Why a movie has not been made on this great history/story, it has everything for a great script. I am fasinated by Brian Boru since a boy.

Ok, bloody hell, I find too many parallels between Polish & Irish history. In this case both Brian Boru "the Bold" (941-1014) and Bolesław I Chrobry "the Brave" (967-1025) are each others parallels. Both among the greatest Kings in the history of either country, both Warrior kings, both badasses, both won themselves a crown. Bolesław - first King of Poland, Brian - High King of Ireland. Damn :D

Irish history is not looked at much and had the greatest warriors to ever live in earth if they made braveheart about William Wallace they have to make one about Brian boru or around that time I don't understand the Vikings one of the greatest warriors defeated by the Irish that would be a good film

My Grandma was a Kelliher, and the surname Kelliher was first found in County Clare (Irish: An Clár) located on the west coast of Ireland in the province of Munster, where they held a family seat from very ancient times. They "derive their sirname from Ceileachar, son of Donchuan, brother of Brian Borimhe [Boru], the 175th Monarch of Ireland, so Brian Boru could be my Ancestor.🤔

Clearly a historic landmark in history but I can't help thinking it also sowed the seeds of Ireland's misfortunes. It's clear that Brian Boru shook up the political landscape and rocked the boat, setting the scene for regional power struggles that followed among protagonists who would otherwise have been accepting of the High Kingship in the hands of the O'Neills, who were still the dominant clan. And it is that in-fighting between the Irish which left them more vulnerable to predatoryi incursions from abroad. I wonder how history might have unfolded if the Irish kings had all united behind the O'Neills before Henry VIII began to pull the carpet from under their feet.

There is an ancient grave yard, in Co. ARMAGH, TOBEYHOLE , IT is off the Moy Road, I was at it once, very ancient, In that grave yard there is a stone slate slab of Rock lying flat on the ground and inscribed on that stone, is Brian Boru, It is roughly inscribed, The graveyard can be entered by a wee iron gate of an old country lane road. I saw this for myself, is this the true buriel place of Brian Boru, The old song, The Boys of the Country Armagh, states and buried in the heart of her bosom is the ashes of Brian Boru, This graveyard would lie in the heart of Co. This historian needs a history lesson. This was clearly a battle between the Irish and the Norse powers (Vikings) the Norseman rule ended after the Irish victory at the battle of Clontarf. The fact Sitric could call on other Scandinavians for support demonstrates the clear ethnic distinction. Modern day attempts to promote political correctness should never be allowed to influence history. Just because the Vikings were based in Ireland and perhaps born here doesn't mean it was an internal struggle, it was a struggle against increased foreign occupation.

Its all here, the drama, the pathos, the incredible impact this period of time if not the battle itself....The High King Brian, his son Murchada, Gormlada, Sitric, Its the Gaelic Iliad when you think on it....And on Good Friday no less.....One of those who drowns in that tide is Brians grandson, Murchads son Toredelbach.... There is sooo much nuance here....Murchada himself, from whom the surname Murphy supposedly springs, kills in hand to hand combat several Viking champions before succumbing from loss of blood...Brodir in despair when the battle is lost cuts his way to Brians tent and slays him before being himself slain....One of those drowned is Murchadas son, Brians grandson...Just incredible... There are Vikings fighting FOR Brian and Gaels fighting AGAINST him.....Brians daughter is married to Sitric !!! There is a LOT here from which a beautiful tapestry could be woven.... AND, within a hundred tears the Vikings have become Christians...The impact on European, especially Irish history is immense..only the battle of Tara has as much significance.... Im amazed no one has done a movie or series on this period of time, though imho Ridley Scott could do this..He is to my mind, the cinematic heir to David Lean, in terms of Epic sprawl, so to speak Sliante !

I have a serious question for Dr. Elva Johnston: every account I've read of Máel Sechnaill suggests he was alive CC 845, was the one who drowned the Viking Sea King Throgest in the Loch Owel, and was the first High King of Ireland. Is this not true, or is this a different guy than the one in your flow-chart (+1022) 4:12 ?

It's 2020, and I'm still waiting on accurate subtitles. Sometimes the subtitles are so wrong, that it's ridiculous. I understand 90% of it, but occasionally there is a word here or there, where I'm lost on what is said because of the accent. I'm still not sure what Brian broke the monopoly of at 2:16, but I'm pretty sure that it had nothing to do with "email" like the subtitles tell me. IF so, Brian Boru invented email in 1014! A fact that is just as impressive as defeating the Vikings. Who knew? All joking aside, Dr. Johnston has made me interested in reading up on more of early Irish history. The line she said that jumped out at me was that aristicratic women could have been married 3 or 4 times. That kinda blew me away, I always thought divorce was a modern thing. Yeah, I figured marrying your daughter off to the most up and coming member of nobility, was a one time bet, but not in Ireland. Your guy is either upwardly mobile, or he gets divorced for a guy with deeper pockets and more ambition. Haha, nothing is new, we just think it is.

I have to admit that, while I utterly hate war and hate commemorations based on war, I still find this battle very inspiring. It's one of those battles where you really feel that there's one side that's actually evil and in the wrong, in this case Viking oppression of the Irish, and one side that is fighting for what's right, in this case freedom from conquering invaders. The reason why this battle in particular, though, is that it resonates a lot with Irish independence and freedom from British colonialism.

To be fair, Sigurd the Stout(Jarl of the Orkneys who participated in and died at the battle of Clontarf) was forced to convert to Christianity by Olaf Tyggvasson at the end of the 10th century, along with all of his people. I'm sure many of the other Norse and Norse-Gael rulers in Ireland were forced to convert as well. And while they continued to be nominally Christian after Olaf's death for largely political purposes, that wasn't necessarily the case in private. After all, we know that Sigurd flew the raven banner in battle and on his ships, an overt symbol of Óðinn. All I'm saying is that the portrayal of Brian Boru as a Christian king fighting against the Pagans isn't completely ridiculous. Great video though. 👍
