet, and a violin. Didn’t think about another guitar for six months. The Jaguar started creeping into my head again so I bought a Squier Affinity P Bass thinking that would help. Nope… all it’s made me do is want another bass. I don’t know, maybe I should buy a tuba? Will that help?

I bought a slide ring and put some pure nickel strings on my acoustic/electric. GAS averted for the time being.

4:17 is exactly what happened to me last weekend when i went to my nearest GC. All the guitars had sharp fret edges, horrible intonation and fret buzzing all over the neck. I was so uninspired and felt really crappy about guitars in general. Then came back home to my CV Strat and felt better.
