I have been eating usually 4 squares of dark chocolate (usually 85-92%) with my toast in the morning for breakfast for many years. After seeing the Consumer Reports article I had my blood tested for heavy metals. The test showed low levels of lead and mercury, but unfortunately did not test for cadmium. This was back when the CR article was first released. Anyway, I decided not to worry about it and still have my dark chocolate whenever I want it.......which is often.....I'm 80 now and if the dark chocolate takes me out....OK.........

Since following Dr. Grundys advice on lectins way back in 2017, my health changed for the better. So I started having 2 squares of dark chocolate every evening - some times up to 4 squares. For the past 3 years or so I have had a sore mouth . My homeopath tried various remedies but nothing worked. I thought chocolate might have something to do with it, so stopped for a few days but nothing changed so I went back to the chocolate. Then one day I came across something about oxalates causing burning mouth syndrome. I investigated further and realised that I had anoxalate overload problem, probably since childhood and I am now 80 almost. Although I am very fit and healthy, this explains some of the health issues that I have had and it is my view that the oxalates have possibly caused the lectin intolerance. I have now reduced my oxalate levels and stopped chocolate and other so called healthy foods. My mouth is no longer sore,various skin issues are clearing up and I feel so pleased that I have found out this information.

I've eaten alter ego's 100% and lily's 92% for a while now, but switched to ghirardelli 100% back in 2021 because of heavy metals ( this has been known for a while, don't know why now it's worrisome). Before I switched, I still consumed the ones I had because it's not that big of a problem if you consume it the right way. If you have those brands found to contain above average amounts of heavy metals, luckily it's not the end of the world. - Consume the chocolate with fibrous foods, that alone will reduce heavy metal absorption quite drastically. - For more effectiveness, include some phytic acid containing foods if you're healthy. It's not just an anti-nutrient, it binds to damn near everything, such as heavy metals, just like fiber rendering it a powerful detoxifying aging if consumed in moderation. - Get some iodine! This aids the body in removing heavy metals.

I wouldn't eat ghirardelli chocolate either! The Consumer Reports tested 28 dark chocolate bars for lead and cadmium. They found either or both in all of the chocolate bars including ghirardelli products (just less of it). Remember this is a test at a point in time, ghirardelli likely sources its chocolate beans from multiple sources, so one batch may be fine and the next full of lead and cadmium. Things like Kale and spinach are already full of cadmium, no need to make matters worst by adding chocolate to the mix. If I have to get cadmium, I'd rather get it from things like Kale and spinach than from chocolate.
@kingsolo5112

@@mikepetrilli4686 Definitely agree with the variability in heavy metals between the source of cacao. I will not however, stop eating my kale, spinach, or dark chocolate. Dark chocolate is more of a complete food compared to leafy greens as it is also a potent source of fat, mostly oleic acid. Yes, you can get that from quality oils like olive oil which I also have lol, but I like to mix it up a bit. Also, I just love the taste of 100% dark chocolate, makes my life complete.

Hey Eric, I also read the write up in Consumer Reports and share some of those same concerns.. IMO - MOST FOODS have a TRADE-OFF ISSUE, benefits vs problems. My way of handeling this is monitoring the DAILY DOSE... My Brand is Lindt 70% and according to the CR article the "Danger Level" for an adult would be about 3 sq per day. So i avoid that level. Also you might want to explore the other additional Supplements that the body's DETOX SYSTEM needs to remove toxins including heavy metals. I believe they include: SELENIUM, Vit-C, AND OTHERS. -StayWell 😊😊 -70SomethingGuy

I ate dark chocolate daily for 3 years until a comprehensive study found that the majority of them contain very unsafe levels of cadmium and heavy metals. Specifically, dark chocolate had, on average, 7.6 micrograms of cadmium and 0.8 micrograms of lead per one-ounce serving, and some products had three or four times as much. Look it up.

What about the insane unsafe amounts of heavy metals in majority of all dark chocolate that is not disclosed by the companies?

Whatever doc! Not everyone should be eating more or lots of chocolate. One should be eating things according to what your biochemistry needs to help it stay balanced with other nutrients. Just the fact he recommends chocolate is good for all, clearly shows how little he actually knows and understands about biochemical individuality. - Chocolate is super high in copper, some folks might need a little more others do not! It is imperative to understand and learn what's happening with your biochemistry. It is well studied and understood that excessive extracellular copper that exceeds your bodies ability to bind up copper safely with ceruloplasmin and metallothionein is a signal for and involved in uncontrolled angiogenesis! That is exactly what tumors need to grow new blood vessels and proliferate!

I'm quite partial to Lindt's 85% cocao chocolate bars. I know that 70% dark chocolate is considered the minimum for it to be considered healthy, but I find that's too sweet for me.

It is, indeed, high in oxalates. 250mg on 100 grams (or 400mg if you take 100% cacao dark chocolate). Also, spinach is extremely high in oxalates, along with other foods like rhubarb, Swiss Chard, beets or Star Fruit.
