Evanescence are a heavy band who operate within the hard-rock and alt-metal lane, but bandleader Amy Lee has a one-of-a-kind voice that's clearly informed by singers from far outside that world. While she's always been open about her deep love for music of all stripes, we asked her directly to pick who she believes are the 11 greatest vocalists of all time - across all genres. Naturally, she understood the assignment, hailing everyone from Stevie Wonder and Björk to Zack de la Rocha and Chris Cornell.
Let us know your favorite vocalists in the comments below!

I met Amy Lee about 17 years ago at a radio station in Houston. She was extremely pleasant. Down to earth. I asked her “What’s your favorite album, or one of them?” And she said “Soundgarden Superunknown I think is my favorite ever. But there’s a lot of them.” I’m sure we could’ve gone on talking about music all day all night but the radio DJ interrupted our discussion. Keep shining bright Amy.

Right! I think this list is more about musicianship and artistic integrity than it is just technical vocals. Some of these artists lead with primarily their voices, some of them want the audience to mainly be drawn in by the songwriting itself and happen to have unique enough voices to get people to listen, and others have hardcore vocals and amazing songwriting backing them.

This. I’m in a choir and we recently listened to Adijo Kerina, which is a foreign language song that’s supposed to be extremely angry. The sample choir we listened to sounded great by technical standards, but every single person in the room commented on how they should’ve been more emotive.

Great list....I'd have Layne (fave vocal performance ever by him is with Mad Season) and Floor (Tarja would sneak in my top 20 though) and Prince in mine from yours. I'd also have Ozzy Osbourne, Kate Bush, David Bowie (for how he used what he had....not the best vocal range but the personality in his voice combined with the song writing talent was genius) , Linda Perhacs (utterly sweet check out Parallelograms...she sneaks infront of Trish from Broadcast in that folkie hippy psychedelic genre), Annie Haslam (the purest most naturally gifted voice ever), Mikael Arkefeldt (best growl ever but also a superior folk rock singer) and Jeff Buckley (unbelievable falsetto to rock vocalist range)

For me Steve Perry, and Maynard from Tool. Though Tool, like Tori, is a bit dark for me these days as far as listening. And you. You are special. Some times still when I hear "My Immortal" the tears come streaming, in the stillness of the quiet power. Marillion is an interesting musical voyage. They was a Scottish band. They are all awesome musicians. Fish has a voice that perfectly fit in with the band. Their albums are a lot like Pink Floyd. The album is meant to be listened to in its entirety. Misplaced Childhood and Script for a Jester's Tear's is a good start to an interesting journey.

Amy, don't know if you will read this comment or any others but thought you should know that anyone that watched this video probably has you in their top 10 if not top 5. I've always found your voice inspiring and emotive, so much so that introduced my 10 year old (just turned 11 as of midnight CST actually) to your music last year. I want her to experience the best of music that makes you feel like a human. I have gradually played more for her this year and she really digs it, which makes me feel like I'm doing something special as her dad. She said she would love to see you play live, hopefully that will happen one day. Thanks for being so true to who you are

I'd say this list is more about musicianship than vocals. Some of the singers she mentioned are mainly known for their amazing voices, some of them are mainly known for the songwriting aspect, some of them are talented at writing catchy songs with instrumentals that would be powerful enough without any singing--so it's more about the stage-presence aspect of their musicianship that attracts people than anything, and others are the full package. With that being said, these are my favorite artists and musical groups of all time--these are only my favorites, I have WAYYYY more that I like, but aren't my favs: -Evanescence--mainly because of Amy Lee, obviously -Whitney Houston -Ariana Grande -Queen -Journey -Aerosmith -Beyonce -P!nk -Kelly Clarkson -Jay Z -The Fugees -Michael Jackson -Aretha Franklin -Mariah Carey -Kendrick Lamar -Lady Gaga -Elton John -The Beatles -Taylor Swift -Celine Dion -Anne Murray -The Mountain Goats -Adele -Dixie Chicks -Avril Lavigne -Alicia Keys -Boyz II Men -Bruno Mars -Christina Perri -Train -Jessie J. -Jewel -Martina McBride -Sugarland -Sia -Frank Sinatra

Very surprised she didnt include Mike Patton in her list. For me personally, Mike's vocal's are number 1 in the music industry with Layne Staley a close second!
