His son was Edmund the Exile and his son was Edgar Aetheling who was made king after Harold Godwinsons death at Hastings, but was not supported or corinated and betrayed by the church leaders, allowing William of Normandy to reign. The same thing happened a few times in English history. Richard III had a supposed ally at the Battle of Bosworth who watched from the sidelines as a neutral, before deciding to fight against Richard when the tide turned in Henry Tudor's favour.

Man I only just stumbled upon your channel today and you've got me hooked with the way you layout the videos and explain in great details the movements and motion of these once great army's of old - a favour I wish to ask - please could you cover the battle of constantinople where the varangian guard backed by Anglo-Saxon warriors were defending the byzantine empire < one of my favourite battles in history > the varangian guard were absolute beasts on the battlefield and some of the most highly paid mercenary units of their time while still holding the rite and ritual of their berserker ancestors

This time period would make a most excellent hbo show. It has everything. Badass Viking warlords with awesome names, inept English king who flees in exile to Normandy, conniving second wife queen who alienates and splits the royal family apart, kickass warrior princes of Aethelred - including one Chosen One who dies at the worst possible time and another who takes his mantle in Ironside. Backstabbing and doublecrossing vassal. Other vassals infighting and destroying the royal fleet, and the hope of England with it. And general treachery, bloodshed, warfare, mayhem, tragedy, and loss everywhere. I mean, Aethelred’s reign begins with treachery with his mom killing his brother. It ends with treachery. And you could even extend the series through Cnut’s reign, when Aethelred’s younger sons - Edward the confessor and his brother - come back to England years later. The Confessor’s brother comes back from Normandy on invitation from another “loyal vassal” only to be stabbed in the back by the guy, loyal to Cnut the whole time. And then it’s down to the Confessor to save the Wessex house. Just an excellent time period. I’d devour a good show or movie based on it.

Reading the Anglo-Saxon Chronicles at the moment and this video helped understand this particular moment in history. One needs to read and absorb Englands history often for it to sink in. There is so much going on but very interesting.

Aethelred the Unready is a Victorian misnomer. His proper nickname "unred" means "the badly counseled". Although one could argue the bad counsel was on him, as it mostly consisted of his drinking buddies and high-born bandits.
