WYE VALLEY AND FOREST OF DEAN WALK FEATURING REDBROOK AND NEWLAND
"Redbrook and Newland”
Filmed 29th May 2018
Post-production completed 24th August 2018
Redbrook was another village I mainly passed through en route to other places, but today I take some time to explore it more thoroughly before my walk for the day, which explores parts of both the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean. It includes a visit to the quiet village of Newland, with its impressive church known as the “Cathedral of the Forest”. As I make my way back towards Redbrook I pass through a secluded valley which, although I remember it from having walked through it many years before, I had forgotten just how beautiful it is…..
Filmed in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean in the counties of Monmouthshire and Gloucestershire. Locations include Redbrook, Newland and the Valley Brook. This is part of the series of films in 2018 celebrating 25 years of “The Solitary Rambler”.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.

Another lovely walk through area's well know to us. Rogers great grandparents used to live in the Alm houses at Newland and he can remember visiting them as a small child in the early 1950's. His great-grandfather is buried in Newland Church yard.

This is a very evocative video that brings back many memories. My grandfather worked in the tin works until it closed and he lived in Brewery Yard where my father and his younger brother were born in the early 1920's. He is buried in Newland and he lived in the alms houses spending many an hour in the Ostrich!

I'v run out of superlatives to describe your work Patrick, thoroughly enjoyed that, what a lovely start to my day,I'v only got a few left to watch,so watch two a day, first thing in the morning and last thing at night, and that will take me perfectly to my holiday in Lanzarote. There is only one way you could improve your films, and it's not a criticism, how could it be,and that would be to make each film just three minutes longer and during the film,or at the end, play us the full three minute song, this one was lovely and I'm sure I'm not the only one who would have loved to hear it in full. Another wonderful film in great company. Thanks so much. Pete.

So far this has been one of my favourites I shot in 2018, but I've still many to edit from last year when I can. Thanks for your suggestion about making the films a little longer. I'm still not sure about that at the moment as, like I mentioned in an earlier comment, people are more likely to watch if the films are not too long, but thanks for the idea. Anyway as always Pete thank you so much for all your kind words and for watching :)

Another enjoyable outing, Patrick. Exploring places I'd again not heard of. :-) Always interesting to learn of the local history and the significance of the River Wye. Thanks for taking the time to produce this and all the best. I have noticed that your credits listing is shorter than it used to be?... ;-)

Thanks Olly, hope this has wetted your appetite to explore more of the Wye Valley yourself sometime? My credits have indeed shortened - you may have noticed I no longer use my pseudonyms, i.e. Bob Morgan, Martin Roy - I've finally realised that it's important to let viewers know the films are actually all my own work, so Bob and Martin are no more! :) Hope you have a good Bank Holiday week. Cheers, Patrick :)

Certainly, Patrick. When I think of walking in Wales, my mind immediately heads to the mountains of the Brecon Beacons, maybe the coast path. I still have progress to make along the Severn but following the Wye could be another to add to my list. Hehe, I'd always wondered whether they were pseudonyms. I've just spent a few days in Cornwall and it's been really good. I hope you've had a good few days.

Well I can't fault you there Olly, I can appreciate the Brecon Beacons and the coast, I always say we've got too many nice places to see! :) Glad Cornwall was good, not been down there for a very long time now. I'm in Monmouthshire all of this week and then down your neck of the woods at the weekend to visit family. I'll take a look at your new upload now :)

I know what you mean about having too many places to visit. I'm thinking about another getaway for September. Current options include Dorset and the Lake District! Thank you, Patrick. I imagine you'll enjoy my latest. ;-)

Brilliant Patrick. That oozed rural charm and beauty from start to finish. Do you know what I walked the exact same route as you did to Newland from Redbrook in 2015. I went into the church there and like you I was taken by it and the village. I headed for Coleford though. You did a grand job here - one of your best I reckon. I enjoyed the latter leg of the walk. I followed it on the map as you narrated. It looks a fabulous valley - some good contours there so I can appreciate how it must have felt. Well, very enjoyable. Good going. Mark

Hey Mark, I wondered if you might have done this walk yourself. It's a good circular route of about 5 miles, so you can start it either in Redbrook or Newland. Yes as you say that latter leg of the walk, the valley of the Valley Brook was amazing, I hadn't actually forgotten the walk from doing it many years before, but I had forgotten just how stunning it was. A great one to film and thanks for watching and your kind comments as always Mark. All the best. Cheers, Patrick :)

Thanks for thinking of me Patrick. Yes, I could tell on the map and through your video that it would be a good one to do. Perhaps when we meet we could do something similar. Np pressure of course. It was a pleasure to comment. I'm so pleased I cam across your channel all that time ago - I got a joy from them then and O do now. Have a great day...

Lovely of you to say Mark, I am pleased to have discovered your channel too, always watch your new uploads :) We can definitely do something similar to this walk when we meet, perhaps somewhere that's a bit closer to Hereford? That's where I'll be at the end of October, but I'll let you know more details nearer the time. Hope you have a great day too :)
