It’s a quest that many of us dream of undertaking… Riding a motorcycle to Alaska - the last and ultimate frontier. And that’s exactly what we did last summer. In fact, we rode all the way to the very top of Alaska, to Deadhorse, and we learned a lot along the way.
This is a completely doable journey for motorcycle riders of any skill level, but there are some important things to know and some decisions to be made before you head off. This video will prepare you for your adventure with 12 tips and insights into what to do, what NOT to do, where to go, and how to avoid being eaten alive by bears, or worse, a slow death of being eaten alive by mosquitoes.
Welcome to our channel 2Up and Overloaded, we’re excited to have you along for the ride!
We are Tim and Marisa Notier, and we quit our jobs and sold everything 5 years ago to ride around the world two up on a motorcycle to follow our dreams. On this channel, we share our adventures with you, and everything we learn about traveling together on a motorcycle ➜ what to do, and what to avoid.

I went to Alaska this past July on a Honda Goldwing. I didn’t make it to the Arctic Circle because it rained horribly on my travel day. However, I did get to Fairbanks, Anchorage, Seward and Juno. Wonderful trip.

Thanks for taking the time to create this video............I Flew into anchorage 2007, rented a KLR 650 for 10 days, (50th birthday present from my wife and daughters).......... Rode most of what you did except Deadhorse, the rental co. had a $300 surcharge if I went there apparently 50% of all their rental bikes had to be hauled back............. went down to Whitehorse and to Dawson, Top of the World hwy.............. When I rode thru the tunnel to Whittier there were no lights in the tunnel it was really sketchy on a KLR with a one candle power headlight, I took the slow ferry over to Valdez........ I rode 3500 miles while there, camped most nights, never saw a bear or any skeeters (July), slept most nights with a black T-shirt wrapped around my head, biggest joke in Alaska is "hang your food in a tree"........ TIP for anyone going buy your food in grocery stores they all have hot food/coffee bars and places to sit, cabins and hostels are way cheaper than motels...

Wow what a great adventure you had! And that's crazy about the 50% of bikes had to be hauled back... I can see why though. Plus that's pretty good advice about getting food because it's slim pickings up there! Thank you for your awesome comment!

Wow, y’all are tough as nails! I know that lack of sleep and long distance riding was a test of endurance and will power. What a great video. You two deserve much more views and followers. One thing that’s always blown me away about Alaskan motorcycle Travel is the book “Ghost rider” by drummer Neil Peart from the band Rush. He rode all these Canadian and Alaskan roads in the mid 90s on a BMW GS 1100. I can’t imagine how remote sparsely populated it was back then.

The mosquitos are no joke! One thing that was our saving grace camping on our trip to Deadhorse in July ‘22 was a Thermocell Backpacker. It runs on the same fuel canister as my camp stove and has little cards with repellent on them. Typically within 15 minutes of turning on we could ditch our mosquito nets. I enjoyed following your trip as well. I am nearing the end of posting the videos from mine.

Great video on Alaska that doesn't gloss over the reality of motorcycle travel. It helps to be mentally prepared as well as all the other preparations required. All that cold rain and mud for days on end and to end up in a place like Deadhorse is something you really have to mentally accept before your trip begins. But, it is Alaska, the Final Frontier, and a place worth experiencing! Thanks to both of you for giving me a valuable insight into making this epic 2-wheeled trip.

Another great video. You Both add a great vibe to your vlog. I rode up the Alcan and back on the Cassiar doing the Top of the World Highway on the return. I planned on camping at the Arctic Circle but it was closed for a large fire and so I turned south to my grandchildren’s home in Anchorage on June 21st. Your tips on pacing, mosquitoes, rain gear, and daylight are all really spot on. I used a neck buff doubled over as an eye blackout shade. I also had a Thremocell mosquito repellent device and mosquito head net. And pacing, I planned on no more than 350 miles a day and only had one day over 400 but that still took about 11hours. Rain gear is a must, buy it. Enjoy the journey , it may not be inexpensive, but when you’re 85 years old you’ll be able to look at each other and say remember when we did …..and you would be saying I wish we’d have done …… I’m looking forward to other videos - unless I missed them, on your gear reviews (my wife wants to get a new helmet for her new ride) and I’d be interested in hearing how the new KTM did on this trip - maintenance, tires, mpg, and so on. Your KTM experiences seems to run counter to several friends who tell me they didn’t do as well as you have. I’ll be staying with my 18 year old 650 VStrom for a bit longer. Best of luck in Indonesia. Godspeed Brian

I have used your journey for a ton of planning. Added several side trips from your videos. I enter Canada on Aug 8th for my accent Deadhorse. After Deadhorse, I'll tour all of Alaska, including down to Homer. I've also used your advice. I was able to book a ferry to Skagway. So, I'll get the best of both roads. I've included Hatcher Pass, and McCarthy both. I depart Canada back into the states on 1 September. The last add was Roosevelt NP. Have a safe trip on your next adventure.

Still waiting on my turn for the Alaska/Canada trip. Thanks for the heads up and warnings. I've followed your entire Alaska journey and am now backtracking the lower 48 trek and further south. Have almost finished "Maiden Voyage". I know y'all caught the mosquito and rainy season, I wonder how the early season would fare. Deadhorse looked to be dismal on many levels, I think I'll head to Tuktoyaktuk to enjoy the journey and the destination. Good luck and safe travels.

