The Welsh dragon isn’t from the romans, but from the story of the battle of the red and white dragon, also the welsh language was nearly eradicated by the punishment of children speaking it with the “Welsh not” and the burning of books ect by the English government, is is a pretty MAJOR fact in the history of Wales that should have been included.
@taffyducks544

Some experts are actually starting to believe that the story is actually referring to the House of Bran vs House of Aberffraw...which became the kingdoms of Glamorgan and Gwent under House Bran and Gwynedd Coming under House Aberffraw. They believe it was then co-opted by later Anglo and Norman scholars to justify and better explain the English-Welsh conflict. You see, the Royal Houses of South Wales used a Golden Dragon on a field of white, whereas The Northern House used a Red Dragon. House of Bran was founded by Caratacus, whereas Aberffraw was founded by Cunedda. I too subscribe to this theory more so than the Anglo vs Briton scenario. As for all intensify purposes, the conflict between English and Welsh before 1000ad wasn't that regular.

That's the popular narrative but in fact the WN had a minimal effect on the Welsh language. The main reason was mass immigration of English workers and the failure of either them or their descendants to learn Welsh.

As a person with English, Irish, Welsh and Maltese Ancestry...Wales is by far one of the most under appreciated countries on the planet. They have punched well above their weight for centuries. A bit soul destroying to hear the same old false narrative about the Saxons pushing the Welsh into Wales through Conquest, which isn't true. Wales was always the power base of the Britons, due to its Topography. What would become known as England was used more as a trade center than for governance.

Why no mention of Owain Glyndwr who unified Wales formed a Welsh university, set Welsh Laws and invaded England as far as Oxford. Owain was far more successful than William Wallace (Brave heart). He is seen as a national hero and freedom fighter in the country. His statue can be seen in every major town in Wales and his flag flown across the land.

From the US, spent a couple months in rural /coastal Wales a few years better. Wanted to learn the language but it was just to hard to actually get good enough to use-not an option with most language courses. However-I did manage to learn how the letters in the alphabet were pronounced, and that took like 10 minutes, you could have done that lol Hearing you pronounce dd as d every time was funny. It’s easy, except for ll. I’m convinced it’s the trick they put in to see if you’re Welsh. Loved the video and hearing lots of pop culture type facts.

I would take a lot of what he says here with a good pinch on salt. He’s obviously an outsider who’s done a Google search and repeating what he found. It’s not like a definitive fact list. The dragon origins for example, the two theories are the one he mentioned (copying romans) and the other is based off medieval Welsh literature which is itself presumed to be based on old oral traditions that talks about the magician (possible god) Myrddin* (a strong contender for the basis of Merlin from Arthurian legend) who woke the red dragon (representing Cymru) to help fight off the Saxons. Who were themselves represented by a white dragon. The two clash and the white dragon is defeated and the red one goes back to sleep under his mountain til the next time we need him. I know which one I’d rather believe. * Could also have been Gwydion fab Dôn from the Mabinogion in earlier versions but changed after the bard Myrddin Wyltt became popularised.

The real descendants of the Romans are the Romance peoples such as the Italians, French, Spaniards, Portuguese and Romanians. There were also enclaves of the Western Roman Empire in the form of the Britto-Roman kingdoms of Gwynedd, Powys, Morgannwg and Rheged. Today they are modern Wales, which in turn is part of Great Britain!

I've never heard ofthis idea of being worthy of enslavement, but Volcae originally was the Germanic word for the Gauls, and later came to mean anyone who was Roman, obviously the Germanic V became a W over time, for example Vinum goes to Wine (cf Walnut - cf Roman nut, Germans didn't have them). Later the Anglo-Saxons used the derivative word Wēalas to refer to Romano-Britons because, well the Britons thought of themselves as Roman, and the Anglo-Saxons thought of the Britons as Roman. The term wouldn't have been applied to Britons in Caledonia who of course had never been Roman. So the correct meaning of Wēalas is Romano-Briton.

I noticed a Corgi but I didn't hear it mentioned. It's Welsh and means "Dwarf Dog". Another person who is unknown in Wales and I've mentioned on here many times is "Tecwyn Roberts". Who? Well he was the man who was in charge of the American space programme from the earliest satellites through the Apollo missions to the moon. He also designed "Mission Control" as we see it during launch missions. The BBC made a documentary about him several years ago. It may have been called "The Welsh Rocket Man". He was from Anglesey. David Edward Hughes demonstrated the ability to send messages without wires 12 years before Marconi. He sent a message to the Royal Society no less, but because he wasn't a scientist and couldn't explain to them probably in mathematics they poo poo'd the whole thing. Many years later they realised their mistake and there is a blue plaque on the Royal Society building commemorating him and a prestigious medal is presented in his name for "Scientific Achievement" I believe. See :- kzfaq.info/get/bejne/abSgiZmV1rHFg6c.html Somebody needs to do a video about the Welsh influence in the development of America. You wouldn't believe what you'd turn up. More impressive than Jack Daniels.😄
