12 valve cummins strange problem (problem solved! Governor springs issue; read description)

Problem solved: I had all four springs installed; I took out the smallest one on both sides and runs perfect now, no blip, fuels to 3,200 rpm nicely.

It's the screw cap that holds dn 3-4K governor springs. Needs adjusting. One click at a time, either in or out. Takes time testing..... worked for our two 97's & one 96! Installed 2 4k's & 1 3k. Good luck everyone!

Yea when you get the 3k governor spring it will tell you leave out the little spring and install all the others. And if you undo two tight clicks good rule of thumb would be too tighten it back up two tight clicks. Sometimes it takes adjusting to get it right. Good you got it fixed now. Nice truck tho man that’s the holy grail truck a 98 12v 5 speed. I bought a 94 that used to do that but not as bad only when it was cold though. It wasn’t governor springs. I never messed with it cause it wasn’t that bad plus it was a winter beater. Eventually tho the rack stuck wide open and it put it in a ditch and ripped the front suspension out of it.

Mine always does this. 97 auto. I have other driveability issues as well. Just scheduled a time with a local big shot diesel company to look at it cause I've done all I can. And the blip returning to idle ain't shit to me personally. It's egts and power placement with mods I have

Ok i have this problem on my truck, and replaced govenor springs (3k). I counted one slight click on the spring cap and 2 more clicks for each set of springs. Put everything back together and it’s still knocking falling to idle.

dues and a half fender was pretty bad so I swapped it out for a good one, and it was the governor I think I updated that in the description. But I don't rock that truck no more I got rid of it for my 07 f250 12 valve Fummins

My truck does the same thing when cold but very very minimal studder compared to yours. I don't think I notice it when it's warmed up. I have a 97 bone stock.

think this is a manual thing. my auto 12valve never did this but all 3 of my manuals did. pretty sure its just the govner spring kick back when ur not in gear

You only needed to back the nut off a 1/4 turn on each side but now it seems you took the spring out and it cuts fuel too fast

Mine does that at cold start and dies if i push to far down on the peddle.

So many possibilities, could also be a valve not closing properly. Have your injector pumps checked.

sounds like a fueling issue at back down or just as you get off throttle. Maybe not enough fuel until you get back down to idle. it could even be too much fuel left trying to combust in the cylinder.

What’s fuel pressure to the ppump? Maybe lift pump leak or not enough fuel pressure at pump

Mine does the same, and also breaks up and like hits a brick wall at Certain RPM’s in 1st and 2nd gear, only time it’s fine is when you lay into the throttle

It’s just your governer keeping the engine idle from dropping to low. You don’t have a problem! Nothing to fix.

meia gazdag first of all I bought the truck with the dented fender and fixed it after the video, and a little mud here and there is fine, it's a truck not a sports car. I'm restoring it anyways because I daily drive my fummins now.

I’m having same problem after 4 k gsk install I get that drop first this in the morning then it idles fine until I drive it die afew mins then goes up To 1k rpm’s what’s going on mine never done it until 4k install

@@docksidemarine4273 yes 0.145 on my depth gauge on both sides.. after doing afew more I’ve figured out in my opinion it’s easier for me to get the depth’s the same and not just the clicks…

Brad Dubasak i havent tried anything yet but i think its something with the governor, i also have 3200 rpm so must be our problem.

Brad Dubasak I figured it out, the kit comes with three new springs, leave the smallest spring out. I think that's for 4k I took mine out and runs puuuuurfect and fuels up to 3,200 rpm.

Josh Simpson I put 4k’s in mine runs great except the return to idle and it drops and kicks back up sounds like yours only does it when it’s first started after warm Up it’s fine did you fix yours what’s the problem?

Sounds like your flywheel is having issues after being engaged, something isn't being disengaged properly.

Adjust your idle and or you may have a small air leak from your fuel line from the tank or some where on the lift pump or injector pump maybe your return valve on the front of the injector pump Bosch factory ones are prone to failing and returning to much fuel worse case is a worn engine w low compression

jeeperguytj i think it is too, i have another truck im more focused on atm, 07 f250 12 valve cummins swapped. the problem is only when the oil is cold so im ok with it when hot.

Think your mechanically inclined? You got 25 years of idiots breaking off bolts and burning at least one wire wrapped around every bundle of wires all through that truck. And it's a dodge, so the original truck was only designed for a low horse gas motor, not a 1,300 lbs sitting on top of a Vietnam era suspension. The good news is if you spend a year of your time and $10k in parts, you will be a real mechanic with a truck that runs. Going to a big we'll respected diesel shop for advice? That will be a great learning lesson, please let us all know what you learn.