Fantastic review of Alaska from your view and experience. I always love your choice of music and the epic music is perfect for Alaska. My favorite was the music for the road to Skagway. Rain gear has to be top of the list for sure and mossy protection is so important to enjoy the trip. Some people think they need a dual sport or adv bike while the reality is once out of town it is all highway, and hours of highway between points. A good long haul, comfortable highway bike is the best. Any bike can and has done the trip. I'm reading about your visit to Tikal currently and I laughed reading about camping near the forest with Howler monkeys. They are so loud and scary sounding I can't imagine getting any sleep in your tent! I also laughed when I read about your friend's problem with the mechanic not having his bike ready when promised. "Manyana" is a misunderstood word, most people think it means "tomorrow" but it actually means "Not today". That's the Gringo translation. 😉
@2UpAndOverloaded
@2UpAndOverloaded Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your awesome comment and perspective, once again! Yes, I love your mañana translation, and you are absolutely right about the long straight highway miles in and around Alaska. A comfortable highway motorcycle is best, though it's true that anything and everything has made it. And for us anyway, outside of the Dalton, it was hard to find dirt. All just pavement up there. Thanks once again for sharing!

I am Canadian I try and avoid Tim Hortons. It is open in the middle of the night. Any where to get warm is good enough after a couple of hundred miles in the rain. Who doesn’t go to Deadhorse me, I didn’t have time, after I went to Tuk. I did see Caribou in Denali but I didn’t get to see a Musk Ox. I skipped most of the cool parts of Southern Alaska. The biggest problem was not having planned where to stay ahead of time. I often could not find anywhere to stay and slept by the road side. You get tired enough you can sleep. The 24 hr daylight is weird but kind of liked it. Bugs just ignore them. Still the most amazing ride I have ever done. Now I just have to go back and see the places I missed the first time. The ride to Sgagway must be one of the best on the Continent.

I was surprised by the huge mosquito issues, I thought with the extreme cold winters that mosquito larva wouldn’t survive. I have to agree with you about Tim Horton’s, I was in Victoria BC last week and tried their stuff it wasn’t good at all so I don’t get the draw. I’ve been pondering a solo trip to Alaska for a while now, the biggest challenge is the expense I’m hoping to reduce it by tent camping off my bike as much as possible to make it happen. Thanks for the great tips!

@2Up and Overloaded There are good Nanaimo Bars, and there are great Nanaimo bars. You will just have to try one and see. Hopefully, Tiger Barb's because they are the best. Here is what Wikipedia says: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nanaimo_bar I am sorry that I didn't get the message to you sooner. I have failed you. Heehee. You know how the crash between the peanut butter truck and the chocolate truck created Reece's Peanut butter cups? I dream of driving a truck full of Nanaimo Bars into a Dairy Queen and creating the best Blizzard 😉 I also dream of riding my motorcycle to the Arctic Ocean. Oh, if dreams could come true! I will now stop my silliness and wish you all of the best on your travels. When you are back in the States, I will get you a Nanaimo Bar. Your faithful fan, TIGER COWARD

I just stumbled upon your site and really enjoyed the Banff segment! Just a curiosity. Circa 2010, we're you kids riding a KTM 999? I was enroute to my residence in Fort Smith Arkansas traveling on US 59 between Siloam Springs and Stillwell Oklahoma and was passed by a couple on a KTM 999 traveling south late in tge day with an Illinois tag on their bike! 😊

Wow, I hate to say it, but that was not us. We only started riding motorcycles 2015 and beyond and never had that type of KTM, but your memory is astounding!!! I'm glad you found our channel and we're excited to have you along for the ride!

Thanks for the video. It is really informative. I am planning to go to Alaska this summer 2024. I love camping but those bears…I am solo rider and it will be very hard for me to camp knowing that bears are always around. I need to find a solution to this.

Glad it was helpful! We had bear spray on our hips, and we really think that if you are responsible with your food and garbage, you will be safe. It's only when people are lazy with their trash and food scraps that bears ruffle through your gear. Bear Bells, Bear Spray, and some twine to hang your goodness far from your tent and your A Okay! Thanks for tuning in!

@@2UpAndOverloaded Is it possible to drive the Dalton Road with such a motor as the HD Street Glide? Is it reasonable or rather let it go?

Tim and Marisa Hi 🙂👋🍺🍺🍺🏍🏍🏍!!!!, hope my two dear friends are doing well and that you both have a great weekend and upcoming week 🙂, and I have never seen the Northern lights in person, if you both ever do a trip I'd love to see it through your perspectives, please make a smore for me and a drink of whiskey if you do go, lots of love and best wishes to you both and it's been rumored that "The Mosquitto" is the Alaskan State "Bird" lol 🤣🤣🤣, until next time, stay safe, stay awesome out there everyone 😊👋🍺🍺🍺🏍🏍🏍

I vow to make a smore with your name on it if we ever see the northern lights! I think our next opportunity will be in Norway in a few years... so you will just have to keep tuning in week after week to confirm if we cheers a shot of whiskey in the name of Ata Glance! We know you will be still riding along with us, and we thank you in advance! Cheers!

Thank you for taking me along!! Where you guys on a KTM 1190 or 1290r? I will be on my 2015 1190r that is almost ready to GO!!! I have 2 extra gallons of fuel, would that be enough? Thanks again!! Eric in Phoenix.

We rode up to Deadhorse on a 1190r and it was perfect!! We only had an extra gallon in our Rotopax, and only needed it on our way back from Deadhorse to Coldfoot... but we ran out of gas 5 miles from Coldfoot! So definitely bring two extra gallons, but you won't have to fill them until your return trip from Deadhorse. Thanks for riding along with us and we know that you will absolutely love the ride!

Absolutely! There would be some very difficult days on the road to Deadhorse if it rains, but most of the roads we took were paved from Canada all the way into the heart of Alaska!

I went to Alaska this past July on a Honda Goldwing. I didn’t make it to the Arctic Circle because it rained horribly on my travel day. However, I did get to Fairbanks, Anchorage, Seward and Juno. Wonderful trip.
