His spatial reasoning skills are actually rather impressive, to understand how that shape is going to morph and form as it goes through the process by just looking at it is something a lot of people just couldn't do.

The pompom also has traditional roots in Scandinavia. Miners would attach them to their hats to cushion the tops of their heads in the dark mine shafts incase the ceiling was too low.

In Belgium and the Netherlands (and maybe in other countries as well), if you translate Santa Claus, you get “Sinterklaas” but we celebrate “Sinterklaas” on 6 December. Our word for Santa is “de kerstman” which means “ the Christmas man” Just a little interesting fact

The pompom also has practical purposes. When weaving or knitting a hat, you make a tube and close an end. You can either sew the end shut or bundle the loose threads into a pompom. I think it has a nice connection to the unicorn dropping, in that a hatmaker takes something that is a leftover part of the process of creating a hat and turns it into something fun and desirable.

The 'Santa Claus hat' as we know it today is very like the 'voyageur cap' known in North America and Canada during the colonial era and earlier, and may have originated in France, judging by the spelling of 'voyageur'. The long flap allowed the wearer to stash small items, such as a tin of tobacco, in the point, and hold it in place with a blanket pin (a simple version of penannular brooches like the Tara brooch) so that they wouldn't fall out if the cap came off. The tassel at the end was a way of using up the yarn (waste not, want not!) and making it look a little fancy. Perhaps the pompom was originally a very short tassel. (As a RevWar reenactor, I've knit many a voyageur cap in my day...)

Bonus message: In Finland, Santa Claus (joulupukki, "Christmas Goat") is said to live with his elves, reindeer and wife at Korvatunturi, Lapland, Finland. From there he answers to childrens' letters and travels around the world to deliver presents. Traditionally he wore a brown attire but these days he uses a lot of red too. In Finland our Santa hats lack the white rim and pom-pom. Instead, the tip of the hat has a round bell on it!

That’s not a frock coat on Scrooge McDuck, it’s a smoking jacket! Frock coats were popular for men of all ages through the early and mid victorian era, only falling out of fashion in the 1890s. They were worn as a suit jacket - day wear, and not an overcoat - and were replaced by the “sack coat.” Sack coats stuck around, and our modern suit jackets are more or less the same. By the very end of the 19th century, yes, only older men would be wearing frock coats - who could afford to replace clothing that wasn’t worn out?

I literally just today "learned" that the modern image of Santa donning a red suit came from coca cola ads. I was watching a coca cola documentary and when they mentioned his likeness we know and love was a product of the coca cola marketing team it really puzzled me. It sounded incorrect for a few reasons. So basically I learned something new today that I was skeptical of then found out it was indeed incorrect by learning YET ANOTHER new thing today d ;

Interesting trivia here. Saint Nicholas is obviously the Patron Saint of the Children. But he is also the Patron Saint of what unlikely professionals? Saint Nicholas is also the Patron Saint of Prostitutes. This has its origins from a tale describing how the historical Saint Nicholas gave a woman a large sum of money so her daughters could avoid having to sell themselves for income.

OK maybe someone here could help figure something out. I don't know the name of this tree, or what the candy that was on it was called either. And I cannot find it anywhere I've looked. So I was like 5 or 6 when I first saw this tree. It was a miniature fake tree that I wanna say was made of foam? Anyway...I don't know where it came from, or who we got it from either. All I can recall clearly, is the candy on the tree. This candy was a sort of soft gummy consistency. Like imagine Dots, but softer and chewier. And coated in sugar too. That's what those candies were like. They also came on little white lollipop sticks that were stuck into the tree. I remember loving the hell out of them and cannot for the life of me find where they are or what they are. Not even the christmas tree they came on. Please can anyone tell me what they are.
