As someone born and raised in Latin America, this song is one the best examples of respect and love for what you are trying to honor or tribute. You can feel perfectly connected with it and recognize the influences but still sounds metal. The producers did not need to use the most commercial face of urban latin music and the execution is flawless.

I lived in Andalucia, Spain, for many years and watched many flamenco dances. Babymetal perform some of the Sevillana moves that are used there during this performance, though the music clearly utilises flamenco as well as some Ricky Martin pop. ¡Que duende¡ from the ladies as always!

This was a great one! Thanks to Carlos for sharing his time with all of us. With the world tour approach of this album, reactions from people who are grounded in the cultures being borrowed from are incredibly interesting. I've been cultivating a theory about Metal Galaxy having a secondary purpose apart from the overt world tour theme; to replace the more ecclectic songs on the first album that they've outgrown. If Metal Galaxy had instead been more like Metal Resistance, then they wouldn't have much left in their regular performance repertoire that stood out a great deal. Relatively straightforward (for Babymetal) western-japanese fusion metal would have been most of what was left. In that light I see Da Da Dance and this song as mature successors to Iine and Uki Uki Midnight. Dancey, light-hearted songs about having an unreasonably good time.

Why do you do this to me AJ? I was happily going back to enjoying Babymetal without having to think too much. But, you stopped that in its tracks! By analyzing a song that is almost lightweight lyrically (and because of that I have largely ignored), you have shown my ignorance of World Music. I had never considered that there are different genres (Latin/Spanish) within different genres (Kawaii Metal). Your guest in the video took viewers on a world tour of different spheres of Latin influence; from populist (Ricky Martin and the World Cup) to the introduction of Spanish Flamenco. As I am from half a world away from these influences it was a real eye-opener because here in Australia we don't hear much Latin or Spanish music and only a little more Asian influenced music. This is why this video of you and your guest is important. It allows people, like myself, greater understanding of different music. I love what you have done here bringing in another academic expert from a different expertise. However, I felt a little under-prepared for today's class. Tutorial notes would be awesome (kidding). All jokes aside, thankyou for this video and I look forward to continuing my journey through your videos.

The latino flavor is definitively on this song like only Babymetal can do it. I like the reference to Los Fabulosos Cadillacs - Matador, is a legendary latinoamerican band with many hits and they're an iconic band for many decades, i'm not entirely sure if i can relate that song with NNB but songs like PA PA YA! definitely got the Fabulosos vibe because of the ska rhythm. There is a song from Raul Di Blasio called "Tico Tico" but i don't think is related anyway besides the name itself. So you already know there's a 1 hour tico tico ting vid here on YT? Man, Moa simps can went so far simping lol Ricky Martin - La Copa De La Vida (The Cup Of Life) is the official song from FIFA World Cup France '98, and yeah it got that vibe too. Sadly they didn't played this song at 10 Babymetal Budokan :( Once again thanks for sharing this in depth analysis. 🦊🤘

I always had identified that it had salsa and flamenco elements thrown there at random but now that Carlos mentioned it, it has a clear reminiscence of Shakira and Ricky Martin around, the music for the World Cups. And it makes total sense. In some recent blog post from Koba he was speaking about how he enjoys this football competitions that unite countries from all over the world and was comparing them to metal, mentioning that metal bands from different countries worked the same way with different styles that represents their nations. So yes, it looks pretty obvious now that he probably discovered Shakira in the 2010 World Cup, and grew up as a youngster with La Copa de la Vida from Ricky Martin and threw it there to Night Night Burn to see if it worked xD

Nice review of the song. This is the song that first jumped out at me from the 3rd album. I felt it was such a great blend of music. Really showing off the Babymetal style. We blend genres, now listen to a master piece of blends. Then when I heard Moa getting to show off some rhythmic vocals and harmonies it won me over. Su is front and center but I have really gotten to feel like Moa is a Babymetal secret weapon on the 3rd album. Almost like every time you think they've done all they're gonna do with her on a song. Suddenly Moa is front and center. I think it goes to show how Su and Moa have grown together. I recently saw an interview where Moa talked about her and Su going out to do karaoke together. Imagine being there for that. This was back in their SG days. So not as famous yet but I wonder how many folks can say they were there for that ?

The costumes of the Kami Band have always signaled that they are not human, whether gods or spirits of venerated dead people, they were summoned to this mortal plane by Kitsune-sama to support the mission of Babymetal. So whether it's the older "corpse paint" makeup in white (possibly burial) robes, or the current face masks, on stage they continue to represent kamis. Practical and performative can coexist.

