AJ and the BABYMETAL podcast guys get together at Atlanta's biggest and longest running scifi/fantasy fan convention for the con's first ever BABYMETAL panel. Thanks to all at the con, the Silk Road Track, and Beth in particular for making this happen, to the audience for showing up in (unexpected!) numbers, and to Roberto (www.tentaclecouple.com) for shooting the video. Apologies for having to strip the music out: couldn't get past the copyright infringement issues.
We had--as you'll see--a lot of fun, and hope to do something like it again some day.
The audio is also up at the Podcast's KZfaq site: • Ten BABYMETAL Years - ...

I already listened to the Podcast version, but I'll watch this to see all of your faces. It really seemed like a great panel. Just one correction, other than a few minor date issues. I understand how there could be some confusion, but that's not Mikiko in the 'Megitsune' music video. The woman performing the fan dance during the breakdown is Chidori Yakumo. The performers pretending to play the traditional Japanese instruments are dancers with the Movement Design group. She is their director and choreographer. Mikiko did all of the other choreography, including the addition (per Yui's request) of the Windmill/Electric fan headbanging.

A great primer, and lovely to see you all enjoying yourselves, and it seems the audience had a good time as well! Perhaps the stars will align one day where we will be able to gather in person (possibly in Japan for a show!) and have a get-together!

The auto-generated English subtitles have some fun mistakes like: Moa Kikuchi got transcribed as: Monkey Gucci. :-)

My only complaint here is that I had to crank up the volume to hear it well...and I'm just so glad that KZfaq didn't interrupt with some ads because it would've blasted the place

Not what kind of audio mixing console you guys are using, but you could eliminate that super annoying ringing by repositioning the speakers so that the panelists mics are behind the face of the cabinets, and or using an parametric or graphic EQ to cut the offending frequencies which are in the 2k-2.5k range. Then you can use a little more gas to raise the volume before you get into trouble with feedback. Sorry, I know it is post event, but I can’t help it. Have been an engineer for way too long. Next time you do another panel, please reach out to me and I’ll handle your audio/visual for free. - Eric in Sacto.

Just finished watching this and enjoyed the subject matter, the panel member comments, the questions from the audience, the video clips ... all of it! However, as was mentioned several times, the audio levels were troublesome. Some of the content was at a reasonable level but other parts were so low that even the closed-caption software was either coming up with bizarre (and sometimes amusing) "translations" or just went blank because the levels were so low that even the software couldn't make it out. One commenter, who sounded like he knew something about P.A. systems, offered to work for free on the next panel discussion sound setup and that seems like something that would be reasonable to look into! But, except for that one complaint, I thought this was a great video! Thanks for posting!

Yeah, the sound in the space was fine, we just hadn’t really prepared to record it so it was all on the fly

One thing I forgot in my previous post: Toward the end of the video, panel members were mentioning other bands that they had run across that they would recommend. One member mentioned Band-Maid which I also discovered. I like them, too. And the two bands that Professor Hartley mentioned are now on my "to-do" list to check out. But there is one other band that I ran across that just blew me away - an all-female Japanese band named Lovebites. All five members (bass, drums, singer, and two guitarists) are excellent musicians. Both guitarists are shredders and could hold their own in the Kami Band! One of the guitarists is also a classical pianist. Look them up on KZfaq if you've never heard them. They're awesome. Once recent development is that the bass player (one of two founding members) left the band a couple of months ago, I believe she said for personal, family-related reasons. So, currently, the band is on hiatus deciding how to go forward.

32:28 Voice Of Baceprot might be a good example. They are maybe more accepted by the metal community than their countrymen.

The Con advised double masking. 50,000 people in 5 hotels. I truth, I appreciated the caution.

BM is a most interesting project. Normally this kind of "artifical" bands don't stick around very long, but BM lasts and is still growing. There are some reasons for this, most importantly the great music, of course, and the positive feelings it can give you. That being said, from what I saw on KZfaq I enjoyed the band much more with Yui instead of "the avengers". It might be their youth (children on stage, who does not feel happy seeing them?) , might be the shadows of Yui leaving BM, might be the lower quality of some newer live acts (sets, sounds, fan-reactions), but my point is, I kind of lose contact to BM. And I don't want to! 😮

I felt the same way, but I think the more you live with the later material, the more you appreciate it. I'm used to the idea that the band has evolved away from where they started, now, and am keen to see what comes next.
