Part of dropping sugar out of the diet is reducing all sweetness of all foods, and over time you stop looking for anything sweet tasting. I started with 90% Lindt chocolate, which seemed bitter at first, but after a couple of weeks I tried a 100% Montezuma chocolate and that is a different animal. Now I have totally converted to 100% chocolate and like it. The 90% seems too sweet now.

@@mcan-piano4718 Absolutely... it's not just with chocolate, for me it occurs with any other "addictive type food"... if I were to consume only a small portion, for example of cake at someone's birthday party, automatically I would start craving more and more... and this includes all carbs, junk foods, processed food-like substances 😊 But.... also fruits, my favorite treats, like apples... I'll have to force myself to eat just one or two instead of 10 ! 😉 But yeah, a single biteful of something addictive, switches on the "binge mode" and it's big trouble after that 🍀💕🕊️🌿🌷

@Jack Neary cavities are mainly caused by sugars and acid. The higher the cacao %, the lower the sugar content although brands will slightly vary. I don't think dark chocolate is acidic or if so, a mild acidity. You'll notice with dark chocolate (especially 80% or above) it gets bitter. I love 90% dark chocolate as I'm on keto and tastes so much better as in cut sugar out. You also eat a lot less when it's dark. Long story short. I highly doubt dark chocolate contributes to cavities but oral hygiene is still very important but it won't rot your teeth like milk chocolate.

There should be a warning label on the candy wrappers,"Warning:Contains Oxalates.People at risk for kidney stones should not consume" Just like the warning they put on soda labels warning Phenylketonurics that the soda contains phenylalanine. I just ate 2 bars of 100% trinitario chocolate from the home of some of the best chocolate in the world in Trinidad & Tobago and giving it to my heart warrior toddler. Thing is we grow and make this an had to really search to find 100% dark as they have so many low fat and up to 70% options. So happy turns out the 100% is cheaper than the rest of them and you get even more!

the other day I bought a lindt 99 percent dark chocolate. I thought I would take just a bite and then leave it and forget about it all together. and this bite was quite bitter. But something about this chocolate made me come back for more.. I finally finished the whole bar in about 3 days. I also liked combining it with grapes. And now I crave this chocolate, I'm going to buy more tomorrow.. what is going on?? what is in this dark chocolate that got me so hooked?

Dr. Berg, I used to consume dark chocolate every day. However, I now limit myself to one small bar per week due to the recent finding (December 2022, Consumer Reports) that much of the dark chocolate for retail has potentially dangerous levels of lead and cadmium.

Started eating the Lily's 93% chocolate bars to supplement any chocolate cravings (usually once or twice a month) a while back because it looked like it wasn't garbage like other bars. Glad to know that Lily's is actually a well known and liked brand. Thought it was a lesser-known off brand, lol. But I do really like those bars and that they definitely fulfil that craving while making me feel confident that I did myself a nutritional service, especially since I do have a concern that I don't get enough iron in my diet.

I've started with 85% some time ago and now am at 100% cacao. Of course it's not your typical chocolate. It's quite bitter and sticky but once you've cut out most of the refined sugars, your taste buds will adapt as well. It's an acquired taste, for sure, but I like it.

I have started making hot chocolate, one cup a day, with 1/2 milk, 1/2 water, 1 TBSP honey, and about a tsp of cocoa. I don't measure, so these are estimates. I'm not a sugar eater, so use honey for coffee, too. I find that the one cup of hot chocolate a day (you can make it cold, too, just after it's made on the stove and cools down, put it in the refrigerator for later), satisfies my wanting anything sweet, and it really hits the spot for after dinner or before bed. It doesn't bother my sleep, but it might bother some others. If your child is eating too much candy, try the hot chocolate with honey and see if you can wean him off the candy/sweetened cereals.

I get heart palpitations from chocolate, sometimes extreme ones. It sucks because i really love chocolate and was a bit addicted to it. I kept eating it even with the palpitations but then it got so bad that i had to stop because i feared i would get a heart attack. Its strange because it only became a problem in my 30's. In my younger years i could eat all the chocolate i want without any problems.