⚡ 💕 / 🌃 🌌 🔥 This is great. You're batting a thousand with the special guests. Their insights are always really interesting. 'Night Night Burn!' is a song that really flew under the radar. It would probably have received more attention if it had a guest artist who was well known from a Latin genre. Just one live performance of this one so far (The first LEGEND - METAL GALAXY concert on January 25th, 2020). As you noted, this one has actually been in the works since the 'Megitsune' days. Apparently it changed a lot from the earliest versions before it was finally released. The "Latinization" seems to have been pretty recent. Lots of Moa backup vocals on this song, which is also great. It's a shame the BABYMETAL concerts scheduled for June 2020 in Madrid and Barcelona were cancelled. This song would have brought down the roof. Some Japanese fans have pointed out that "Night Night Burn" sounds like 「いない、いない、バァ〜」("inai, inai, baa"") which is like "peekaboo!" In English.

Thanks! Yes, it's hard to imagine what this song would be without the Latin element which feels so central. As I said to Flugelhornold man, I'm not sure what the inai inai bah reading adds to the song, esp. since it doesn't appear in the choreography. Totally agree that this song performed in Spain would have been amazing.
@zerozeroKatuhisa
@zerozeroKatuhisa 3 жыл бұрын
@@AndrewHartley In modern Japanese "inai inai baa" only means peekaboo. I think there is a hint from the origin. In the legend of Amano-Iwato, the sun god that happened hides behind the rock door and sunny day is gone and only night. Many troubled gods continued to dance in front of the door until dawn, causing the rock door to open.The sun god, who was worried about dancing, finally opened the rock door. Hidden(inai), hidden(inai), appeared(baa). The night of frenzy continues to dance until it appears. That ephemeral and dangerous situation happens around you anytime, anywhere.

Sidenote on the perfomance history of this song: Babymetal closed its 2023 World Tour with two concerts in Barcelona and Madrid, on the 10th and 11th December respectivly. Both times, Night Night Burn was performed to the delight of the Spanish audiences. To my knowledge, these were the only performances during the over 90 shows of the tour; clearly an hommage to the country that contributed so much to the Latinamerican culture the song is connected to, not least the language.

As always, a very interesting discussion. One thing about this song was that it has (in some form or another) been around for a long time. And, yet, I really see it as one of the foundational songs of the entire DUO concept of Babymetal on Metal Galaxy. And, that is because of how the vocal interaction between Moa and Su is utilized. Not so much in the Tico Tico section (which is similar to the Rap section in Da Da Dance)... although, obviously, that is used to highlight Moa (and I'm not sure how Babymetal would have approached it with Yui still in the group)... but in the fast trade off of lyrics in the second stanza (the aza mata notte/chotto matte section). But, upon further listening to the studio version... the entire song is one big trade off of lyrics between Su and Moa. Could it have worked with Moa/Yui responding in tandem to Su? Maybe. But, to me, this song really hit upon the duo concept in a way that no other song on Metal Galaxy really does (Maybe BBAB as well). And, I wonder if it is one of the possible paths they are exploring for the future. Overall, another great song.

This was great! Professor Cruz really added value and insights to the discussion, not only musically and culturally, but also with his background on street performances. F.ex., his comment on the three piece lineup beeing able "to cover many angles" put something into a nutshell that we all saw and Koba wrestled with since Yui left: That Su and Moa, for all their talent and hard work, just weren't able to do it on their own. Now we understand better why that didn't work as well as the original lineup. Also, I loved his insistence that the shimmy is more about joy than seduction (although there can be one within the other😀). Gloria Estefan and Shakira 🥰😍🤩Gloria's "Hoy" (engl. title "Wrapped") was on repeat with me for quite some time. And as a German, I have affectionate memories of Shakira and Wyclef Jean performing "Hips don't lie" live at the closing ceremony of the 2006 World Cup Finals, hosted in Germany. So his football references made a lot of sense to me. With both artists, I very much prefer the Spanish versions of their songs, even though I do not speak the language. Something in the flow of the song changes for the better; in Shakira's case I even think her voice improves. Last, but not least, the reference to death/el muerte was interesting. Either this is a very common theme in all cultures because we all must die sooner or later, or Koba is delibertately looking for this stuff because it fits into the BM lore. As always, professor, thank you for the time and work you put into these lectures. Your decision to bring in external expertise really put this already great series on afterburner. See you!🦊
