I found this Abus Euro Cylinder in my naughty bucket and decided to see if I could get it Picked Open. Typical abus keyway, really nasty curve and difficult to work around.

For a good training lock I'm not a big fan of keys with the deepest cuts simply because it makes those pins irrelevant (in most keyways). You don't need to even touch them. I would prefer a mix of medium & high cuts over a key like that anyday. Yes having deepest cuts will make them susceptible to oversets, but if you use enough tension to avoid that it ends up being a 2-3 pin lock (like this one).

I don't know why it is, but when I'm confronted with a Yale type keyway I always reach for a top of the keyway pry bar. I find it easier to have a little bit of extra space just to work around the warding, I find I keep rubbing against a bottom of keyway wrench and it's hard to get to the back pins.

A question just occurred to me, how does temperature affect lock picking. Aside from the affect the temperature would have on the picker, would having a lock at very cold or hot temperatures make it easier or harder to open?

Very impressive! I just started learning how to pick locks using your videos. Very helpful but you make it look so darn easy! My local locksmith gave me a rekeyable Kwikset and have just about 'mastered' a standard 3 pin. I've trying moving up to a no. 3 but for some darn reason unable to get it! It's weird because I've gotten fairly into a Master Lock M1 pretty easily. Sigh. Anyway, I guess I'll keep practicing?!

Isn't the side you picked usually on the inside of the door? then if you leave your key in the lock at night, not straight ofcourse, the key won't allow anyone, even with a key, to enter the door? That's how our abus lock is... Maybe its not as easy on the other side?

@VideoDotCam
@VideoDotCam 7 жыл бұрын
Smeado Keys with the deepest cuts mean that the corresponding pins are already at the shearline, meaning they don't need to be picked, turning a 6pin lock into a 2-3 pin lock that's really easy to open, like this one!

I have 2 of these, one of them is easy, takes just about 2 minutes. the other one, I cant get past the 2nd false set. the first pin is a spool and is down, but there is no counter rotation on any pin.. is that possible?

I also have two of those, and while I can open both, the difficulty is not the same. Detail: The first (easier) one was randomly selected in the shop, then I looked for a difficult looking key when buying the second one.

Hiker E - It isn't that. There's been a lot going on around the lab lately - construction two doors down, tree work next door, a neighbor "babysitting" barking dogs, power company replacing a transformer, lawn mowers, summer thunderstorms, helicopters & planes flying over, my other neighbor splitting logs, etc. All LOUD things that ruin videos. I've been lucky to get ANYTHING out lately.

Hi bosnianbill I have a question about a key I have. My dad recently got a new key for my apartment and it can only lock the door but not unlock it. Any clues as why this is happening? I got it to work once out of about 200 tries on unlocking no matter what tricks I try. Thank you for your time and patience.

did he get the key copied?
@sarowie
@sarowie 7 жыл бұрын
locks have asymmetry. turning left is mechanically not the same as turning right. Either it is an very very used original key (every key usage and every swing of the keychain shaves of ever so small bits of metal) or a bad copy (worst case: copy of a copy from a used key directly mechanically copied without using the code book for depth and position - I have such a shity key and it feels like forcing/abusing the lock). Or maybe the lock is defective. Either-way: Change the lock. If the apartment is rented, keep the original lock and key for when you move out (most landlords don´t care and just count keys - but just in case it is good to be able to "give back their property").
@bosnianbill
@bosnianbill 7 жыл бұрын
It sounds like the key is not long enough to reach the actuator. Compare it side-by-side with a known good key to confirm that.
@kekoaw
@kekoaw 7 жыл бұрын
The key seems to be the same length but the copy does seem to have some differences with the original like the how sarowie was saying with it having a messed up depth and position due to being mechanically copied. I tried filing it a little to make it more like the original but the machine that first shaped it took away too much material to really fix it.

@VideoDotCam
@VideoDotCam 7 жыл бұрын
Caleb Tellier It was easy because keys with the deepest cuts make the corresponding pins sit at the shearline without a key inserted, you don't need to touch them. All you need to pick are the 2 pins with higher cuts to get the lock open, which in this case were both spool pins.

This ABUS should have received lubricant first. As with some, the pins and springs are dirty with thick, hard stuff, which can hold the pins in the open (shear line) position. I buy 2nd hand Euro Cylinders from Ebay U.K., they are full of dirt that's solid. Regards. (U.K.)
