Hi Tatro you really did get that pan to run sweet,I have a S&S shorty on my Shovel and while it has been worked on i have been having issues with rear cylinder plugs failing on short trips its fine on a long ride but it hates local rides but you have that engine sounding really quiet for a pan what can I say you have a gift.

Glad to see that pan running well. Finding the layers of problems and cleaning them up one at a time was the real challenge.

The guy said the bike had set a year or so , the valve seats could have corroded causing the valves to leak until its run a while , If synthetic oil is in the motor , the cylinders may be rusted , synthetic oil is a moisture magnet , if you like rusted parts inside your engine > use synthetic oil .

@@TatroMachine I don’t think I’ve even seen the bike run idle yet but saw a half dozen videos of you trouble shooting or fiddling with those mikunis with out any positive results is why I asked. You are a hell of a good mechanic so if you say they’re better than stock I can’t argue with that.

@@TatroMachine when I rebuilt my 75 flh thholes hots. cam was too worn to reuse. Unfortunately the original cam is no longer available from Harley or aftermarket. I ended buying a indexible cam and could never get the engine to run right. Would idle great and pulled strong at WOT. At mid throttle it would blubber if you gave more throttle. I finally put another cam in it and had the machine shop nest door from my work take the stock flh head pipe and weld up the crossover pipe for other side of bike and make it a 2 into 1. This made it rideable but nowhere the the get up and go it had with the other cam .The flh used a different cam than the plain FL model in that year. This was because they wanted a little more power to offset all the weight of the extras on a flh. If people only knew all things that affect the engine performance. I was getting reversion in the exhaust making the exhaust flow go backwards at different loads and rims. If you watch flat track racing on cable they all run 2 into one on all the twins. My flywheels shifted on my shovel causing bad vibrations before I rebuilt it. I had crank spun balanced when I rebuilt it. If you are cracking motor mounts on a shovel it's because you flywheels have shifted . Usually caused from too many holeshots.

The engine might be '59 but this is NOT a 1959 bike by any means and these guys know nothing about starting obstinate "fart boxes"!!!. I am on my 8th. Harley (age 75) and it is a 1959 Duo Glide!

@@TatroMachine I'm glad you got the old trundle iron going well and I admit, I watched all the videos that crop up on You Tube here in England. I find quite often that the full series cant be found, even if you search for it. The forks and headset casings are from a 1960 to '64 as the '58 & '59 had a chromed tin headlamp like older Harleys from the birth of the telescopic front forks. Your frame and rear end come from a pre 1958 Hydra Glide as '58 to '64 was the "Duo Glide and they all had rear suspension, (thus the name, Duo). All the same, a lovely bike and yes, they are all "old fart-boxes" but wonderfully so. My other knitting machines have embraced Norton and BSA flat head singles, pre war Royal Enfield 2 stroke, BMW R50 (a lovely bike, ran like a rolex watch!). My Harleys were a WLC, the an EL then another EL then a UH then a servicar and later another one: An flh Hydra Glide and an Electra Glide (AMF '78 1340cc) which I didn't like at all!! It looked wonderful, just like a big girls' Lambretta (as my Rocker chums taunted me: the engine ran well but the handling was crap and we never did manage to get it stable above 80mph. Also, after years of trick riding the ELs and the FL, the Electra was impossible to trick-ride. The Duo Glide now, is like a comfortable old armchair for a feeble old fart-box arse. We are well suited!!! I appreciated your videos and Mum, it reminded me of my own, running down the road in the snow to help me bump-start my 750 WLC in 1965!!!

Should have replaced the carb with an S&S carburetor already, mikuni are junk

I used to think that the Edelbrock Harley carb was awesome, then again, maybe it was the American flag on the side of it. Mikuni was the gold standard carburetor from the 1960's throughout the 1990's in almost every machine that isn't a harley. Even today, I find Mikuni carbs everywhere there isn't fuel injection.
