WYE VALLEY AND FOREST OF DEAN WALK FEATURING ROSS-ON-WYE AND PENYARD HILL
"Ross-on-Wye and Penyard Hill”

I firmly feel that Ross-on-Wye qualifies as the prettiest town in the Wye Valley and its situation above the River Wye is one of the area’s most iconic images. I spend some time exploring the lovely market town and then go a short walk up to the prominent, thickly wooded hill that lies immediately to the south east of the town…..
Filmed in the Wye Valley and Forest of Dean in the county of Herefordshire. Locations include Ross-on-Wye, Penyard Hill and the Wye Valley Walk. This is part of the series of films shot in 2018 celebrating 25 years of “The Solitary Rambler”.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.

Those woods were my playground when I was growing up in the 1960's, my friends and I knew them like the back of our hands. We used to collect the sweet chestnuts and take them home to roast at the edge of our coal fires, the tree's also gave us our conkers, and wood for the fire on bonfire night, great days, I am so lucky to have been bought up in the "Shire"

Your smile on your face when you found those 🌰 & picked one up & brought it up to your face to look at it closer was PRECIOUS !!! It reminded me of finding bunches of 'em on the lawn of my summer house in the countryside of Japan called Karuizawa .We had beautiful chestnut trees there in our garden/ yard & often squirrels were munching on 'em !!!😍 we used to pick up ones they left behind ,it looked like their teeth mark on 'em !! 😍What a walk that was ( this video ) ! Walking is a great way to refresh your mind, also to get rid of stress & depressing thoughts !! It's a proven method for that ! We all forget what nature can do & bring to us for living in the cities ! We all should take a walk in woods once in a while if not everyday !!! Thank you for this video ! That was lovely Patrick,as they all are,so relaxing and beautiful to watch,and it's always nice to share your company for twenty minutes or so,Ross looks really nice,I'd never seen or read anything of it before,sorry to hear about the business with the flat and the landlord,I find that long solitary walks help with getting away from all your troubles too,your flat in Matlock looked lovely too,I'v seen it in a couple of your films,but as this was recorded almost a year ago I hope and expect you are happy and settled somewhere else now,I'm spoiled,that's two of your brand new films in two days for me to watch,thanks so much on behalf of us all that love them,for all the effort in making them and for sharing them with us,hope to see you around Fairholmes or some far flung place sometime,you never know, very best wishes,Pete.

Thanks Pete, Ross is indeed a very nice place. It was actually the very next day after I returned home from Symonds Yat that I got that text from my landlord, but at least I'm settled now as have been there since the end of October last year. I can't believe nearly a year has passed since you filmed this, once again it was really enjoyable, what a beautiful place which I'm sure brings many tourists especially to the town, Ross market and the lovely old Church, a beautiful place with some peaceful woodland areas for a casual stroll to clear the head and let all those worries disappear at least for a while anyway 😊 I was pleased to hear that after all the hassle you finally found somewhere to settle and you were at least able to enjoy your walk without all the worry, I know how stressful it can be, you're very fortunate to have some fantastic places to escape to because not one has been disappointing to watch, and I sincerely hope you're happier and more secure where you are now. As usual the scenery and views were superb, thank you so much for the work you put into all your videos Patrick, its always a pleasure watching. Looking forward to more soon. I find it incredible too that it was nearly a year ago I filmed this, time just whizzes by. I almost cancelled this trip because of the sudden and unexpected move that would be upon me soon after this, but I had booked and paid for accommodation in the area well in advance so didn't want to lose my money. Ross-On-Wye looks a very lovely town, Patrick. The Market House is a grand building of unique architecture,and put to good use. The mock gothic wall and Gazebo tower are quite eye-catching too. St. Mary's church is a marvellous structure with the beautiful tower and spire that you can see for many miles. The woodland walk looks so pleasurable to go along and up to Penyard Hill, where the remains of the very old castle are situated. With the River Wye in the area, this looks a superb place to visit. Hello Patrick, I am back in Australia but was lucky enough to do a two-week house-swap in Western-under-Penyard which is just a stone's throw away from Ross. I had a wonderful two weeks and did a lot of walking in many areas including the Malvern Hills and Brecon Beacons. Thanks for a great video.

Love your channel. Got ancestors came from Herefordshire great show. To walk in Britain in the steps of my ancestors would be a dream come true! Planning on it next year,keep up the travels they get me through til i can make it to the motherland myself. From America til next time.

It could be the prettiest town Patrick. I just spent my 51st birthday in Ross with an old friend of mine just mooching about and sitting by the river. It was a nice day. This was a nice day to. I've sat amid that old market hall many times and only recently I was going to do near on the exact same walk as you only following the old course of the Wye in the valley below Penyard park. Great episode Patrick. Really am enjoying these Wye Valley videos. All the best. Mark

Great place to have spent your 51st birthday Mark, I'm sure I spent part of one of my younger birthday's with family there at some point. I've always loved Ross when I've visited, could live there. I was hoping to do a longer route for this, but I'd realised I'd spent over 2 hours just filming around Ross before starting the walk, so I cut it to the shorter route as seen here. I used to deliver for Royal Mail to the sculptor who did those Mallards . They very much divided opinion of them in Ross 😁

I recently came across your films, so far just the Wye Valley and the Forest of Dean. They are beautiful. My home town is Ross, but I have not lived there for nearly 50 years. But it's still home. I have such happy memories of the Forest. My great grandfather was a free miner. My mother loved rides up the forest when i visited her. We would always go to Cannop Ponds. She was delighted on one visit to see a wild boar. Watching these films makes me feel very nostalgic. Thank you.

It's my home town also. I grew up in the lone stone house on the end of Merrivale Lane. Haven't been back since 1996.

Lovely as always and such a beautiful place too. Glad to hear thing's settled down for you and that you have a new place to live. It must have come as quite a shock to find that your landlord was selling and then suddenly it was sold. Amazing how life can change at the drop of a hat not always convenient though. Another great video Patrick. Often zoomed passed Ross on Wye on way to visiting relatives living in the South Wales valleys. Must stop off there next time. As for the landlords, in my humble opinion, the law needs to be retightened to protect tenants, as in my view the balance has now shifted far too much in favour of the landlord. Tenants should be legally entitled to be given sufficient time to find alternative rented accommodation before their home is sold from under them. All the best Paul Beachcroft

Thanks Paul, Ross is definitely worth stopping off at if you're passing that way. Thankfully I was lucky find another place as quickly as I did, but yes I agree law should protect tenants better. As soon as I reach 55, assuming I'm still on my own by then, I'll look to social housing which has a much more secure tenancy. Cheers, Patrick :)
