Re "use different" angles, one thing you're making me think of is real estate videos. One common shot is the steadicam "walk in" -- start outside, walk into the house, somehow deal with the exposure change, then walk all the way through to exit from the back door into the garden. This means you've basically got a master shot that covers everything (depending on the house). People do the same shot at weddings. Walk into the church, walk into the reception venue, walk into the bride/groom's house, etc. But it's often worthwhile to do the **reverse** walk in -- start at the back of the house, walk into the house, then all the way through till you exit the front door. You now have seen every room from a different angle. Very often, when you get to the edit, you not only find that one or the other angle was better -- but that it's useful to have more than one angle so that they can be used or intercut in different ways. For instance, going into the house is more of a start-of-the-video shot, while exiting the house is more end-of-the-video. Similarly, with drone footage, I'm sure that not only will exploring different angles (if you have time!) give you more options for the best-looking shot, but that each angle/shot will have different meanings/feelings... After all, when you're on the ground and are taking photos of a subject, why should it be the case that you instantly know the best angle/composition/whatever? Isn't it always at least to some extent a process of **discovering** the best angle/composition/whatever?

My DJI Mini 3 pro arrived yesterday and I am still very much on the learning curve. Your videos are excellent. I have been a stills photographer for many years but I am looking forward to making drone videos. You showed the dull light clip and i decided to suggest something that I use in my photography. On a dull day I take a photo of the location and features. In Lightroom I have a category titled, ‘good locations’. I put my dull photos in this area, noting any hints, using keywords, for reasons to return, eg: sunset, fluffy clouds, Autumn colours, golden wheat, snow. If I look out of the window and see that the conditions that might be suitable at one of the previous stored location photo I can head out give a try. Likewise if I know that time of year might be giving the right condition ( eg ripe wheat’) There is a tree in the middle of a field near my home location. Most of the year it is quite bland. I returned to the location and took a stunning photo when the tree was surrounded by a field full of Oil seed rape. In the case of seasonal dependence, (eg Autumn colours) put reminder of potential locations in your electronic calendar. Sorry for the long comment! It is basically a location scrapbook!

Re "one consistent movement", this is the way I think about it (which will definitely not be for everyone, but anyway...) * In a feature film, movement is very often to do with following a moving object. * In a feature film, very often you go from one "keyframe" to another -- you start from a well-composed frame, and end on a well-composed frame. * When there's no moving object, the movement often has a meaning, as opposed to being random, icing-on-the-cake movement for the hell of it. This meaning could be conveying a subjective experience or emotion, or could be the camera's commentary on an action. Eg: dolly in to show dawning realisation, dolly out to leave someone feeling alone at the end of a scene, roundie round to show someone's world being turned upside down, etc. Now, these ideas may or may not translate to drones, depending on what sort of content you're shooting (landscapes? weddings? short films?). But at any rate they're all antithetical to the sort of random, wobbly movement Matthew talks about. To put this another way, in my opinion: * Every movement should have an intention and look intentional. * Unintended, random movements often create distracting speedbumps for the audience. Usually, the audience should concentrate on the content and the meanings of a shot, but unintended movement can break them out of the reverie and/or make them conscious of camera technique.

Re "lock exposure", I think that's a great tip -- and, at the same time, I'm not entirely sold on it. After all, even in a bid-budget feature film, there can be iris pulls if a camera is moving through changing light conditions. Otherwise, you risk seriously under/overexposing. Now, it's true that the auto exposure on drones is often not smooth, in contrast with a stepless iris pull. But this can be something that you fix with a cut in the edit. So, yep, great tip, but I think there's a time for auto exposure -- it just depends what you're going for, how you're editing, etc...

RE: Specific shots. There is a 'general' rule of 10 seconds film makers use to hold a shot. I utilize this by walking the location a bit, including the shore and water shots to get a feel for morning or evening, the interesting rock formations or trees, light direction, the birds, waves and lighting. It also helps to calm me down before committing to the shoot. I then plan the next three sequences specifically looking for what I want to frame. Once the drone is in position I begin the sequence in a direct single motion - it can be forward, sideways, circular or any other constant motion. Hold it, counting, for 10 seconds. You will be surprised how long that feels for you and possibly how much ground the drone covers. If it isn't quite right then bring the drone back and file the sequence again. It is also nice to film these in different camera angles; they sequences are short and should be easy to replicate. Play back one of these first three to confirm exposures and move on to the next sequences to cover the location. Back at the ranch the 10 second clips can be reduced to 2-4 seconds which seems to be the expected duration. Note: don't forget to have a final great flight without the planning. Launch the drone and fly and just experience the flight, especially if using the FPV googles.

All really good tips to implement with other tips you have previously covered! I have definitely improved since last year. Rough spring here so not much flying and the few I've done have not been good light but hopefully summer/fall will be more accommodating 🙂. There is an old (pre revolutionary war is old here) fort near me that I want to film and printed out a google map of it so I could draw arrows of all the moves I want to make sure I cover so I don't forget during the fun of flying around. Also I am starting to use my first battery just to fly around and check camera settings, change ND filters, etc... and then not really plan to shoot keepers until 2nd & 3rd batteries.

Hi Matthew, about recording tons of videos to throw most away, if you have lots of time to plan and record videos, that is great. However, if you are out on a tour (on a tour bus) where you have just 20-30min at a location. I will try to think of the best angle and the best moves, but I will just record as much as possible to edit later for time. If I were driving and could take how much time I needed, that would work well, but on vacation, that is not always the case :) Any tips for that case?
@TheDroneCreative
@TheDroneCreative Жыл бұрын
I do have a really handy tip for that. If you know the route you are taking, a quick look on Google Images or Instagram of the location will show you angles that others have recorded and give you ideas that you can try very quickly when arriving at that location. It's a method I use all the time to roughly know the shots I want before I go to a location. Hope that helps!

@@TheDroneCreative Thanks! I will explore the places I will go to. One of the days I will take a day-trip to the Scottish Highlands so I will ask them for the route so I can check the stops and try to plan. @@TheDroneCreative I like to use Google maps, 3D mode, satellite view for cities to find cool angles I want to take photos of and take screenshot prints to bring along in my drone bag to refresh my memory.

Dont you have any problem with fog on the lens when you film humid days by the sea? I have the problem all the time, looking for solution.

I've got my C2 button mapped to Lock Exposure, but it doesn't seem to give any sort of feedback when I press it. Is it like a toggle, or is it just a "lock the current exposure at the time of pressing the button" sort of thing? Appreciate the rest of the tips though, I've been practicing flying with my Mini 3 the past few weeks but I'm itching to start putting it all into practice and making a cinematic-style video. I was navigating some trees over a river similar to that clip near the end of the video a few days ago (though just taking a few photos), and it was one of the tensest situations I've ever been in. :D Gonna have to practice a lot more before I feel confident enough to try filming video that way!

haha, flying in tight spaces near trees can be stressful but worth it! The Lock Exposure is a toggle, when you press it you should see a yellow square in the middle of the screen with a lock symbol to show it has locked, then pressing it again will unlock it allowing it to change freely. Hope that helps.

@@TheDroneCreative Yes, thanks! I tried it again today and saw it working now that I knew what to look for-maybe I just missed it before.

Yes, my biggest mistake has been stopping the recording too early. I need to allow some time at the end of a sequence shot to allow the scene to breathe. Thanks!

You have done multiple videos of wirestock and your income to be seems like same on every other videos . Doesnt make any sense at all. If you are doing paid collaboration or something then spit it that way.. because i view each and every video you upload because they are good content, but this wirestock thing got me on my nerve, just saying nothing personal
